i've just registered on this site.
i'd like to kick off by asking this wealth of experience what your most successful witnessing to witnesses tips are.
so if you're a non-and-has-never-been-a-jw, what stops them in their tracks?
I sometimes fantacize saying that:
"If the only people left in the world are going to be JWs, I just wouldn't want to be there."
"If God is who JWs say he is, then God is an asshole and he doesn't deserve me and probably not you, either."
I also dream of handing them copies of Bergman's article, 'Why Jehovahs Witnesses Have Mental Problems' and/or the latest transcripts from Dateline, BBC, NYT, etc., etc.
with autumn in the air, my thoughts start turning to the holidays ahead.
are any of you doing christmas or thanksgiving?.
i do, but i have to be so careful, incase any jw family would happen to drop by.
It's so sad when we all know that it is very common for JWs to actually 'get their share' by 'just having a little turkey dinner' - but not exactly on that day or 'just buying a little present' - but not exactly on that day, ot not exactly wrapped in THAT paper or THOSE colors etc., etc., etc.
My JW sends me birthday cards and she scratches out the 'happy birthday' line. Like there aren't a thousand other cards she could send? I guess she's killing two birds with one stone by making an obvious point of preaching and condemning my birthday while at the same time 'honoring' me (in her mind) for it.
To be in fear of hypocrites....What's the point?
I'm wondering....is there any reason they have to be invited into your home during the holidays? Can't you just say you're busy?
They may actually appreciate not being put into a situation that forces them to confront their 'beliefs' face to face.
I didn't catch whether or not you have children (sorry, can't go back and peek while I'm typing). If you do, at some point, it's going to be important to take a stand on one side or the other.
But if your kids are really young, there's no point in getting them sucked into debates they're too young to comprehend. (Tho JWs would readily take full advantage of that situation and of their innocence if they're allowed to).

I think, when dealing with JWs it's wise to heed the biblical advice to be 'cunning as wolves'.
i was just curious if any of you growing up in the truth were overly scared of armageddon?.
when my mom came into the org.
in the 70's,the only so called kids book was the paradise lost book.the pictures in that book scared the pants off me!at night when i was lying in bed,if i would hear a loud plane go over head,or there was a thunder storm,i was sure it was the start of armageddon and i would be sooooo scared.i was wondering if i was the only one overly scared,or if their were others.. also,was anyone out there extremely frightened of the demons?i would hear all these crazy experiences of people having problems with demons,and i was sooo frightened they would come bother me.maybe i was just a big old scaredycat,but if any one else has any experiences,please post them!

I can relate. Having God step in and smash everything to pieces was an attractive idea to me.
Anything to end my victimized existence.
In retrospect, I now see that this was an effective way to keep an abused child silent. Holding out this hope that 'someday' God will fix everything - and in a really big way, too!
i am not, and never have been a jw.
my interest in them started 1 year ago when i started to 'study'.
going on to the internet, and searching ' jehovah's witnesses' led me to this board, (among others).

there is no doubt in my mind that the glory days of jehovah's witnesses are over.
from my knowledge and experience with wt history, i would define the glory days as the decades of the 1950's, 1960's and early 1970's.
with knorr's great expansionary vision and discipline, dubs in the 1950's became a "somebody" in the 1950's.

I suspect it might be wise to point out to them that they have put their relationship with the WTS over their relationship with God. And that they have more trust and respect for the WTS than they do for the Bible.
one thing that the witnesses promote is how they are different from the rest of the world.
in your personal experience , did you find that you could trust a witness more than you could a non-jw?

And that is why JW relationships are ALL very superficial.
How can you get close to someone when you CAN'T share your deepest thoughts or feelings?
Because it's their job to report you. And your job to report them.
I suspect there is something to this.
That those who seek out the dubs actually desire extreme superficiality in their relationships with other people.

I suspect that outside of returning a lost wallet or being overchanged at the counter, most JWs are confused about what honesty IS.

let's see.... * they'll either pay for the release or incite the slaughter of the philippine hostages just as the march is scheduled to occur and thereby 'one-up' silentlambs for jw media coverage on that day.. * they'll eventually change their policy somehow (probably placing all of guilt and all of the burden for reporting onto the government).
then they will take credit for the work of bill bowen and barbara anderson and all (afterall, they were jws) and use it to polish their wts apples and further promote their nonsense on an unsuspecting public.. grrr.......
