  on first john 5:20 it says that jesus christ is the true god and eternal life.

  i decided to see what it said in the nwt and it was very similar just that it read life everlasting instead of eternal life.

  i realized that they didn't lower case the 'g', unless i overlooked it, when saying jesus was god or even a god.

  It should be a lower case g. According to the WTS the only one who gets an upper case G is Jehovah.

  this magazine was disturbing to me at the time, but i lost track of it and only recently found it .

  this is exactly as it was printed, no photo shop, i am not that clever.. it is credited to a newsagency, jan banning , panos pictures - so i do believe that she was a real child prostitute .

  there is something that gets to me even now about this picture.

  Being abused by a close relative in secret, and having to live that lie (with the church supporting the abuser) is, IMHO, worse in a psychological sense. It makes the child feel guilty, rather than just a victim of circumstance. Further, in the course of the physical torment, there is the special brand of witness mental torment - enslaving the child to a lifetime of cult behavior. All JW kids, not just the sex or physical abuse victims, face this mental abuse.

  Who says child prostititutes don't suffer the same feelings of guilt (Mommy doesn't want you any more because you were bad)? It has proven to be an effective tool in the hands of abusers so it's only logical to assume that it is used to keep the children in line. True most children don't have a church harbouring the abuser (that we know of) (Unless they were Catholic before the scandals) now it's the community that in essence protects the pimps by not taking enough action to get rid of this scum and allowing them to flourish. To whom does the child turn? Where can they go for refuge? who can they trust except the devil they know (it's designed that way)

  The same methods cults use to control people can also be used in one on one relationships and also by the state to control it's citizens. It doesn't have to espouse a "religious belief" or veneer of religion to be cult like. After all even the bible admits that gods are not required to be almighty creators and live in a mystical place. Alcohol can be a god, so can drugs, sex, food etc all with their own "cult like" behaviours.

  As I said there are no degrees of better and worse in this situation. Both are equally horrid and to suggest that being a witness who is being abused (and/or needs a transfusion) is worse that being abused by hundreds of men makes being the prosituite seem less serious.

  This is a VERY sensitive topic with me. I'm sorry I overreacted but your comment touches a very raw nerve.

  What you are in effect saying is that the little girl on the Awake cover is better off as a child prostitute because she'd be far worse off as a witness child who was being abused or needed a transfusion. That is simply not the case. It was a rotten comment to make, it diminished the suffering of that little girl and tried to suggest that there is something wose out there than being a child prostitute.

  It's still a rotten comment to make. She would not be far worse off...how do you know that the little girl is still alive? How do you know what kind of life threatening diseases she may have from the hundreds of fat middle age men who pay for that sort of shit.

  The authorities?????? Don't make me laugh. There is little political will to do something about child prostitution and even whwre there is $$$, manpower and laws are lacking. They say crime doesn't pay but if it didn't there'd be no criminals. There is soooooo much money behind child prostitution, that's why the industry continues to flourish.

  Sorry james_woods...this is your exact quote. I just copied and pasted it. It's back on the first page in case you'd prefer to read it for yourself and see that I'm not quoting you out of context or changing it in any way.

  I agree - this is definately an actionable firing offense for the editor of a pseudo-religious magazine. Although Awake covers were often chosen for salacious thrill value more than good taste. VD - Is it for Christians?

  My gawd - can you imagine how terribly embarrased a somewhat enlightened JW would be who is sent out with this trash to show to people on their front doorsteps?

  I know for a fact that when I was a pioneer - such stuff as this would get deep sixed into the old car trunk and I would be using the extras from the previous issues while waiting for the following issues.

  You know, as bad as the poor third-world girl looks to be off in that picture, she would be far worse off if she were a witness who either had an abusing relative or should need a blood transfusion.

  lets face it a picture can be very powerful. to bring home the same shock of what children suffer in words would be very difficult, and also open to criticism as "lewd" or "libidinous".

  If we start banning images that disgust us then I want the cross banned. How about the x-mas tree? The swastica? Stephen Harper's face? (lol)

  To ban these things would be to destroy the democracy and freedom we all now enjoy. It would in effect make us a more authoritarian society...much like the one we all escaped from.
