Armageddon, or my mother-in-law's visit?
These are one and the same, I would say.
having been one of jehovah's witnesses for the better part of fourteen years and then having left the organization after having discovered the watchtower society's involve- ment with the united nations has left me second guessing myself.
often times, i ask myself why?-why?
did i not listen to my "gut feelings" when i held certain doubts about the organization?
Tell me three things you love about being a JW...
Now tell me three things you hate....
Since the JW mind is not able to find anything wrong with the Watchtower envorioment at all, there is nothing they can say. Their mind freezes. Of course there are all kinds of things they don't like, but they can never verbalize them and thinking them is only in the deepest part of their mind.
Great point drew !
This is a point that Steven Hassan brought up in his book "Combatting Cult Mind Control". It's interesting to note that Steven Hassan never once mentions JWs in his book. Most of what he wrote applied to the Unification Church; of which he was a member. However, it is chilling to see all of the similarities between cult mind control methods, and the methods used by the WTS.
One of the most enlightening books I have ever read.

I would love to hear from some of you whether or not this is quite common or just something I personally experienced.
Suppressing doubt is much more common than you might think. You asked a very poignant question:
"How could I have ignored my gut feelings all of this time?" The answer is really quite simple. It is because you are a human being.
If you are like most of us, you had no choice but to ignore it. It is constantly drilled into us that we have the "truth" and that Satan uses doubt to "draw us away from Jehovah's theocratic organization". Why do you think the WTS constantly hammers into the minds of JWs to never indulge in doubts, never allow oneself to engage in "independent thinking"? Why do you think they constantly discourage the rank and file to only do Biblical research using the Society's publications? They know that even a casual investigation into areas such as archeology, geology, religious history, and ancient mythology will shoot several holes into their ideology.
This is probably why so few JWs have library cards. The public library; next to the internet, is probably the biggest enemy to the WTS system of psychological control over it's minions.
You certainly are not unique in the way you tried very hard to suppress all of your intuition, gut level feelings, and doubts. I tried to do this for some 15 years; until I just could not do it anymore.
There is a book I think is an absolute MUST READ. It is called: Combatting Cult Mind Control. It is written by Steven Hassan. When you read this book, your eyes will open, and you will understand yourself and the JW psychology so much better!
Welcome to the site, and most of all, welcome to reality.

Cambells chicken noodle soup never fails.
how widespread is it among jehovah's witnesses and how do they cope with it?
They stuff themselves with Prozac and food, while blaming worldly people for all of their sorrows.

i have heard that certain types of rice can only survive about 3 weeks under water, it occured to me that perhaps noah would have taken aboard, what do you think?.
what does wt think????
Noah would have also had to take onto the ark: several different types of microscopic dirt mites, several types of microbes, amoebas, parasites, seeds from hundreds of thousands of plants, flowers, and trees from all over the world, as well as several deadly viruses; as these also would have died from being under water.
Such silliness.
how many jws have a real relationship with jehovah ?
i thought i did but looking back it was a relationship with the organization that i had.. i did pray, it always went something like "oh please jehovah make me more appreciative, and stop me being so negative, bored at the meetings and help me to enjoy the fs " .
i always felt the "third voice " you hear while reading the wt, was jehovah, i know it sounds nuts but i think this is why even though i had doubts, i always pushed them to the back of my mind.
All I had was a relationship with a man - made religion run by a few old men in Brooklyn. Not much of a loss at all.
Yeah, so very true.
My, oh, my, what would we have done without those pictures in the Watchtower showing us how to dress and comb our hair? What would we have done without those demonstrations at the assemblies showing us how to ask our boss for time off of work to attend the very assembly that we were sitting at.
I'm surprised that they didn't print an article in the KM explaining the theocratic method for going to the bathroom. I could just see it now:
"Yes brothers, and when you are done urinating, shake it softly, but don't shake it too hard, as this may arouse unclean thoughts in our minds. We would not want to do anything that would jeopordize our priviledged relationship with our Grand Creator now would we? Let us therefore, put on the new personality and do all things for God's glory; including how we shake it after urinating. By showing such obedience, we are showing that we are making our advancement manifest, and that we are presenting ourselves as a clean vessel in Jehovah's spirit-directed organization".

Hey Danny, I just thought of something.
It's kind of funny how this newspaper went to a director of a think tank for an evaluation on the JWs. I wonder why they just didn't quote from a clip of one of J.R. Brown's happy-pap press releases. They would have basically gotten the same kind of quote.

Wow, vitty, you totally summed it up.
My relationship with God was merely nominal. Like it or not, I now realize that I really worshipped the Watchtower Society. Why do I say this? Because I subjugated myself to the organization as a tangible representation of Jehovah God. There is a word for this. It's called idolatry. I was doing the very same thing that JWs love to criticize the Catholics for doing: showing divine reverence toward an earthly church and it's authority structure. JWs blast Catholics for showing such reverence for the Vatican and the Pope. But, they show just as much reverence toward the Watchtower Society and the Governing Body who euphemistically calls itself the "Faithful Slave".

One scholar who tracks religious groups says he has not heard much about shunning in recent years. He considers the Witnesses "very benign." "The idea of calling them a cult has fallen by the wayside," says the Rev. J. Gordon Melton, director of the Institute for the Study of American Religion. "We've gotten to know them, and we don't feel threatened by them."These naive apologists crack me up. It's funny how this Reverend Melton who is not a Witness can say all of these warm, fuzzy, feel good cliches about a group that he has never been a member of. But, then again, maybe he was just excited about being interviewed by the press. I guess all of the ex-members who have had their lives turned upside down are just some sort of anomaly not to be paid attention to.
