Hi Kist. That I remember, the reasons given were that you cannot partake of God's table and Satans table. Since all other religions are Satan inspired to a JW, then any other service would be partaking of Satans table.
Since fleeing the dubs, I just down't feel like going to any service, regardless of religion. I have come to believe that all religion is man made and that we can serve God individually, without a clergy or a governing body.
I just an't believe that God can make allowances for so many things, as explained by JWs not being able to follow each iundicidual scripture, yet to be such a tight ass about specifics such as, What building you enter, where you say a prayer, etc.
What I find most ironic, is the JWs will honor a wedding performed by a member of the clergy, but will go out of their way to discourage you from attending your own daughters wedding. But, I have never accused them of being shy with their hypocrisy.

i went to the meeting today to hear the public talk given by the visiting co. the talk dealt with jehovah's secret dwelling place and how we can all be taking advantage of "fleeing to safety" as it were, especially as the days are getting wicked as he mentioned.
he brought out the dangers of listening to apostates (there were 2 people in the congregation who disassociated themselves recently, which automatically meant that they were apostates according to the co's comments).
then he further elaborated on the fact that there were about 14,000 witnesses disfellowshipped in the usa each year and in canada 1400, about the size of a circuit assembly - also he said how terribly dishonorable it would be to be df'd and be as a dead person as it were (i felt so embarrassed as i am df'd) - during the talk he brought out two points which were extremely misleading if not outright lies: he said that just after the disaster of sept 11th, thousands of people "wanted to flee to security to the watchtower building and that they felt that they needed this security".

You are so correct as to this being nonsense. I call it pure Bovine Scatology (BS to those who don't know). People were running anywhere they could to get away and I don't blame them. I applaud the dubs for opening their doors and helping those who fled and at least offering water for their eyes and throats. But, to make a ludicrous statement as the CO did, shows how they will twist anything to make themselves look good. Whatever happened to HUMILITY?
How many others opened their doors and helped we will never know. But, we don't see them trying to make out that people were fleeing specifically to them.

I have to agree with LB. Sadly, it seems many times, thier "friendship" has a high cost. Be prepared to just continue with no contact as that is what may happen.
Other than that, I would tell the friend that you value their friendship too much to let religious beliefs come between you. Mention that you really desire to stay friends, but wish to avoid the religious aspect. Then, you will see whether or not you even have a friend.

my mother would never buy girl scout cookies and i was always taught to feel that joining the girl or boy scouts would be wrong but never knew why.. my daughter wants to join and i want to know what i can expect to hear from my jw family.
I can't speak for the Girl Scouts, but when growing up, I was a Boy Scout.
My guess is that the dubs don't care much for the military aspect and Christian aspect that they teach. Their motto, Do A Good Deed Daily, doesn't entail knocking on doors pushing quasi religious literature on an unspuspecting homeowner.

But, absolutely no acknowledgement that shunning may have played a role or even defending the practice. Just saying that it was He, Bryant, who isolated himself.

WOW, Venice, it was the lead story! Your Dad sounded calm and well versed. They also had an interview with what I assume to be an active elder and he seemed a bit nervous, not too sure he should be saying anything. Of course, he tried to say that it was Bryant isolating the fmaily from the JWs and not the other way around.
I can't see what it would matter, but the news did say the family was receiving some harrassment from other family members. I believe they were referring to the Grandparents trying to seek court ordered visitation.
It is very sad that this whole mess happened and I cannot solely blame the JWs. But, I do feel their archaic practice of enforcing their version of shunning does to harm to may that they don't wish to admit!
