chilling similarities to WT in "Leaving the Saints" Anyone read it?
by truthsearcher inhi all: i just finished (in one day) the 2005 book "leaving the saints" by martha beck.
it is a very disturbing inside look at mormonism, wife abuse, sex abuse, mental illness, lies, coverups, and apostacy.

BUT
Postscript
"I helped raise Martha. I cared for her as a child and have tried to support her in every way possible throughout her life. Martha has always lived life as a melodrama, bouncing from one form of self-destructive behavior to another," said Christina Nibley Mincek, an attorney who has studied and written on sexual violence." Her accusation that our family would in any way tolerate a crime as hideous as the sexual abuse of a child is probably just another sad attempt by Martha to claim the limelight and make herself the hero/victim in one of her fanciful stories."
"Martha and I have remained close and I often spend holidays with her," said Rebecca Nibley. "During that time [the period when "Leaving the Saints" takes place], she encouraged me to get my own recovered memories of being abused. As hard as I tried, I couldn’t remember anything untoward concerning my father’s behavior toward me, and I can’t validate any of Martha’s claims. I love Martha dearly and hope she knows I am there for her under any and all circumstances."
"She was my big sister and I idolized her, and still admire her in many ways. We shared a bunk bed during the entire time Martha says she was being abused," said Zina Nibley Petersen, Ph.D. "We shared everything -- clothes, friends, secrets. I don’t believe for a minute that during that whole time, she was being molested by our father. I’m shocked that her editors would release this book without checking even the most basic facts."
Perhaps? Who is telling the truth?

There is an interesting response to this book on the web here:
http://farms.byu.edu/publications/nibleyfamilystatement.php
NIBLEY FAMILY RESPONSE TO MARTHA BECK’S "LEAVING THE SAINTS"
SALT LAKE CITY ( February 22, 2005 ) – In response to the allegations in our sister Martha Beck’s book "Leaving the Saints," we – all seven of Martha’s siblings – release the following statement:
Knowing our sister and the circumstances of our home, we agree that Martha Beck’s portrayal of our family in "Leaving the Saints" is false. We are saddened by the book’s countless errors, falsehoods, contradictions, and gross distortions. She misrepresents our family history, the basic facts of our lives, our family culture, the works of our father Hugh Nibley, and the basic principles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She also omits critical facts including her own previous writings, her and her husband’s search for their sexual identities, and the tortuous process -- including self-hypnosis -- by which she achieved her "recovered memories."
Interesting?

I need a language expert - ref: Mizraim
by Beardo inhi chaps .... any help appreciated.
i am having a ridiculous conversation on another forum with a poster who insists that mizraim is not supposed to indicate the land of egypt within the bible texts.. she claims that freemasons (yep - i know) have shoe-horned egypt into the narrative to draw attention to the pyramids and the world of the occult.. i know that this is whacky stuff and my reasoning with her is not actually helping, as she insists that mizraim is a different land altogether, regardless of my pleadings.. i have searched the internet to aid my quest for knowledge, but i haven't found anything particularly useful to date.. so, can anybody who understands the original language explain to me why the name mizraim was altered to read as egypt?.
thanks .

Mizraim = Musr, Misr, Misri, the Hebrew form being Misraim
http://www.catholic-forum.com/saints/ncd02956.htm
In Semitic languages Egypt was known under the names of Musr, Misr, Misri, the Hebrew form being Misraim, of which the termination is regarded by some as the regular dual ending used to designate at the same time both parts, Upper and Lower, of the country.

