Tina--
Actually,I think the Gb should DO time....(but that's just me :>)
ROTFLMAO! Good one.Joelbear--
I didn't realize you were at Bethel; somehow, in reading (and enjoying) your posts, I missed that. Anyway, the other day I checked out your website -- it's way cool! I e-mailed the address to my mom (also a gay ex-JW, though one doesn't need to be gay to enjoy your site) and she loved it too.

Hey Moxy,
well, there actually has been a lot of research on this of late. some interesting stuff. there was a quote from someone scientific saying that 'he believed that our generation could be the first to live forever' - i doubt that most scientists are quite _that_ optimistic but im sure there that the possibility is not considered an absolutely wild idea.
I'd really like to know where you heard about this guy who thinks "our generation could be the first to live forever." Sounds like something from the Watchtower -- vague, out of context, no source given, etc. I'm just wondering is all.
Of course, scientist usually work to improve and prolong life, and sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. I'm talking about scientists, not mad scientists.
I agree with you that it is rather reductive when people in the Org try to incorporate science into their discourse. Every discovery and marvel can only be talked about in one way: "Isn't Jehovah wonderful ...!" There are Witnesses I know who can't watch a sunset without spouting some "theocratic" nonsense. How deep.

Prisca,
I can rub my stomach while patting my head! Does that make me special? Or a scientist?
Well, even if you are a scientist who can rub her stomach while patting her head, can you make people live forever and ever? Oh, I didn't think so!

What Do Jehovah's Witnesses Believe?
by ozziepost inand a special word today for lurkers especially jw lurkers.. are you sure what you believe?

Here's an excerpt from the rejected T-17 version of "What do Jehovah's Witnesses Believe?"
On the basis of Bible prophecies now being fulfilled, Jehovah's Witnesses believe that it will come in our generation. What prophecies are those, you may ask? Well, it's not of your goddamn business, PUNK! The indisputable facts speak for themselves. What facts are those, you say? HEY -- who are you to question us, anyway? Don't you know who we are? We're Jehovah's Freakin' Witnesses! That's right! I hope you will doubt us, 'cause I'm gonna enjoying watching our Heavenly Father kick the everlasting shit out of you come judgment day! Literally! Oh, it's gonna hurt! And I'll be watching with a large tub of extra-butter popcorn as he eviscerates your ass! Your entrails will be exposed like dung! Your blood's gonna be crushed outta you! Your kids are gonna fall into gaping chasms that open up in the ground! You're gonna die die die die DIE DIE DIEDIEDIEDIEDIEDIEDIE!!!!!!!
For some reason, they cut everything after "generation." I think they're saving it for the forthcoming "Zephaniah and You" Tract. Coming soon to a district convention near you.

A "special" talk? Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
So why do they always dog science, anyway? "Science hopes to end death but is unable." I'd like to meet a single scientist who believes she/he can end death! Scientists try to understand life. Period. But the Organization holds them in such contempt (except for the crackpots, deviants, and fringe amateurs they quote in the Creation book)!
I remember a convention part in which the speaker sneered from the platform: "Scientists have discovered billions of stars, but do they know how the universe came into existence? NOOOOOOOOOOOO! Scientists have cured diseases, but can they made humans immortal and give them X-ray vision? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Scientists have explained the natural forces that operate on our planet, but can they rub their stomachs while patting their heads? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
So stupid. Sort of like this special talk. Anyone see *Welcome to the Dollhouse*? "Um, 'special' means, like, 'retarded.'"

"It's a conscience matter"
by expatbrit injust had dinner with my wife and a couple of her friends.. one of them was telling me about her sister-in-law, a very nice, kind person who i've met on several occasions.
it seems this sister got a job in an office as a receptionist/secretary.
last christmas (1999) her employer asked her to sign christmas cards for all the clients.

Are you also aware that high-ranking officials of the society later sarcastically said, "we sure pulled a fast one over on those dumb Slavs!"?
I certainly believe it, considering the Society's tacit position on all non-Americans and non-whites. According to them, Jews are greedy misers, blacks are a cursed yet teachable servile race, and the ancestors of Mexicans are a backwards, underdeveloped people. Anybody want quotes? Man, I wish I were only making this up!
So I guess the Society's position here is that bigotry is a conscience matter, too?

A mistake I made reading the Revelation Book for the bookstudy (I was 14):
"And then will come the great breasts of Babylon ..." *beasts*
Mistakes my future father in law made as an elder:
"Jesus died an ignoramus's death ..." *ignominious*
"And then we will see the great thongs of Jehovah's congregation ..." *throngs*

I was told this one:
There was once a Sister Paine who had a large family, and hence always sat in the last row of chairs. During the WT study one Sunday, she raised her hand to comment.
"Sister Paine in the rear," the conductor called.
