Selection of the JWs in 1918/1919 - how might a JW attempt to show from the Bible
by insearchoftruth ini had asked my wife, who is in the study phase with a jw sister about the selection of the jws by jc in 1918/1919 time frame and she had actually never heard of that.. the husband of this woman she is studying with has been chomping at the bit to talk to me...well my wife said she will ask him to come show me, using only the bible, how this selection was made...of course she did not clear this request with the dubman before telling me she would do this.. i am guessing he will be there when i get home from work tomorrow, she is also torturing our son with a bs now (her son from a previous marriage).. what sort of reach do you think he will try to make to show this...i am guessing he will try to show 1914 from the daniel/revelation stuff, if he does this i am going to ask him to show 607bce from a non jw source....since i believe it is 586/587 bce as a starting date......i hope to keep him on the 1918/1919 topic, and have some examples of their beliefs from that era to talk about as well.

The most current publication of the time of thier being "chosen" was the Finished Mystery. On the front cover of that book is the symbol of the Sun God, Ra.
Is there a good scan of this cover available......along with the page with the copyright.....good point!
I mentioned finished mystery to him because I was raised Lutheran and wanted to read what was said about Martin Luther.....

Unloaded on the husband of my wife's study sister last night, how much damage did I do to myself??
by insearchoftruth inwell had a really good weekend away from home, but i guess i knew that the respite from the wts would end.
tuesdays are the day my wife has her personal bible study with the sister and she has also had the husband come over on tuesday afternoons so the son can have the pleasure of a bible study (which he loathes, he is a high school junior and has no interest in this stuff).
i get home from work late, after a fairly long day and the guy is still there.

hi search those question to me would have been a dead givaway of your researching apostate sites and taking propmps from them and it will be good for him to get to know that people do this now and see the tactics for what they are.
If the gentleman has any sort of critical thinking skills, he should have come to that conclusion instantly, since where do most folks start a research project now.......google, and when one types jehovahs witness, they will get to this site, amongst many many more.
I mentioned to him that one needs to be cautious at what one accepts, for there are many bitter/angry XJWs out there, so I told him I would take my information mainly from current and past publications of the wts.....but I also told him that to do a proper examination of anything, one can not only look at information provided by the organization or item being examined........
This gentleman is a very kind, very intelligent individual, but I could tell from our conversation his critical thinking skills have been very numbed over the years......

I appreciate many of your comments here.....yes, most if not all religions have had issues with the past.....but the issue here is in 1914 Jesus began ruling (invisibly) and in the period up til 1919 he inspected all the religions of the world and found the religion led by a Mr. Judge Rutherford to be the one and only.......
We need to give Jesus/Michael more credit than that.....if the JWs of today were to hold true to the things Jesus saw at the time of the inspection, would they still be JWs.........yes, in the eyes of the JWs Jesus is merely a man, but since he is ruling from on high and should have the assistance of the spirit (Jehovah's force), shouldn't that spirit be much more efficient........and then since Jesus began his invisible rulership, shouldn't the 'brightening light' continue to gain focus, not flip flop on issues such as generation (same now as it was in 1927), Sodom and Gommorah, transplants, etc.

your wife seems a relatively passive party in all of this. Is she on board with your excellent questions? And if she is, why on earth is she studying with these ignoramuses? Is she likely to think things through herself? Could she end up turning on you?
On board, sort of kind of, most of these questions and comments have been previously directed at her, and she told me that since she is just a study, I will need to talk to some one with more knowledge and experience than she........so I had the opportunity and I did.
Would not be at all surprised to see the gal she is studying with attempt to occupy more of her time, I am sure that I have now definitely been marked as a problem UBM....but also would not be all that surprised if he brought an elder by to as awildflower said 'to set me straight'. And if a superJW shows up, I will stick with 1918/1919 and blood fractions.....and when they talk 'light getting brighter', continue with the comments on the doctrinal flipflops on transplants and even the definition of a generation........
I feel confident on what I spoke to him about because I think none of the questions were I think all that out of bounds, I pretty much stuck to medicine and disfellowshipping and I am positive that the comments I have made can all be backed up using the literature that I can ask them to provide me......or better yet, I will ask them to do the work themselves and look up the information.....why should I do all the work?

Maybe you could burn him a CD of collected older pubs from JWN!
Not a bad idea, it would keep us on even ground as to reference materials........
he has to be wondering how you came to know all this stuff..
I told him initially I am an engineer by education and in my job I do research and I check not only references, but references from references.....and my wife knows I over research everything......

