one of the key things i have noticed since leaving the witnesses and interacting with other faiths, is that they often mention the word "miracle!

" in that they will claim that their god had performed some sort of miracle in their life that brought about something amazing.

it is not always christians who say this either, as many of my "pagan" friends and myself have had spirit driven moments that were something that could not be displaced as "chance.

I find this area a difficult one and I'm very skeptical. Thousands of people claim to have been abducted by aliens - are the claims believable or not?

If it the the case that an angel has appeared to a woman telling her that her child is drowning in a pond , why don't they do this in all cases?

Witnesses often fall into this trap , assuming Jehovah "micro-manages" our lives. A witness I know is trying to move into a particular area and has three times been outbidded on houses - they now feel that Jehovahs isn't "blessing" their move , so they are staying put. I asked them - how far does Jehovah manipulate the housing market? Is he deliberately motivating other individuals to put in inflated offers for properties? Had the witness "tested Jehovah out" by putting an offer for a house that was far in excess of the asking price to see if they were outbidded (answer = no). If he interferes in fairly trivial areas like this , why does he not interfere in far more important areas?

Incidentally , witnesses are not Dfd for making wild claims of angelic involvement. Most are regarded as the "Cuckold" witnesses discussed in a previous thread.

I've read through some of the information on this case & it is a very sad one. My heart goes out to the Mother & Father.

Our view of the case is obviously flavoured by whether or not we support non-blood medical management , for religious or other reasons. I note the child was given 38 blood transfusions but still died. It is a fact that "life saving" transfusions are not the panacea that some claim they are.

I'm trying to reconcile the discrepancy in the statement on the Jwinfo website that states "with standard medical treatments, Bethany's chance of recovery would be between 30 - 50%" with the medical information stated on several websites that the average prognosis that 20 - 30% of people survive free of disease at 5 years from diagnosis that is accepted by medical authorities.

i was puzzled by the numerous references to this as we don't have this product in the uk , but realise (after googling) that it refers to the jonestown massacre.

the implication presumably being that jws are so dumb , they will do anything that those in authority ask them to do.

(shame this doesn't apply when i am looking for volunteers to stand in for the tms.

According to the Kool-Aid FAQ, "It is a popular misconception that 900 followers of cult leader Jim Jones committed suicide by drinking Grape Kool-Aid laced with cyanide at their commune in Jonestown Guyana in the late 1970's. The followers of Jones actually drank cyanide laced Flavor-aid, a cheap imitation of Kool-Aid."

Entertained at Christening party by JW

on sunday, one my closest friend's daughter was christened.

after the church service, we went to a small party for about 40 family and friends.

at the venue i noticed an elderly gent wearing a tux, and realised i recognised him from somewhere, but couldn't place him immediately.

I know of the guy - getting on a bit but very good. He has loads of tales about Tommy Cooper & appeared on stage with Morecambe & Wise in the 60's at the London Palladium. Think he is a MS ("silver servant" type). He is well known amongst witnesses in England. Good to hear he is still working.

He does appear at witness gatherings - he was at a witness wedding reception that I attended a couple of years ago in Halifax but tends to tone down the magic side (other than "producing" coins from kids ears) - tells a few anecdotes , makes balloon animals - that kind of thing.

The question is usually framed in a broad sense (usually with a smile):

ie Is there anything that would feel would disqualify you from being married here? or even "I assume everything is OK as far as your relationship goes." . That is - if it ever gets asked at all - unless there has been any obvious issues during the courtship then often the elder doesn't bother.

Traditionally the elder would ask during the pre-wedding practice session in the KH , so it usually gets crowded out over issues like flowers and where Aunt Agatha & Great-Uncle Albert will sit.

I know a few JWs who would take this on. The problem is that they would probably be unwilling to debate with ex-witnesses. I've emailed to establish:

(1) Who are the independent auditors who establish that the date has been "proved"? On what basis would proof be established - "degree of probabilities" , "beyond all reasonable doubt"? What authority and scholistic qualifications do the independent auditers have?

(2) Provide a certified copy of the "insurance prize money bond" detailing name of insurance company and terms of policy and payment of premium. Post on the website. I'm very skeptical of the existence of (2) - I know most risks are insurable , but how would you insure against a theoretical risk like this? Sounds like a bit of a wind-up - please donate via Paypal if you are convinced!

"There is absolutely no evidence of "the only consensus one of being critical to JWs, whatever the facts"; it is something you made up. Once again I must ask you to check your facts. Go back and read this thread. You will see most posters are critiquing the reporter's information, not accepting it."

The 18th poster was the first to query the amount , just before my post - most took it at face value (despite it being out by a factor of 1000).

This forum is overwhelmingly anti -JW & makes no pretence to be objective or factual - I accept that. Some posts are legitimate , most are inconsequential , some are deliberate (or in this case , apparently accidental) untruth. I am simply pointing out any obvious errors which would mislead the innocent or naive. I do not claim that all ex-JWs are liars - I have stated that some are obviously scholarly & reason their points skilfully.

There seems to be some disagreement among ex-witnesses as to the financial status of JWs.

Some feel the organisation is very short of funding & quote "cutbacks" at Bethel , paperback bibles , Awake being printed once a month & so forth.

Others feel the society has vast sums of wealth at its disposal (choose any figure between $200 million to $705 billion)

Any chance of getting some unity or consensus on this one? Or is the only consensus one of being critical to JWs , whatever the facts?

As for Rand Cam , this has been definitively discussed on previous threads and even those who are very much opposed to JWs have admitted that there is no case to answer here - the shares are held in a blind trust & Rand is a conglomerate company.
