  Were your parents a different religion before JDubism?

  i know an awful lot here are 3rd and 4th generation - but were there any who's parents become dubs as adults?

  i'd be interested to here what it was that made an adult become a jw when not brought up that way?.

  i'll relate my parents experience shortly...but its something i;ve been thinking about a lot.

  My parents were catholics (my father's Italian) and I was baptized a catholic too. When I was 9, my parents' marriage started to crumble and my mother prayed for help. A few minutes later, two J-Dubs knocked on the door and she saw that as a sign. I think you can guess the rest of the story. She thinks the organization saved her marriage. Funny thing: my father never got baptized but he is as overzealous as an elder.
  The whole family are still Jehovah's Witnesses and so, I've not been able to see my 9 year-old sister for years. But I'm drifting off the topic.
  I think maybe people convert to the JW cult because they are going through hard times that weaken them and/or they feel a spiritual void in their lives.

  actually makes sense.

  the god of the ot is very violent, no matter how many ways you cut it.. religions fail to understand that jehovah is not the peaceful god that jesus called "father.

  When I was younger I was in charge of my bro's personal bible study (he must have been about 9 years old) and he asked me: "What if Jehovah and Satan are the same person?" I was like "Don't be silly" but I have to admit this question bugged me.

  first off, i want to make it clear, i am not accusing anyone of any misdeeds.

  there are alot of topics on here like; "show your picture, what do you do for a living?, how did you pick your screen name?

  these are probably innocent posts by nice people.

  Maybe I'm naive but: Are there really JWs browsing this website whose purpose is to expose another's apostasy? I just never thought they would ever allow themselves to read what is discussed here.

  you get a new bible, and as you opened it, you notice that the pages all stuck together in these onion skin thin pages.

  so you start separating them, with that crack snip and then separated sound.

  that was fun, let me do another, i wonder if i could get through all of genesis before this guy finishes his talk.

  Happened to me too. Actually, I wasn't that clever but the audience and the guy on the platform were pretty far from bright people.
  In my congregation there were mostly elderly persons but there were a couple of hotties too. Helped the long hours to pass.

  Finally I know I wasn't the only one who played with his Bible during the talks and had sexual fantasies. I even went to the Kingdom Hall twice after having left the org because of a gorgeous sister.

  last time in field service

  another poster had the topic about your last meeting, but what really stands out for me is my last time in service.

  it was a nice day and i was trying to keep up appearances.

  i offered the rags a one door and the householder took them (i didn't bother with the donation spiel.

  I had spent the d-t-d morning with an elder. At the end of the FS morning, I just told the elder: "Look, this doesn't make sense to me anymore. I've never liked field service anyway." His eyes popped and he gaped, unable to say anything for a few seconds.

  Favorite Band as a teenager........

  as a teenager, what was your favorite band?

  this band can be a local, main stream etc..... my favorite local band was little blue crunchy things, they were from milwaukee, wi.

  Is America one big cult?

  dont get me wrong im not a yanky basher like some we know but when visiting my dad the other day got me thinking when he played a dvd he had.. the dvd was of a concert of religious music by the assembly of god and the sdas most of the program was very good with excellent prerformers and uplifting music.

  i thought the sdas in the states looked like they were being influenced by the more charasmatic a of g people because many were raising there hands like the aof g do.. there was nothing too unusual until about two thirds through when some marines marched in with the yanky flag with a marine either side complete with rifle .

  the remainder of the concert was dedicated to nationalistic hyms of which i cant recall the titles.

  I wouldn't say America is a cult becauce America is not a homogeneous whole (some use the phrase "salad bowl"). However, in my opinion, Nationalism (and I'm not exclusively referring to U.S. nationalism) is definitely a cult made up of many denominations (French nationalism, US nationalism, Italian nationalism, etc.). A selection of historical figures are revered like holy men. The nationalist beliefs are exclusive: "we" are good; "we" were chosen by god, etc. Nationalism has even its own rituals and taboos: for example, there is manual that tells the proper way to deal with the US flags that are too old to be flown (a very ritualized ceremony is prescribed). Moreover, nationalism is often followed with exeggerated zeal: people are willing to kill and die for their nations without requiring much of an explanation. They obey the national leaders like the JWs obey the governing body without a question: They can't be wrong.
