so- 2 weeks ago i got this private mail from a poster who had never posted on the jwd board before .
which seemed strange to me in , and of itself - what would cause this person to pm me ?
anyway a poster named oak sent me this message : under the title : " did you know ?
Possibilities:
1) Heard this rumour, too cautious to come out of "woodwork", contact one of the prolific posters tp publicise
2) Troublemaker: planting (unfounded??) rumours that another poster (i.e. Mr Flipper) may publicly divulge. Then use this as proof that JWD is a pack of misbegotten apostates that are out to ruin the good (!!!) name of .......(insert name here) by starting yet another round of rumour and innuendo. (Conspiracy Theory)

You might be amused to know a Canadian work colleague spent a week in the Territory last week in a camper - and said that it was too hot. In May. I said go back in December!

i place a question mark on the thread title as i have never read a definition of this genre of rock music that seemed to fit the bill.
what is generally agreed is that it is a european musical phenomena that began in the late 60's and peaked in popularity in the early 70's though it has always had an audience and one which seems to be growing in popularity again.. my own definition is one that suggests: 'music in which the musicians can move from jazz to rock to pop to classical and back again with equal ease'.
i am sure that simplifies things.
Better late than never....
1) The Nice - one of the predecessors of Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Some of ELP's live shows have material sourced from Emerson's old group
2) Emerson, Lake and Palmer - unsurpassed and as overblown as Emerson & Lake's egos. Bigger than life music and definitive prog rock. My all time top group......
3) Triumvirat - German group that had a real ELP sound about them
4) Yes - renowned for the long (and I do mean long) tracks. IMHO Wakeman did better here than by himself
5) Genesis - both before and after Peter Gabriel. Complex works - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is one of the better prog rock examples
One area close to this style of music came from one Larry Fast recording as "Synergy". This was totally electronic (from the mid-70's) and was ground breaking in terms of synthesiser playing (he backed Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush et al as well as producung his own work). Utterly spectacular work, considering the analog synthesisers & technology used.

I understand that there has been a lot going on: there was still evidence of Tracey when I was working ther (parts of Central Darwin were still vacant). Casuarina was still very new and there was really nothing beyond the airport.
And the big risk going out to Jabiru were the buffalo........

i love you all, but i gotta go take care of some things now and it is gonna take some time.
i have had a lot of fun the last few days sharing and visiting, venting and such with you all, but for a while, i need to drop out and take care of business.

i sat next to two very accomplished men while i was on a plane the other night that would have just flicked me across the seat with a snubbed up nose any other day of the week, but this time was different.
when i say accomplished i mean by the run of the mill standard by which we americans tend to measure success.
they are comedians and the one is topping the others jokes as fast as they can go.
My comments are made against my own deliberations as I am considering a job jump from the safety of the public circus into private industry (and at age 53 it will probably be my last opportunity to move).
You might have guessed that 2001 is a favorite of mine - Stanley Kubrick intended the film to be watched - not listened to, which is partly why he laid the music over everything. If your son wants to know what the hell Clarke & Kubrick were on about, the book is a good read.
2001 is not a good topic to get me started on as I can bore the pants off nearly anyone.
