FAITH DEFINED. Heb 11:1 REALLY bad in NWT. Also Richard Dawkins' definition
by Open mind ini'm still slogging through "the god delusion" by richard dawkins, thanks in no small measure to spending too much time on jwd.
anyway, at lunch today i read dawkins, simple, elegant, somewhat embarrasing definition of faith:.
belief without evidence.

The bible definition of faith really isn't all that different from Dawkins.
You believe things without seeing them is not far off from saying you believe things without evidence.

Excuse me but American's are the ones that are promoting these stereotypes around the world, where the people up here in Canada get our information about the American military? Michael Moore, popular music, all of which would promote the idea that it is the American poor who are doing the majority of the fighting.
Now I feel I can comment on this subject from a unique point of view, for one I lived in the US for over 7 years and have a degree from an American university, and I’ve served in the military (Canadian) for a brief period. When I joined the Navy I started as an officer because I had a degree, and everyone I worked with and was friends with was educated. However, if you were to look at the regular forces it would indeed be made up by a majority of people with no more than a high school education.
These people do often come from poor backgrounds and they are the ones on the front lines getting killed and not the educated officers. The same is true in the US military, the same is probably true in every military. You protect the assets which are harder to replace, that may not be fair, but if you are out to win it’s the best strategy.
However, one thing I know to be true is that many of these poor disadvantaged ones who joined the military were able to get a free education, great experience and learn discipline and go on to have successful careers afterwards. So I see nothing wrong with poor uneducated people joining the military, in all honesty it may be the best thing they could do with their lives as long as they don’t get killed.
The real question to be asking is not what the demographics of the army is like, but are the wars they are fighting and dying for just? Are these people dying to make the world a better place? If not then it is an immoral abuse of power by the government to use the military to enforce its own will.IMHO, military should be about self defense, and not used to intimidate other nations and control resources. This is the biggest difference between the Canadian and American armies and why Canadians are loved around the world and Americans are hated.

Questioning the question of God's existence
by DT ini don't know if there is a god.
if i knew for certain, this piece of knowledge could serve as a foundation for my world view.
some people are confident they know the answer (both theists and atheists) and their world view is based on this faith.

I guess I would consider myself a ‘weak atheist’ or an agnostic of sorts. I don’t believe in any god, if you have read any of my previous posts that would be obvious, but I don’t claim to know the status of the unknowable. (I am however, anti-religious, but that’s another matter).
I use to call myself an atheist without any problems, but I avoid doing that anymore because the true meaning of the word has been lost.
Theist - Belief in a god or gods
‘A‘-Theist - Lack of belief in a god or gods
All of us are atheists at birth, it requires someone to tell you that there is a god in order for you to understand the concept. This is not an argument against god, after all many things require knowledge before we are able to comprehend their existence. We might think that the radio was magical if we didn’t learn in school that there are invisible radio waves transmitting songs throughout the air.
There is a big difference between things like radio waves and god though, mainly that there is proof that things like radio waves, air and gravity exist. It would be stupid to say ‘I don’t believe in radio waves’, because it is obvious they exist. However, it is completely rational to say you don’t believe in something that cannot be proven to exist.
For example, there is a theory in physics that says there may still be free quarks floating around the galaxy as remnants of the big bang, there is no evidence of this and many physicists don’t believe this to be true. I would not take any faith on my part to say ‘I don’t believe there are any free quarks floating around’ because there is no evidence for them. If evidence were to show up, I would be excited and say ‘Wow, that’s great, I thought there was no way they could exist’ and that would be it. I could not say ‘I don’t believe in free quarks’ anymore because there would be clear proof of their existence.
So until I see some kind of proof for any kind of god I will continue to say ‘I don’t believe in god(s)’ without any faith in the above statement. It is simply a matter of opinion, I see no reason to believe in god, so I don’t.
However, the religious will always try to claim that belief / non-belief are equivalent, a statement which does not take much intelligence to refute.

BTW, this was written by a still practicing Christian priest.
There are 2.1 billion Christians on the planet – roughly one third of the entire human population. At the heart of their religion is the New Testament and the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. To Christianity, the written word is the glue that binds the faith of its followers.
So, what if it could be proven that Jesus never existed? What if there was evidence that every word of the New Testament – the cornerstone of Christianity – is based on myth and metaphor?
The Pagan Christ examines these very questions. During his research, Harpur discovered that the New Testament is wholly based on Egyptian mythology, that Jesus Christ never lived, and that – indeed – the text was always meant to be read allegorically. It was the founders of the Church who duped the world into taking a literal approach to the scriptures. And, according to Harpur, this was their fatal error – and the very reason Christianity is struggling today.

Holy insanity Batman!
by SickofLies inapparently people from all over the us are coming and camping along highway i-35 (here), because of a scripture found in isaiah chapter 35, verse 8 -- you will see a passage that in part says, "a highway shall be there, and a road, and it shall be called the highway of holiness.".
i laughed when i saw the things people are praying for.
they prayed that adult businesses along the corridor would "see the light" and perhaps close down.