Sounds like this fellow is fairly "young" in the organization if he didn't know about organ transplants (MOC circa 80s) and 1918-1919!
Actually he is a born in.....he talks a good game about reading the bible and how one needs to be in accordance with the bible principles, but I think his wife is the super JW, he is just along for the ride and most likely enjoying being the man........
Yep, he sure portrayed Catholicism in a very negative light, but from what I understand, they like to do that....I was really amazed how he looked so perplexed at me when I made some comments, and then when I told him the information I have is from WT literature, it sort of took him back....

- India projected to overtake China as most populous country
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The world's population is forecast to hit 7 billion in 2011, the vast majority of its growth coming in developing and, in many cases, the poorest nations, a report released Wednesday said.
A staggering 97 percent of global growth over the next 40 years will happen in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, according to the Population Reference Bureau's 2009 World Population Data Sheet.
"The great bulk of today's 1.2 billion youth -- nearly 90 percent -- are in developing countries," said Carl Haub, a co-author of the report. Eight in 10 of those youth live in Africa and Asia.
"During the next few decades, these young people will most likely continue the current trend of moving from rural areas to cities in search of education and training opportunities, gainful employment, and adequate health care," Haub continued, calling it one of the major social questions of the next few decades.
In the developed world, the United States and Canada will account for most of the growth -- half from immigration and half from a natural increase in the population -- births minus deaths, according to the report.
High fertility rates and a young population base in the developing world will fuel most of the growth, especially in Africa, where women often give birth to six or seven children over a lifetime, the report says. The number is about two in the United States and 1.5 in Canada.
A stark contrast can be drawn between Uganda and Canada, which currently have about 34 million and 31 million residents, respectively. By 2050, Canada's population is projected to be 42 million, while Uganda's is expected to soar to 96 million, more than tripling.
"Even with declining fertility rates in many countries, world population is still growing at a rapid rate," said Bill Butz, president of the bureau. "The increase from 6 billion to 7 billion is likely to take 12 years, as did the increase from 5 billion to 6 billion. Both events are unprecedented in world history."
By 2050, India is projected to be the world's most populous nation at 1.7 billion, overtaking current leader China, which is forecast to hit 1.4 billion. The United States is expected to reach 439 million for No. 3 on the list.

A couple of more things I forgot to mention, he kept trying to mention how the JWs learn and refine....I asked him if the Bible changes, of course he said it does not. So I discussed how I understand that people may refine thier thoughts and interpretations, but what I really did not understand is some of the flip flops......well he of course asked what I meant so since we were talking about blood and medicine, I asked about organ transplants and he said from what he knows, they are allowed, as long as without blood (which I know is not possible). So I asked him if he realized an organ transplant was at one time considered cannabalism, and he was surprised by this and made some comment how he could not answer for things from the early 1900s, at that time I told him at that time they were most likely acceptable, it was around the late 1960s and most of the 1970s they were prohibited.
I also asked a hypothetical question along these lines, firstly what would be the outcome if a JW took an organ transplant when they were prohibited, and then the understanding of the bible changes to allow an organ transplant, would the person be brought back into the fold, he proceeded to state that a person would not be disfellowshipped for an organ transplant or even today for a blood transfusion if they showed sincere remorse which can only be judged by Jehovah. I also asked the complimentary issue, what if a JW died due to not taking an organ transplant and then the doctrine changed to allow, how does that show the love of Jehovah, well he said there is no guaranty that the organ transplant would have saved the person's life to begin with, which is true, but the chances of survival would have gone from essentially zero to something much greater than zero!!
While we were on the topic of blood, I asked him why JWs are not required to eat kosher meat, since there is no guarantee that non-kosher meat is blood free....no answer....and then I mentioned that even the Jews who are required to follow kosher practices are allowed blood transfusions....no answer again.
While we were on new light stuff, I also asked him why they had to revert to a previously used definition of generation.....once again, no comment.
He tried to talk about changes and how wonderful it is the WTS is willing to learn and change, but then I asked him why if the Bible does not change, why did the JWs change their teachings at one time from one that was compliant with what the Bible teaches, only to eventually revert back to what they changed from.
He really seemed to have it out for the Catholics (as many JWs do) so at that time he went on with how bad it is that some churches worship Mary and have a pope who they believe is descended from Peter.....after a moment of silence I told him I have been reading some of my wife's watchtowers and from what I see the governing body is taking a position of glory very similar to what he said the pope has taken......he just looked at me puzzled...again...
He defended against a lot of what I had said by talking about new light and such, but I think he was amazed to hear some of the things about the WTS that I mentioned.....I am sure he will be either much better prepared, or most likely not alone next time he comes to visit...which I would not mind being never.......
I feel I should have let up a bit earlier, but it was just too easy.....they provide so much ammunition in thier own writings.
