In a thread on biblically proving 1918/1919 it was suggested to use the 'approximate' interpretation of the 70 years prophesy from Isiah as something to point out to the JW when discussing the 'exactly 70 years' used when they attempt to prove 1914.......not sure if a good way to go, but if easily available wanted the support.....
Do you think this would be a good 'display' for a JW Mary?

True to the prophecy, for the duration of "one king"—the Babylonian Empire—the island-city of Tyre will not be an important financial power. Jehovah, through Jeremiah, includes Tyre among the nations that will be singled out to drink the wine of His rage. He says: "These nations will have to serve the king of Babylon seventy years." (Jeremiah 25:8-17, 22, 27) True, the island-city of Tyre is not subject to Babylon for a full 70 years, since the Babylonian Empire falls in 539 B.C.E. Evidently, the 70 years represents the period of Babylonia’s greatest domination—when the Babylonian royal dynasty boasts of having lifted its throne even above "the stars of God." (Isaiah 14:13) Different nations come under that domination at different times. But at the end of 70 years, that domination will crumble. What will then happen to Tyre?
So in this case the WTS has no problem accepting that the 70 years is not literal, mainly because the Watchtower has nothing important resting on this prophecy. But when another prophecy involved in their own "divine selection" is involved you are the spawn of the devil if you suggest that anything but a literal 70 years is necessary.

Selection of the JWs in 1918/1919 - how might a JW attempt to show from the Bible
by insearchoftruth ini had asked my wife, who is in the study phase with a jw sister about the selection of the jws by jc in 1918/1919 time frame and she had actually never heard of that.. the husband of this woman she is studying with has been chomping at the bit to talk to me...well my wife said she will ask him to come show me, using only the bible, how this selection was made...of course she did not clear this request with the dubman before telling me she would do this.. i am guessing he will be there when i get home from work tomorrow, she is also torturing our son with a bs now (her son from a previous marriage).. what sort of reach do you think he will try to make to show this...i am guessing he will try to show 1914 from the daniel/revelation stuff, if he does this i am going to ask him to show 607bce from a non jw source....since i believe it is 586/587 bce as a starting date......i hope to keep him on the 1918/1919 topic, and have some examples of their beliefs from that era to talk about as well.

We are not an island all of God's people including the appostles needed correction
But show me an instance where the apostles made a correction, then had to revert back to the original interpretation......I expect more from God's present spokespeople......yes, understanding is progressive, but going backwards is not a progression....

The Bible never changes......even 'progressive light' can not explain flip flops such as:
- Sodom and Gommorah
- Organ Transplants
- Authoritie
- Generation definition (now back to same definition as 1927)
If the WTS were the truth and Jehovah's mouthpiece, why would the 'spirit directed organization' go from things that are truth and in accordance with the non-changing word of God, to practices against the non-changing word of God and then show the 'spirit directed organization' made a mistake by going back to a previous position.......

by insearchoftruth inwell had a really good weekend away from home, but i guess i knew that the respite from the wts would end.
tuesdays are the day my wife has her personal bible study with the sister and she has also had the husband come over on tuesday afternoons so the son can have the pleasure of a bible study (which he loathes, he is a high school junior and has no interest in this stuff).
i get home from work late, after a fairly long day and the guy is still there.

'spiritual endangerment' or 'absolute endangerment' of your wifes spiritual welfare is another way they might put it to your wife.
I am pretty sure I have been labeled this by a previous study conductor as well..........

They have already succeeded in getting her to label a lot of her former friends as 'unwholesome association'.......
Since they now know that you are well informed about the religion, they will almost certainly try telling your wife that Satan doesn't want her to 'learn the truth' and that quite often when people start studying with Jehovah's Witnesses, they receive "family opposition".
Yep, and this is quite a concern of mine.......not sure how to really handle this. I do not speak bad about the JWs to her, I do not try to keep her from meetings and the like and I just ask her questions.
This is the 'damage' I was referring to in my title.

My question is: what did your wife think of all the questions you asked him and the fact that he essentially, had nothing to support his doctrines?
I am really not sure Mary, she was not present for the complete discussion, she drifted outside with the dog for a while and she has not commented to me at all about it, but I do believe that she is at least thinking a bit, which is a change.....and also, thanks so very much Mary, your project provided me a lot of the background information I needed to be able to have this discussion, in a fairly calm manner.......
When he comes back, I still want him to show me the biblical allowance of fractions, explain to me how the 'sole channel of God' could have flip flopped on organ transplants and explain to me 1918/1919......
