I was smiling very big when I went to write my original post, and couldn't really think of what to call it... so I put down something which now I see is possibly more controversial than I imagined, but is certainly a reflection of how I feel about my own posting on this website.

To Delilah,
I'm not here to laugh. I may be wrong, but I think I know the pain you're talking about, and if I'm correct, then I've seen it up close and personal.
So, by no means am I here to laugh.
Also, I don't know if the congregation was laid back or not, but I do my own thing. Besides, the good jobs require degrees anymore... I mean like being a manager for McDonalds requires a degree... crazy, huh? Not that my aspiration is to be a manager at a fast food restuarant.
Eh... I suppose I might as well add, thinking of college, that I'm a French major... meaning I don't know what the hell I want to do with my secular life.

Just thought you might want to know.

Eh, I don't do the little excercises, so I wouldn't know.
I suspect it gives the willing a sense of satisfaction and completion.

No no, not at all, please don't let me put you on the defensive.
I'm not trying at all to indoctrinate or preach to any of y'all; if I slip, let me know.
But somehow I thought it might be interesting to post here. In my past, I've held similar views to what is believed here, and it's a new experience doing this. I don't know that it has a proactive purpose.
But again, please don't be indignant with me. I mean no harm.

None whatsoever.
I suppose it's only reasonable to say that a few years back I declared myself atheist, then moved to agnosticism, and then to general apathy (can we stop arguing now?), and I even looked into witchcraft at one point (mostly b/c I was being encouraged to associate with a Wiccan study)... but now I'm back here with the witnesses, and I feel most comfortable here.
At those times, I never initiated contact with apostates, but now I'm not intimidated by it.
Maybe I like the Witnesses cause I'm laid back. See, I don't like this idea of only having 80 years to live. So, the Witnesses suit me very nicely since I'd like to take my time to study everything imaginable, and sure it's a leap of faith, but if they are right, then all's the better. And I just don't have these problems y'all talk about with them. Of course, I think a lot has changed. Not to offend, but why doesn't anyone here quote from recent literature instead of all this stuff that's years old. That's like criticicizing Windows 95, instead of examining Windows XP.

To Spectre
I've browsed through several of the discussion forums, and I found this site via a site designed to help ex JW's, which was quite amusing. I must say, I felt complemented that he acknowledged how trained we are in the art of speaking and debate. Are any of you new enough to have seen the burgundy book we use for the Theocratic Ministry school now? It's drab, but useful material, as are most textbooks.

How many themes are covered in the WT articles?
by Check_Your_Premises ini love data.
especially in charts.
i can visually "see" things that i just can't by relying on memory and current perceptions.. i thought an interesting peice of data to track over time is the "type" of articles published by the wt.

Recently, I've seen alot of Hope for the Dead, and You can be Happy articles in the Watchtower.
Also, be obedient to the elders (although that falls under obeying the society, doesn't it)
and... hmmm... also stories of concentration camp survival.

Wow.
So, you know I'm an active witness, very active. Hah. And I'm not laughing at y'all, but wow, I can't believe how extensive this is.
It's odd, cause I've read some of this info, and I'm going, hey wait, I read all sorts of fiction. Some of my favorite authors are Dostoevsky, Ayn Rand, and Heinlein. Currently, I've got a call who has proposed that evolution was used by God... as a result, I've been reading through Darwin's Origin of the Species, as well as other secular works that do and do not support evolution, and weighing the material as objectively as possible.
Although he'll never convert, I still keep regular contact with an agnostical evolutionist friend of mine. We know we'll never agree on religion, but we still argue it every few weeks, and I love those discussions.
It's not exactly encouraged, some of y'all may be aware, but I'm still attending a four year college for a degree. I've spent time away from home living in college dorms. I've done, yes, that college thing. And still... still, I'm a Witness. Oh sure, I've had some of the bad experiences, but in reflection, it seems my problems were me expecting other Witnesses to perfectly practice what they preach. Which they don't. My mom went through with a controversial divorce... the elders still won't take sides, and I've got huge issues with the way many interpret subjection. However, upon reading all the scriptures in the Bible (out of several translations) on the topic, I've decided that the subjection is referring to the cooperation between husband and wife, and indeed the Society has recently taken a very firm view against domestic violence of all sorts lately.
I'm loving reading this 'Blogging the Bible' on Slate Magazine on msn.com. A Jew is reading through the Pentateuch for the first time, unaided, and his unpolluted summaries of what happens are very interesting.
Ok, so I'm confused by all this rhetoric that Witnesses are backwards and academically dumb. I know many very very educated witnesses, and love hanging out with them. Sure, I've been around a few who cross their arms and glare when I present other ideas about the scriptures and how perhaps these ideas are correct, incorrect, or may be reconciled to what we already know of the scriptures.
I'm in good standing with every congregation I've been in, I'm steadily increasing my hours, and I adore the ministry. After being in close association with other college students, it's a relief to be around folks who aren't focused on smoking drinking and fornicating. In whose company one can enjoy a pleasant evening of humor, good food (cause I always eat good with the Witnesses), and yes that word 'uplifting' speech.
And now here I am posting on what is technically a very apostate website. So. What do you make of it?
