I have collected sayings, homilies, whatever along the way that crystallize something bigger I learned. I will post a few every day. If you have one, please share it.

If you lie down with dogs, you'll get up with fleas.

To belittle is to be little.

Somewhere, I got the idea if I just took care of others, I would be taken care of.

How funny... I have my own little collection too...

Odd how sleep makes one forget... only to remember once again upon awakening. (Anyone who has ever been depressed would understand this one)

Everyone is trying to create their own paradise, when there is room only for one.

(There would have to be a whole world created for each person for them to enjoy paradise. Each person has a mutually exclusive idea of what paradise is.)

It’s hard to get a foot into a closed mouth.(My personal favorite)

I have one that my Mom passed on to me and which my daughter has found to be......um.....pertinent....

"Gettin' married is like a fat woman takin' off a tight girdle...."

One I really like is quoted from "Steel Magnolias"...

"An ounce of pretention is worth a pound of manure."

    And my personal favorite...

"Wisdom is knowing when not to let yer alligator mouth overload yer hummingbird behind."

I don't know how good a father I was, but had learned that when your daughter is between the ages of thirteen and seventeen, you will never win an argument with her, and if you fall back on anger and recrimination and coercion to prevail over her, you will come to loathe your triumph and the weakness it disguises and you will not easily find forgiveness for it in either her or yourself.

--James Lee Burke in his book, Purple Cane Road

The Paradoxical Commandments by Dr. Kent M. Keith:

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
    Love them anyway.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
    Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies.
    Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
    Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
    Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
    Think big anyway.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
    Build anyway.

People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
    Help people anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.

And this is one of Mother Teresa's additions:

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God.
It was never between you and them anyway.
