  A Little Greek is a Dangerous Thing

  (apologies to any little greeks!

  you know what i mean - a guy who's had no formal training in biblical greek who keeps digging up "treasures from the original".

  i gave a couple of examples in the greek synonyms thread.. i once had an argument (by mail) with a christadelphian who was arguing that the use of the middle voice in a verse in hebrews meant that jesus had to die for his own salvation, not that of anyone else!

  Reporting Time

  i read on another post that something new was started at the last elder's meeting about "turning in time" or "getting time in".anybody know what it is?

  Counting field-service time has a disingenuos effect on the Bible's message. Now the motivation for preaching becomes pleasing men with the amount of time you report. A spirit of competition is also encouraged.

  These days book study conductors are being pressured to get the publishers to turn in their time as never before, now its become much more of an issue. In turn the publishers are prssured by the book study conductor. If ones fail to turn their time in, the book study conductor is called to the carpet.

  As a result of this process many pad their hours and placements to give a good appearance so as not to be hassled.

  Expression "Present Truth" not found in NWT-I checked concordance. The scripture you referenced at 2 Pet 1:12 reads: "For this reason I shall be disposed always to remind you of these things, although you know them and are firmly set in the truth that is present in you."??

  7:30-too early to get up on a saturday morning but the co is visiting and i must show up to make our cong.

  9:00 - arrive at kh, smile and say "good morning" to everyone (even though i'm still half asleep).

  A sister once told me that counting our time is a necessarry evil, that way the preaching work can proceed in an organized manner, brothers in charge can keep track of weak publishers, weak congregations, etc. I am against the whole precept of counting time because it encourages an entirely wrong motivation for talking to others about the Bible. I know for a fact that many pad their hours, placements, etc. because so much pressure is placed on the friends to show a good report. With the new arrangements that were put into place at the last elders school this is especially true. In short, the statistics given are not true statistics, this process of counting time has skewered the preaching activity.

  I am puzzled by the expression, "Present Truth" as used buy the WBTS. For example: "We must keep in step with present truth." Now to me something is either true, partially true, or untrue. If were unsure about something we should say, "I'm not sure" not, "This is present tuth." Some time ago I brought this up to a Circuit Overseer, he just nodded his head at me and said, You just don't get it."

  Please explain-what did I fail to understand?

  I am very much against the degree that Disfellowshipping is taken to. A number of ones have confided things in me and very carefully I have handled these matters on my own so that the person would be spared the emotional rape of a Judicial Committee, and spared the humiliation of being a second class citizen from then on. I don't feel at all guilty about having done this.

  The point has been made that, "Its not a Democracy its a Theocracy." One thing is also true: Communistic force doesn't work.

  Dear Tex; I think things began to change in the mid-80's. That's when the clamp-down on "Independent Thinking" really began gathering speed. Remember the illustration of "The Carpenter's Tools" the point being that we should appreciate a different variety of individuals in the truth. We don't hear thoughts like that expressed much anymore. There was a time when we were urged to know and use the Bible so as to prove and explain things, to think of illustrations for our talks. Now we are told to look in the society's publications for illustrations and for any explanation of scripture as the first measure. Creative thinking is out, institutionalized thinking by rote is in.

  Dear Metatron:

  I have been "lurking" for several years now and especially enjoy your posts. Generally I agree with you. There are serious problems within the organization. Instead of becoming more understanding and kind the organization is becoming more arbitrary, close-minded, and harsh. This has resulted in a situation where we now have a congregation within each congregation. As an elder I see many of the new breed of "Cosa Nosa Wise Guys." As to whether or not you are removed as an elder for various lies, slanders, corrupt practices, etc....this depends upon who you know and how well connected you are.
