Though it still is being denied by many in the media, I don't disbelieve it at all. Sickens me. I look forward to the day when rationality takes the place of "Babylon the Great", and ALL religions go the way of the dinosaur... I know it won't happen, but one can dream...

Reading WT & Awake for X years = College Education
by under_believer inhas anybody ever heard any witnesses utter that old saying "reading the magazines for 10 years [or whatever] is equivalent to getting a college education?
" a couple of things are amusing about this.
one is its utter and complete falsehood--what a crock!

Ha!
I have a very good memory and I'm absolutely sure that this was included as one of those braggadocios, claptrap things they stamped on the back of the Awake to give it journalistic legitimacy, after they got rid of the cutout coupon things for old WT books. -

What did your worldly friends think?
by Fleshybirdfodder inat around 19 years of age i started dating a "worlding" girl and brought her to meetings to get the elders off my back (to no avail of course... i was "marked").
needless to say word got out and some of my other friends decided to check out some of the meetings.
one of my closest friends who had been to many church services (he is a gifted musician and played organ at his church and several others) came to a theocratic ministry school/service meeting.

Yeah, but when you were a kid (if you were in the org as a kid) it was fun to be the one who clapped the last.

"Celebrated WT Scholars"?!?!?! Celebrated by whom? I thought those chosen to be Jehovah's Witlesses were only commanded to celebrate the memorial.... oh wait.. they are just observers. Hands in pockets, chewing gum... yelling at children if they actually attempt to take a sip... Also, why are we wasting our time trying to disprove an artful dodger? Were he an actual Witless he wouldn't be on this site. Is he SO innocent as to not know that encouraging debate with us evyil serpyents might cause a future witless one who might be honestly looking online for the Watchtower.org, or conversely JWmedia, to be stumbled? In this sense is he not working against the holy spirit? Is this sin not unforgivable? Let the poor fella sit and masturbate in front of his computer screen whilst dirty talking the picture of Jezebel in MY BOOK OF BIBLE STORIES as she gets tossed out the window. Too many posts to placate the ego of a lonely, scared, sad person.
But then again, 607 might be the date that makes sense of the entire world and GOD and human consciousness. Kinda sounds like numerology to me. Freaky.

Ha UB!
Off topic, but I remember an elder I used to be employed under in the only virtuous vocation other than pioneering (JANITOR) giving a part at the assembly at precisely that time of day. He gave a rhetorical question... (I don't remember, my wrist and elbow were numb from supporting my head and yes, drool trickled down my arm) something to the effect of naming some undesirable trait of worldlings and asking "is this the way we as JEHOVAH'S PEOPLE want to be!?!" I guess the intonation in his voice rose too much or he spoke too loudly because EVERYONE greeted his question with thunderous applause. After that... silence. He looked out over the audience and shook his head... "no brothers, it certainly is NOT". -

LOL dido,
The best feeling in the world was at the assemblies at precisely 2 in the afternoon. Lunch was heavy in your stomach, hangover was wearing off, and the speaker was droning.... droning... droning...zzzzzzz

At around 19 years of age I started dating a "worlding" girl and brought her to meetings to get the elders off my back (to no avail of course... I was "marked"). Needless to say word got out and some of my other friends decided to check out some of the meetings. One of my closest friends who had been to many church services (he is a gifted musician and played organ at his church and several others) came to a Theocratic Ministry School/Service meeting. I watched his jaw lower further and further as the meeting progressed. He couldn't believe that after someone had the guts to go onstage and give a "sermon", an elder quickly trotted up after and "critiqued" him. He was blown away by the question and answer parts from the Kingdom Ministry; this was at the time when it was up to the brother reviewing the material to come up with the questions for each paragraph (ie.. paragraph reads: So then dear brothers, it is important to keep up to date service records because Jehovah is a God of Order and we want to please Jehovah. Question, "why is it important to keep up to date service records?" Answer from kid wearing bowtie in the front row waving hand frenetically: "Because Jehovah is a God of Order and we want to please him!".... nods of heads and sighs of approval...move on to the next paragraph). After it was over I turned to him and asked him what he thought. His deadpan response:
"this is what you guys call church? It's like I just sat through a business meeting of aliens."I guess that's why the society doesn't recommend bringing new ones to the Theocratic Ministry School/Service meeting right off the bat.
I had some really great, polite, liberal minded friends and pretty much just invited them so I could hang out with them under the pretense that they were "interested." Most of them were not as vocal as my previously-mentioned friend. I can only imagine now what most of them were really thinking as they sat through all the rhetoric. Anyone else have a similar story?

Did you ever write an excuse on the back of your service report?
by JH in.
when i joined the jw's, i remember an elder stating that when you do less than the average number of hours in your month, mark the reason why in the back of the service report sheet that you give at the end of each month.. did anybody else receive these instructions way back in the late 80's?

Never had to. I was very "creative" in counting my hours. Witnessing to my pets, making a burp sound like Jehovah's name at McDonald's... I made sure I got my time.

Double Standards with Liberal Witness Friends
by Fleshybirdfodder ini'm sure this may have been covered, but many ex witnesses i know that have not been formally df'd or dissasociated thenselves still retain some friends among witnesses.
any friends i have for the most part that are still in the org are really congenial people, until it comes down to any discussion that might teeter on the edge of being remotely deep.
i've had one friend i hadn't seen in a while who came to visit me tell me right off the bat that we were not to "discuss religion", because i'm "too smart" and he "he won't be able to argue" with me.

I'm sure this may have been covered, but many ex witnesses I know that have not been formally df'd or dissasociated thenselves still retain some friends among Witnesses. I'm not the type of person who incessantly brings the knives out on friends' beliefs, however, for a relationship to be close and substantial things do need to get deep at times. All my non witness friends have absolutely no problem discussing philosophy, theology, science along with sports or music or beer or whatever, and have no problem disagreeing with me and vice versa. It's how we get to know eachother as people. It feels like I'm walking on eggshells with my Witness friends, but I want to show them we all aren't rabid, scary, frothy mouthed apostates. Eventually it gets tiresome avoiding real discussions. Any advice or comments?
