Movie-goers can be fickle (great movies that should've enjoyed huge box-office success)
by LoveUniHateExams injust thought i'd start a thread about this topic.. john carpenter's the thing (1982) was a great film, one of his best imo.
for me, it's right up there with alien (1979) as one of the greatest sci-fi horror films ever made.
and yet one film made anything between $100 - 200 million at the box office whereas the other made only $19 million.

Humans brought to Earth, not native to it.
by Bad_Wolf inbelow i link the article.
i thought some points on the claim were interesting.
such as how prolonged direct exposure to sunlight hurts us vs other animals, sicknesses, etc.

Time for the obligatory, stupid, demeaning joke:
"Humans are not of this Earth! They came from somewhere else!"
"Where did they come from?"
"They must have come from Uranus!"
Boo....hiss....boo

I'm a sucker for a horror/ill fated love story. THE DEAD ZONE fits the bill for me. My favorite lines from the movie are:
" 'Blessed me'? Do you know what God did for me? He threw an 18 wheeled truck at me and bounced me into nowhere for 5 years! When I woke up, my girl was gone, my job was gone,my legs are just about useless........Blessed me? God's been a real sport to me!" - Johnny Smith

Remark at memorial about growing annointed numbers
by Gorbatchov indon’t know if it was part of the script.. at the memorial the remark about growing annointed numbers including this numbers from 2015 to 2017 was made (from 13.000 to 18.000+).. reason for the growing numbers could be:.
- feeling annointed because of former believe.
- psychical reasons.

Interestingly enough, at the Memorial that I attended, the speaker never actually mentioned the number of partakers. Instead, he spoke of how the 'little flock' is now indeed little in number. That there are 'approximately 1 in 1,100 partakers worldwide in relation to the Great Crowd of Other Sheep.' A statement riddled with obfuscation and denial.

A book by JW
by Catcat ini bought a book that was published by one brother in our area.
the title, if only, the brother didnt change his name he is, alex bogdanov, to support this brother i bought his book.
it is fiction about couples and i didnt think nothing of it, but after reading a few chapters one of the characters is an ex jw, i don’t think this character is disfellowshipped in the book, but she is definitely not active.

Weren't there 2 Robert Langs? One a nice guy and one a jerk? If I remember correctly, I believe the nice one was a friend of Ray Franz. He was shipped to Watchtower Farms around 1976 to be the Home Overseer. I wondered myself whatever happened to him.

Make the Truth Your Own
by neat blue dog inthis is something that hit me just relatively recently.. the phrase "make the truth your own" is a very famous catch phrase in jw culture.
it was a pet philosophy of daniel sydlik and has been used and is used in talks, literature and song.
every witness knows this trope.

I have known Witnesses that believed the phrase; "Millions now living will never die.", was an actual scripture in the Bible. I kid you not!

Does the Watchtower have an official position on Alcoholics Anonymous?
by JeffT ini ask because i'm working in a 28 day residential addiction treatment center and one of my co-workers is studying with the jw's.
he does not know i'm an xjw.
i suspect that at some point they're going to tell him he can't go to aa meetings anymore.

"There are many treatment centers, hospitals, and recovery programs that can provide help. Jehovah's Witnesses do not endorse any particular treatment. Care must be exercised so that one does not become involved in activities that would compromise Scriptural principles. In the final analysis, however, each will have to decide for himself what type of treatment is needed."- Footnote paragraph 10 Breaking The Chains of Alcohol Abuse AWAKE! October 8, 2005
(If I may steal a phrase from another poster: 'Not supporting, just reporting'.)

If you're expecting a mass exodus anytime soon, FORGET ABOUT IT!
by nowwhat? ini have to make a token appearance at the k.h.
once a month or so and this week went to a different hall.
and believe me they are all still totally oblivious to all the negative news about the pedophiles and shunning that have come under scrutiny by the media and other governments.

"Let the facts speak for themselves."-Sparky1 a month ago
"Sparky, facts never speak for themselves."-slimboyfat a month ago
"The collapse deniers can continue for a while with their denials. But time and facts (bold mine) are not on their side."-slimboyfat 5 hours ago
"The relevant facts (bold mine) are that religions decline and collapse all the time...and all the evidence indicates that JWs are set to follow." slimboyfat an hour ago
It appears to me that slimboyfat thinks that facts cannot speak for themselves, unless of course they are interpreted by him in order to support his personal schema in regards to the demise of Jehovah's Witnesses. Perhaps his 'blind spots' help support his own confirmation bias?
