I wholeheartedly agree, Slimboy. Christendom uses Hellfire to keep their congregants 'in line' and Jehovah's Witnesses use the fear of Armageddon to keep their congregants 'in line'. Fear and not love seems to be the religious leaders primary 'spiritual (psychological) tool' for ruling their flocks.

Hellfire justifies torture = Armageddon justifies shunning?
by slimboyfat ina few weeks ago the watchtower study condemned the teaching of hellfire, among other things, because some religions have used the hellfire doctrine as a justification for torture:.
the false teaching of hellfire has been used to justify torture, including the burning at the stake of those who opposed church teachings.
according to a book on the spanish inquisition, some of those responsible for this cruelty may have believed that they were only giving heretics “a taste of what perpetual hellfire would be like” so that they would repent before dying and be saved from hellfire.. it occurs to me that jws justify disfellowshipping on a similar basis.

Deborah and I are big movie fans and we try to go at least once a month. Things have been dry on the movie scene for us lately. The last 2 movies we saw were ARCTIC and APOLLO 11. For us, both were excellent to watch. ARCTIC was gut wrenching and APOLLO 11 a feel good trip down the road of nostalgia.

Neil Young debuted this song in 1973 on his Time Fades Away tour. Southern California has been supposedly going to fall off the North American the continent ever since I can remember. (No disrespect intended to anyone killed or harmed in any earthquake.)

Holiday field service
by All or nothing intoday is 4th of july in my part of the world- the us- and i was reflecting how we were strongly encouraged when we were still in to go out in the ministry on holidays.
i just mentioned this memory to my husband and we reflected on how cult like this was.
anyone else have thoughts on this?

Back in the '60's and '70's I remember consistently going in 'field service' on the 4th of July, Thanksgiving day , Christmas day and New Years day. And Tuesday night before the Book Study during peoples supper time. One guy on Thanksgiving told me to 'leave his family the hell alone...don't you realize that today is a holiday?!'

Miscellaneous highlights from 10/2019 WT
by neat blue dog inokay sorry, just a few more things that grabbed me in this issue:.
the magazine starts with an article dedicated to the 100th anniversary of that all important year on which the gb's authority hangs, 1919. the article ends with several rapid fire assertions:.
by the end of 1919, jehovah’s peoplewere reorganized and energized.

"By the end of 1919...Jehovah's people had been released from their symbolic captivity to "Babylon the Great" ".
Except of course, after this date they still celebrated Christmas, still believed in the symbol of the Cross, and still celebrated birthdays. More rewriting and white washing of the true history of the Jehovah's Witness religion.

1914 Prophecy
by Acer21 ini am having trouble locating what is the 1914 prophecy?
jw.org states that the jw's accurately predicted the events of 1914, but do not indicate what the predictions were, or the specific fulfillments.
what do jw's think they are (predictions/fulfillments)?

Welcome Acer21. Stick around. Lot's of intelligent people with a long Jehovah's Witness history post here. There is a lot to learn. In regards to 1914, you may search the archives here on this site. In the upper right hand corner is a search function. Just type in 1914 and you are off to the races...

I enjoyed your speech, Terry. It seems in this day and age that many people are confusing patriotism with Nationalism. A very slippery slope indeed. Nationalism is a corrosive, collectivistic, polarizing ideology that can destroy a nation. Patriotism builds up the individual and his country but not at the expense of creating and enforcing 'tribalism'.