While malicious lying is definitely condemned in the Bible, this does not mean that a person is under obligation to divulge truthful information to people who are not entitled to it.
Such a typical JW answer, I AM only talking about information and facts to which I AM entitled!!
Elders in particular are the biggest bunch of liars ever, mainly they get into a position where they are forced by the society to tell one lie which has to be followed by more lies to cover up the first. Perhaps you haven't been able to read this from their latest publication:
"Dealing With Others as God Desires" from "Live With Jehovah’s Day In Mind"
‘How would God evaluate the way I deal with my brothers?’ One area of concern is how we view and treat a brother when things have not gone smoothly.
God desires that we be truthful in our dealings.
We must be honest in formal situations, but we are also urged: "Speak truthfully with one another." That includes in the privacy of our home when speaking with our marriage mate or close relatives. It also applies to our everyday conversations with spiritual brothers and sisters, whether we are speaking face-to-face, talking on the telephone, or communicating in another way. They have every reason to expect that what we are saying is the truth.

lying became something she learned to do well. ...and 'loose with the truth
Jehovah's Witnesses are some of the best and most prolific liars known. They have no morals about lying despite what they are told and read in the Bible and surprisingly the society's literature. It is very difficult to understand.

Looking at the clip, the name of the church is shown, entering this in Google, you will find this:
Foundational Beliefs
GOD
We believe there is one living and true God, who in essence, while eternally existing in three distinct persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, all having the same nature attributes and perfections.
(Matthew 28:18-19; Mark 12:29; John 1:14; Acts 5:3-4; 2 Corinthians 2:13, 10:11; 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:21)
GOD THE FATHER
God the Father is the creator of the universe and is a personal God, who desires a relationship with all people. He is a supernatural being, who has always existed. He is the ruler of all creation, who also hears and answers prayer. He is perfect in holiness, wisdom, power and love.
(Genesis 1:1; Psalm 89:26; Isaiah 9:6; John 6:27, 45-46; I Corinthians 8:6; II Corinthians 1:3; Galatians 4:6; Ephesians 5:20)
GOD THE SON
Jesus Christ is God’s only begotten son. We believe in His conception by the Holy Spirit, His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles and teachings and that He offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on the cross. He rose from the dead on the third day to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to heaven and will return again to earth to reign as King and Lord.
(Ephesians 4:1-8; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-5; I John 5:20; Isaiah 53:3-12)
GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT
The Holy Spirit is present in the world to make people aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth and guidance in doing what is right.
(John 14:16-17, 26, 15:26, 16:7-14; Galatians 5:18, 22-25; Acts 1:8; I Corinthians 6:19-20)
THE BIBLE
The Bible is God’s Word to all people, written by human authors through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the foundational source of truth and authority for all Christian beliefs and living. God inspires it without error.
(John 17:17; II Timothy 3:16-17; Psalm 119:105; Proverbs 30:5)
THE CHURCH
The true church is composed of all people who trust in Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. Believers are united together in the "Body of Christ" of which Jesus Christ is the head. Friends Church is a group of believers in Christ, who have organized themselves for doing the work of God’s ministry. Our church is responsible to provide opportunities for fellowship, growth, teaching and serving by using one’s spiritual gift.
(Romans 12:5; I Corinthians 12:12-28; Ephesians 3:6, 4:11-16, 5:23)
COMMUNION
Our relationship to God as believers provides us with the privilege of moment-by-moment communion with God. It is this silent communion of our spirit with the Spirit of God that is essential to our continued walk with Him.
(John 6:33, 48, 51, 14:16; Romans 8:11; Ephesians 3:14-17a; II Corinthians 13:5; Revelations 3:20)
The "Lord’s Supper" is a time of remembering the death of the Lord Jesus Christ and for examining one’s life. The taking of the elements does not result in spiritual benefit but provides the believer with a physical method of remembrance in a Scripturally approved manner.
(I Corinthians 11:23-28, 10:16-17; Luke 22:17-20)
Friends Church teaches the necessity of spiritual baptism and communion and provides for water baptism and the Lord’s Supper for those whose conscience would lead them to partake.
BAPTISM
At the moment we become Christians we are baptized into the body of Christ, and this spiritual baptism is totally sufficient for the believer.
(Mark 1:8; Ephesians 4:4-6; Romans 6:3-4; Colossians 2:11-12; Luke 3:16; I Peter 3:21)
The physical act of water baptism by immersion after accepting Christ as personal Lord and Savior is not needed for salvation or spiritual standing, but it is a person’s testimony of death to sin and resurrection to a new life in Christ.
(Acts 2:28, 8:12, 16, 36-39, 10:47; Matthew 28:16-20)fokyc
