Well written and hopefully thought provoking for many JWs or those contemplating studying with them.

My Latest to the Editor
by AK - Jeff indear editor:.
the letter below is somewhat longer than most you run in your newspaper, i know.
i hope you will run it however, as painting the picture of cults and their insidious control is not something that can be done in a few words.

why work your ass off in America till you Die? Retire out of this country and send our politician a message
by DaCheech inhttp://finance.yahoo.com/news/how-to-retire-comfortably-for-usnews-2643852806.html?x=0.
take your measly social security check and run.. my city/property taxes in nj alone went up to $8,500 a year (in 20 years it's gonna be $15,000?)..............
how can i retire here?.

My cousins retired to Mexico. Then that area began to have problems, and they feared that the Mexican government was going to take their property, and sold it first. You have no guarantees of property rights when you go to another country.

Demon possessed furniture?? Any scriptural support?
by digderidoo ini remember instances where we told that the demons could get into the house through furniture or ornaments.
if anyone had a problem in the house with demons, they should remove anything that they may have bought second hand.
i remember one family getting rid of their carpet!.

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the org down on these stories in recent years?
Yes, they used to have much more interesting talks years ago-in the 70's they had demon stuff in the Watchtower lessons-I remember one was about a witch doctor swinging chicken feet and telling villagers that the pioneers would die, and when they didn't, people started studying.
Another one, I think in a public talk, was that a woman who came to the meetings was demonized, and began yelling, and jumping around the hall. The elders rolled her up in a rug and took her outside. Most KHalls don't have rugs anymore, so I don't know how that would be handled today.
Then there were always the stories of demonized stuff being set on fire, but not burning.
I somehow missed the one about the smurf getting up and running out of the KHall (that one didn't make it to my hall, I suppose) but it must have made a few folks sit up and listen for awhile.
Yes, the meetings must be so boring now.....

Great Watchtower quote
by 5thGeneration injust stumbled on this looking up medition because of another post.. you just gotta laugh and cry at the same time.. http://www.watchtower.org/e/20020401/article_01.htm.
should faith be based on reason?
"there are too many 'religious' people who become religious precisely to avoid having to think," writes the dean of a theological seminary in the united states.

Yes, 5th, I see the irony.
And your picture accurately represents the appropriate look to accompany their statements!

Greetings!
by Merkaba ini am a twenty-eight year old ex-witness.
at the age of fifteen i had developed an alcohol and drug problem mainly due to my dysfunctional upbringing.
my parents were divorced at a young age causing my mother to run to the witnesses for emotional support and fellowship during a trying time.

Welcome, Merkaba
Join the ranks of many who have survived the organization known for "love amongst themselves." Too many have been the recipients of their brand of "love."
The upside is, you are free. What you must do now is strive to look forward. Be the kind of person that you admire, and live the "better life" that you deserve.(This, of course, is advice that I struggle with myself)
I am with the person that said to love your mother. I speak as one who no longer has one, and the time will come all too soon that you won't either, as we most certainly all WILL grow old and die. She may have been so indocrinated that she did what she thought she must from the JW standpoint. I hope things will improve between the two of you.

My Story - Abbreviated but still way too long
by jamesmahon inas i have enjoyed reading everyone elses biogs here i thought it was about time that i put my own down.
i have thought about why i want to do this and whilst i can pretend it is for the better good and it will act as a warning for others thinking of joining the witnesses, actually i think it is because i think it is just because it makes an interesting story and as will become apparent a good part of my life i had to live a lie and i now find it really liberating just to be really open with everyone.. i also thought about how to write it.
was tempted to write it to the tune of the fresh prince but thought that might get a bit tough after about verse 38. then wondered whether i should do it in the style of one of those biography pieces in the awake but that would involve reading an awake to mimic the style and just couldnt be bothered.

James,
Thanks for clearing up the "popped his clogs" expression. I enjoyed your comment about having a happy fourth to the person in Walmart. Sad thing is, so many people that are younger today probably don't know enough about history and geography to "get it."
Many of us on this forum have gone through terrible times as a result of being a JW. I am glad that you are here with us. I hope recounting your story was somewhat cathartic for you, and that you have gained some measure of peace in your life now since you have your own family. At least you can insure that your children have a very meaningful life filled with love and encouragement. Experience can be a harsh but effective teacher.

Welcome.
Good heavens! You have been through a lot.
I am with the poster that said that we probably won't see your family's life chronicled in the Awake anytime soon.
I do have one question. You said: he popped his clogs when I was two so I never knew him.
What does this mean? A heart attack? There were interesting terms in your story that we here in America don't use.
I also would like to know about your life now. What does your wife think of the JWs? Poor woman, seeing your brothers try to choke you! How is your relationship with your father? Is the teacher still alive?
Please post a part two.

The WTS say they are NOT Creationists........
by cantleave inthen wtf are they?.
why don't they like that term?.
-
Quandry
They hold to their teaching that each "day" of creation meant millions of years.
They have NEVER taught this! They taught each day was 7,000 years long, because of the "thousand year reign of Christ" counting the last of the "rest period."
This is like saying they never pointed to 1975 as any date of importance....

Have your JW Relatives Explained about Generation/Overlap Change to You ?
by flipper inafter reading on the way out's thread about his mom explaining the generation overlap to him it kicked this idea into my head to make this thread .
i thought it would be helpful to see if anybody here has had jw relatives or friends try to explain this " generation overlap " theory to you as a faded or inactive witness and what happened in the conversations.
so please feel free to post your experiences.

onversation with JW.
Me: How did you understand the new generation teaching at the convention?
Her: I understood it the way you did.
Me: and how do you think I understood it.
Her: The way you wrote in your notes.
Me: So what did you get out of that
Her: The same that everyone else got out of it.
Hahahaha! This one takes the cake! This could have gone on forever...and so what did everyone else get out of it?

Watching them FADE in an other way
by Darth plaugeis inmy father was a cop for 30+yrs.

Darth,
Please hold the memories of your loved ones close and dear. Dad needs you now more than ever. I watched my granmother, and then my mother, lose touch with reality. Yes, it is hard.
Serenity, what you said was so sweet:
Also think of it this way, your father in his career helped many people, he saw people at their absolute worst; now it is his turn to be cared for and helped. I can also tell you firsthand that when it comes to taking care of those in the "helping" professions- police, EMS, nurses, doctors, we do try and take extra special care of them.
