This thread rocks.
IMHO, you'll find the most technical skill in extreme metal, jazz, & classical, but of course there are a lot of incredible guitarists out there in every genre. I am a HUGE Hendrix fan... he was so ahead of his time.
Anyway, here are some from left field... i don't think any of these guitarists have been mentioned yet. Hope you like!
Leo Kottke - one of the best acoustic guitarists i have ever heard. this man can play!
Wes Montgomery - jazz guitar legend.
Fredrik Thordendal (Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects, Meshuggah) - amazing metal guitarist that incorporates a lot of jazz influence.
John Petrucci (Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment) - he does everything: shred, jazz, flamenco, metal, ballads. a mind-blowing talent.
check out Petrucci's solo a couple of minutes into "The Rena Song" on this album. Breathtakingly beautiful stuff.
Tony MacAlpine - the king of shred. a classicaly trained pianist turned shredder. amazing technical skill & speed!
Santiago Dobles (Aghora) - another great shredder with a lot of classical & latin influence. His band is also amazing.
Vinnie Moore - the greatest neoclassical guitarist i know of. imagine baroque classical music played at 5x the tempo. pachelbel on speed. awesome guitarist!
Luke Jaeger (Sleep Terror) - amazing death metal guitarist that can switch from brutal riffs to soft jazz at the drop of a hat. he actually takes performance-enhancing drugs before live shows to increase his speed. fun stuff!
That's all i can think of off the top of my head. Hope you enjoy! There's been a lot of great names being dropped in this thread, i'll be checking a lot of new music out now. Thanks everyone!

"He that is not against us is for us."
by Confession inreading this scripture was important to my original willingness a couple of years ago to reconsider my religion.... john said to him: teacher, we saw a certain man expelling demons by the use of your name and we tried to prevent him, because he was not accompanying us.
39 but jesus said: do not try to prevent him, for there is no one that will do a powerful work on the basis of my name that will quickly be able to revile me; 40 for he that is not against us is for us.
[mark 9:38 40, nwt].

Very thought-provoking post, Confession. i too had read this scripture before, but never realized the full implication. thank you for bringing this up! it does indeed fly in the face of the official Society doctrine. i learn something new every day on this board. i am continually dumbfounded by just how often the organization twists the meaning of the scriptures to suit their ideas.

Is your computer fan noisy when it gets warm ?
by JH in.
i have a pentium 4 3 ghz and the fan isn't too noisy when it's below 75 degrees f, but when it's 85 in this room ,like now, my computer sounds like a hair dryer.. anybody else has this slight problem?

Howdy JH.
Most modern processors have a temperature-controlled variable speed fan built into the heatsink to cool them. A lot of power supplies have a variable speed fan too, so you should also look into that. Once the temp hits a certain threshold, it kicks into high gear. From the sound of yours, it could be a serious dust bunny infestation inside your case, or a fan bearing could be on its way out & is being aggravated when the fan speeds up. I would open the case & thoroughly clean out the dust, & then try to pinpoint the noise. There should be one big fan on the processor & most likely one smaller one elsewhere on the motherboard. Also be sure to blow out the power supply & check its fan too. It's a good idea to use a screwdriver or something to stop the fans spinning if you blow them, because too much speed can burn up the bearings as well. Hope this helps!!

When at the convention ; Top reasons for going
by free2beme ini was thinking about this the other day, and wondering what others felt about the district convention.
namely, what was the main thing you wanted from it?
a few i remember were these.. 1. number one every single year was that i wanted new information on when armageddon was coming and how close we were to the end.

because i'm a spiritual/psychological masochist... i get off on congnitive dissonance & being told i'm not good enough to be approved by God. beat me, FDS, i am yours! ahhhh!
Seriously though, i'll soon be going to this year's DC. i'm not in a position to get out of it. I'll try to get some notes for everyone to pick apart. ;-) it was always tedious to sit thru the whole program, but i enjoy seeing old (conditional) friends, getting away from home for a few days, & i do actually enjoy some of the program too. i just sift the wheat from the crap. i've been going for so long it's routine now. although, since i've learned the real truth, it is depressing to see so many misguided souls there. this year's DC sounds especially sad, what with all the emphasis on the org. & i seriously miss the cheese danishes. *sniff*

I noticed under_believer's "O R'lyeh?" avatar, (cracked me up, by the way) so i thought i'd see who else on this board digs H.P. Lovecraft. I'm a huge fan of his work & the gnarly pantheon of freakish alien beings that his imagination spawned. I've always loved mythology, so when i discovered Lovecraft & the Cthulhu Mythos i was hooked. Lovecraft had a knack for building tension in a story & a unique way of using the English language. *geeky snort*
Fellow aposta-nerds, what are your favorite Lovecraft stories?
For the uninitiated, Wikipedia has a good introduction to Cthulhu.

For the Christians on this board
by Honesty in.
is jesus real to you?.
the reason i ask is because a few weeks ago i was talking with two young men about him and one of them turned to the other (his cousin) and said, "i know jesus is real.

I've been raised a dub, so i've always felt God & Jesus were real, even when they seemed distant. But after finding out so many things about the org. & really studying the Bible & examining my beliefs, i've found that their presence in my life has become much more profound. I pray so much more these days. My wife has noticed a change in me too. It's so liberating when you finally realize you don't need a man-made organization to dictate (& in their case, mediate) your relationship with God. So yes, i would say Jesus is very real to me. Good thread, Honesty.

I've cracked up about many things in my few months of lurking here, but for some reason the first thing that comes to mind is some of Gumby's signoffs: Gumbastard, Gumclamgriever, Gumnuts, & my personal fave, Gumschlong. (from the infamous "dinger" thread, i believe) His posts in general are usually pretty funny to me.
But then again, it doesn't take very much to amuse me. :-D
