another fine example of the watch tower dishonestly quoting and taking out of context what people believe and say.. this fine example was emailed to me by a good friend an ex district overseer in the usa.

let me offer a good example of the use of selective quotations.

for many, many years the society has quoted famed british astronomer sir fred hoyle out of context.

The same thing has been done with Carl Sagan, they made him out to be someone who believed in a direct creation when it just wasn't so.

the main reason given in the 1973 watchtower was that smoking is tied in with spiritism because the greek word which is rendered as spiritism is pharmakia' which literally means "druggery," (see galatians 5:20.

) therefore the argument was made that by smoking we put ourselves under spiritistic or demonic control.

for the last 20 years i haven't heard this reason used.. today the reasons given are that smoking shows no respect for your body as well as for life and that smoking doesn't show love of neighbor.

Dear Mary I certainly hope I didn't offend you in any way. One question: What if a person with a smoking habit only smokes in private or in a secluded area like a field where he can't harm anyone. In this case the love of neigbor argument wouldn't apply correct?

Today the reasons given are that smoking shows no respect for your body as well as for life and that smoking doesn't show love of neighbor. The question is this: Being 50 or 60 lbs. overweight is just as or more harmful to your body than smoking. Also, a person can smoke in private and not encroach upon someone elses clean air. So why is smoking a disfellowshipping offense and being severely overweight is not?

should you be easygoing?

most people would probably feel that it is a compliment to be thought of as an easygoing person, one with a relaxed, placid, tolerant nature.

however, there is another side to easygoingness.

The Pharisees were anything but Easygoing, they scrupulously observed all sorts of man made regulations and were sure to hold whoever they didn't like to the lettter of the law. When the Society prints a whole article against being Easygoing they're really saying, "Forget about being open minded, forget about being tolerant, forget about being long-suffering, and forget about being slow to accuse.

Instead they're opening the door for more pickiness.

Fear of the New World

i always had a fear as an active jw, that i would not like life in the new world that i would not like to be perfect.

to never make a mistake, that would mean you would never get to kiss and make up.

i would never get to watch a real football game, and porn would be completely out of the question.

I came to a decision some years back; that if the present WBTS organizational structure is a preview of what life will be like in the New Order, with its cloistered existence, no toleration of variety or spontaneous thought, then I'd rather just live a short satisfying life and die. Living an endless existence like that would be only an existence-not life at all.

I believe that earth will be a paradise and that the resurrection of the dead will be a reality, but these things will take place in a far different environment than the WBTS would have us envision.

since the lite gets brighter and brighter and jehovah always reveals his confidential matters to his servants, what new light will we next learn?

I look for them to really crack down. When in trouble they revert to rhetoric about Discipline! Obedience! In so doing they try to clothe themselves in a shroud of spirituality. The Society will make harsher and harsher rules, but in so doing they will appear to be more and more of a comedy.

I agree with the posts made by Onacruse, Farkel, and Musky and especially agree with what JT had to say about Disassociation.

It would be great if whatever we did in life affected only us, but too many people that I happen to care about are involved. My feeling is that I can do 10 times as much good if I continue in my present capacity and save many alot of unecessary grief, and your right its extremely difficult. Much strength has been drawn from ones including yourself who post on this board. Please reference Old Hippie's comment on Silent Lambs most recent post, this sums up most of my feelings. To tell you the truth-never have I been so determined to stand my ground. Every Nazi Movement needs to be countered by The French Resistance!
