What were the calculations used to arrive at the 1874 date of Christ's return?
by Zoos inwe all know the calculations used by the wt to arrive at 1914. fall of babylon in 607 (false year), gentile times, no zero year, ta-da, 1914.. what did they use before that?
i know it wasn't russell who came up with it - he just adopted it.
i'm just curious what they had to explain away when they made the transition.. .

GETTING THINGS STRAIGHT. Who invented the "FDS" as a prophetic identification of the GB? WHEN?
by Terry in15 july 1906 issue of the watch tower russell stated maria russell was the first who in 1894 "called attention to matt.
24:44-45, applying it to me at a meeting at allegheny and in another meeting with the new york church.
i demurred that i had not thought of the passage thus, and declined to make any personal application of it, although i could not deny the force of the argument....i urged great moderation in the making of any personal application" (p. r3811).

Just to bolster Terrys argument and to add credence to what he is saying about the ORGANIZATION:
"This work, which has covered a period of about forty-five years, has never had for its purpose the forming of any arrangement by which Christians join anything."-THE HARP OF GOD 1921 edition page 240 paragraph 422

Here is a different quote for you with the same information, ScenicViewer:
"Without a doubt Pastor Russell filled the office for which the Lord provided and about which he spoke and was therefore that wise and faithful servant, ministering to the household of faith meat in due season."- THE HARP OF GOD 1921 edition page 239 paragraph 420

Being an ex-Bethelite myself, I have to agree that you probably can't say anything to him right now. He is still in his 'honeymoon' stage and it will take some time for him to wake up. My advice would be to take him aside and tell him that if he ever needed anyone to talk to you will give him a listening ear without judgement at any time under any circumstances. That way, if he wakes up while at Bethel, he will have a loving family member that will accept him without reservation.

Why JW marriage is a huge problem for the organization.
by kneehighmiah inthe difficulty of finding a marriage mate is well known for sisters.
but i would say it's hard for brothers also.
i was talking to a jw last night.

There is nothing SHALLOW about looking for an attractive mate. What I find shallow is kneehighmiahs using his own SUBJECTIVE standard of beauty and attractiveness in order to judge the female Witnesses that he has come across in his lifetime and crying and complaining that none of them meet his standard of beauty. It smacks of blaming the victim! There are nearly 8 million Witnesses worldwide. Surely some sister somewhere on the planet could meet his expectation of physical beauty. I only hope that if he meets her she finds him just as attractive. Otherwise he will be $hit out of luck.
kneehighmiah is asking himself the WRONG question. He should not be asking 'why are there no attractive, available women in the Jehovahs Witness religion?'. He should be asking himself, WHY IS IT THAT I CANNOT FIND SOMEONE THAT I FIND PHYSICALLY ATTRACTIVE AMONG WOMEN IN THE JEHOVAH'S WITNESS RELIGION?.

ALL OTHER TEACHINGS HAVE ONLY SECONDARY AND SUPPORTIVE ROLE, HENCE CHANGE IN THEM WOULD NOT MATTER.
If you really believe that , then Jehovahs Witnesses had only ONE really good idea. Gods Kingdom as the only hope for mankind.
The rest is lies, conjecture, bullshit, personal opinion, fantasy, foolishness, speculation, tom-foolery, and out and out stupidity. And if that is the case then all those secondary teachings DETRACT from rather than give support to the idea of Gods Kingom.

"It sounds like you believe it is shallow to prefer attractiveness over ugliness"-piztjw
Nothing could be further from the truth. However, I would like to point out that the 'globalized, all encompassing' statement that "all the in shape, good looking sisters are Disfellowshipped" is a statistical impossibility. Out of nearly 8 million Jehovahs Witnesses worldwide there should be approximately the equal percentage of physically attractive and physically unattractive persons both male and female as in the general population overall. It would be a more honest question of kneehighmiah to ask of himself: WHY IS IT THAT I CANNOT FIND SOMEONE THAT I FIND PHYSICALLY ATTRACTIVE AMONG WOMEN IN THE JEHOVAHS WITNESS RELIGION? Hence my analogy of the mirror.
As a sidenote, I was one of those attractive and sought after 'brothers'. I was very good looking, a Bethelite and a Ministerial Servant. In my home Circuit I was considered quite a catch. But you know what. I was a shallow jerk......a complete a$$hole. No one was good enough for me! When I finally found the PERFECT and most beautiful girl for me, she didn't want me. I wasn't good enough for her!!!!!!

kneehighmiah,You might want to look in one of these first before you go looking for a marriage mate.
