  Sources of John's vivid imagery

  in common with other apocalyptic writings, such as daniel and 1 enoch, john’s letter employs vivid, memorable imagery.

  as with the other elements of his apocalypse (revelation), john draws on existing sources for his material.. meanings inferred from the images need to keep the following firmly in mind:.

  1. the symbols had to have meaning for and be clearly understood by his immediate intended hearers.. 2. john intended that these images encourage those hearers to “overcome”, then and there.. 3. john anticipated that the coming of jesus was imminent, “soon”.. it is my belief that the images were intended to depict earthly opposition (rome and apostate jews) as well as heavenly opposition (wars in heaven involving satan).. the writers/compilers of daniel also employed vivid imagery.

  something just dawned on me today as i processed my assimilation into the real world (thanks to our new poster, @jester, giving me a major throwback to my first post).. when you're a jehovah's witness, you really are in some sort of la la land.

  things which are perfectly normal are acts of eating from the table of the demons.

  things which are horribly grotesque and extremely unjust are branded as "righteousness".

  I'll casually talk about how I worked really hard as a single mother balancing out meetings, etc, etc, "and eventually, the elders gave me back my rights."

  According the February 2016 broadcast, single sisters wouldn’t remain that way very long if we would just take a humbler view and learn to appreciate our female garbage rights.

  Handling other peoples' reeking leaking bathroom waste is just one of the many rights obedient wives enjoy, along with sammich' making rights and beer fetching rights.

  Work Christmas functions: Being a Bible Student (unbaptized)

  hi all,i have been studying with the witnesses for more than 6 months and regularly attend both midweek & weekend meetings, and i am nearly at the end of the "bible teach" book.

  my boss is adamant i attend team christmas functions.

  she knows about my studying and potential baptism next year, and has suggested that i attend and just not participate in activities like kris kringle.

  I have discussed my situation with some colleagues privately, nobody really cares to be honest.
  

  They probably know you’ve been recruited into a dangerous cult that breaks up families, harms vulnerable children, harbors criminals and denies life-saving medical care.
