after having been raised in the jehovah's witnesses for 44 years ( getting out 6 years ago ) i have now come to peace with my view of what i personally feel about the existence of god , or no god, or whatever is flying around up there in outer space.
i am basically agnostic for sure / perhaps leaning atheist and i've come to that decision based on the years and years of unfulfilled false promises of being in a mind control cult ( jehovah's witnesses ) claiming to represent an alleged " god " or " jehovah " saying there would be a paradise, and armageddon to destroy 99% of the earths population.
also- i enjoy helping others without thought of being rewarded for it.

okay, most of these are going to show my age.
notorious b.i.g.
"life after death".
You know, I've never really listened to enough rap to see if there is something I might like. It sounds like a project for me.
There was a time I didn't care much for country or metal either, but I have loosened up a bit in recent years. The local youth listen to latino rap that is practically screamed. It's the worst stuff I've ever heard.

we got more bad news regarding my brother in law.
for those of you who don't know, he has myelodysplastic syndrome.
that's not the worst of it.
Hey Gumby, go to the top of your post where it says:

Edited to say: Shamus beat me to it. See, it works!
here's one example: being a congregation publisher.
nowhere in the bible does it say you should be a "publisher" and turn in your time if you preach.
they try to twist the scriptures by saying that numbers are constantly being recorded in the bible so then conforming to the rules of being a publisher is from the scriptures.. yeah, right..
Well, Stephen, no one is going to deconvert you. Were you ever even a Jehovah's Witness? If not, then why are you even here?
Of course, you're quite welcome to be here, but with all your scripture quoting, you come across as someone looking for converts to your religion.
My eyes just glaze over when I see a post full of scripture quotes. I had my fill of that for over thirty years of my life, and don't need some never-was-a-jw type person assuming I don't know what the Bible says, especially when I've already done my research that makes all those scriptures invalid.
I mean no offense, of course, it's just that I'm not sleeping well tonight...

i have been watching a documentary tonight on moses, rameses and the plagues of egypt.
one thing that mentioned was how monotheism was taking hold in egypt and how transcripts from egypt had an influence upon bible writers.. the following is a comparison of akhenaten's hymn to the sun with psalms 104. .
hymn to the atenpsalm 104. your dawning is beautiful in the horizon of the sky, .
As for the use of Elohim (literally translated as "gods" but often rendered as "God") in Priestly passages of the Pentateuch, could this be seen as a sign of early polytheism relating to the Egyptian religious tradition? It is one thing for ancient Hebrews reading their own language to make a mental transition between "gods" and "God" based possibly on context, but quite another for translators raised in a monotheistic tradition to decide that for their readers in another language.
Dave (can't sleep, at least I don't have to work today)

I was under the impression that the actual state of Israelite worship for most of the pre-exile period, Josiah's reign being a possible exception, was polytheistic. The earlier writings are certainly rife with mentions of other gods being worshipped and rampant idolatry even by the Patriarchs. Even the story of Moses and the Exodus doesn't deny that other gods existed, only that Yahweh was stronger than the Egyptian deities. During the period of the kings, Yahweh was seen as a territorial god, one among others worshipped by surrounding nations. Strong monotheism was a product of the Babylonian Exile.
Dave (correct me if I'm wrong!)
cultists, although under strong coercion, do have choices.
maybe it's just a matter of getting them to realize they do have the choice.
it can be empowering to stop using language like, "i can't," and replace it with, "i choose not to for today".. william glasser, known for reality therapy, is somewhat harsh and overly simplistic imho but he makes some very good points.. the ten axioms of choice theory .
All Total Behavior is chosen
It sounds good, but I think it assumes that humans are rational creatures. Our perceptions can be altered in ways that we are not consciously aware of. I read about people who commit robberies because they don't have enough money to pay their bills. The rational point of view is that they made a wrong choice, and now their circumstances are even worse than before.
How did they "rationalize" committing their crimes? Did they actually believe they had no other choice? Did the individual's circumstances make the act a perceived path of least resistance? I don't know for certain, but I imagine that human emotions and individual circumstances play a far greater role in behaviors than rational and logical decision making. All of this rambling qualified with a big "imho."

one of the ways a website can be shut down is a technique call ddos (distributed denial of service).
the way this works is very simple: if you have enought people loading a particual website over and over again the web server gets overwhelmed and cannot function... effectivly shutting down the website.. you can help do this to the iranian government websites by loading the following page:.
http://www.pagereboot.com/?url=http://www.irib.ir&refresh=1.
Perhaps, before we try to 'fix' Iran, we should maybe get some real change in our own government?
Simultaneously, there's a certain inescapable irony and disingenuous quality presented by the Western government heads who are harshly critical of the Iran crackdown on dissenting citizens while they, themselves, condone similar ironfisted policies in their own lands. Their two-faced position is barely hidden beneath the surface of their mock concern for the well-being of Iranian protesters as they urge their own and allied troops into battle, show little (if any) sincere remorse over the slaughter of masses of civilians that happen in the process and make sure that demonstrators at home are disregarded, denigrated or preemptively rounded up as happened at the 2008 Republican National Convention. - Who's A Low Level Terrorist? Are You?

I have absolutely no love for the Iranian government. However, I see no reason to help the murderers at the CIA with their attempted regime change tactics. This US Govt. Psy. Ops. thing is starting to piss me off. If Iranians tried to shut down US Government web sites, it would be called "terrorism." Let's do everyone on the planet a favor and mind our own business for a change. Ignore this blatant media campaign by our corporate overlords and their Zionist friends.
