Maybe you could share your concerns with your friend and ask questions to get a better idea of what to expect.
Even if you decide against going, the alternative you're offering the kids sounds pretty fun too -- the parade/games/professional fireworks display. When I was a kid, people in the neighborhood set off fireworks and also we would go to see the professional displays. I always thought the pro ones were way more fun and exciting. So I don't think you're being a "party pooper" either way, it's not like you're making them stay home and see no fireworks at all.

Fireworks/Kids/Non licensed person...ok? or bad idea?
by FreedomFrog ini've been invited by a group of friends to join them at their house shooting off fireworks.
ok, first red flag is i know they are not licensed and the fireworks are illegal.
though, isn't it "illegal" the same as driving the car a bit over the speed limit?.

George Carlin Has Just Died
by chrisjoel inomg..sad sad sad...just heard on radio ...here in canada.......great comedian and anti religious kinda guy...always brought a smile to my face..... http://justjared.buzznet.com/2008/06/23/george-carlin-dead/.

This is sad news. George Carlin cut through BS with a chainsaw, with a wicked wit and a sharp intellect and a lot of guts. This guy brought "the emperor has no clothes" to the masses, and made it work because he wasn't just smart, he was also freakin hilarious. He'll be missed.

all those books
by runningonfaith inmy wt librery is going in the recycle bin a little at the time.what did you do with the wt books?
-
nameless_one
If you do recycle them, please remove the covers or otherwise "disassemble" them somehow (wouldn't want some unwary worldly stumbling across it and then sharing the experience from the platform years later, dontcha know).
An even better solution, if you're willing to accept a minor degree of hassle, is to donate it for purposes of cult-awareness. Blondie's suggestion is a good one.
Whatever you choose to do with it, congratulations for getting out and wanting to toss it :-) -

Sadly, this is very true.
And that goat picture is extremely disturbing, yikes LOL. -

So this guy was raised a Witness, a JW his whole life, a member of a congregation for 50-something years -- where were those people after his mom died, while he was wandering around alone, desperately seeking Witnesses, for 3 freakin years? No one followed up on him, tried to contact him, made any effort at all? Yeah, Jehovah's loving organization sure takes care of its own! Nice.
UGH. I do not feel encouraged LOL. -

Witness work at 2 a.m.?
by Fatfreek ina non-jw friend in a southern state has close ties to a jw with a late teen-aged son.
this son is pioneering during late hours, meaning 11 pm to 2 am.
i'm told his car group calls on, among others, convenience store workers where they apparently have much idle time on their hands.
-

That's certainly an interesting approach. Are the others in his car group also teenagers? My first thought on reading this was that he's feeding his mom a line about where he is late at night, but I'm sure that's overly cynical.

How is the Internet changing us?
by Narkissos inopen question: i really don't have any ready answer for that one.... my basic assumption is that mankind has always been different.
every period and situation of history can be construed as a "system" involving specific political, economical, social and technical conditions and a corresponding set of ideas, or beliefs, allowing for a certain type of self-, community- and world-understanding.
just to follow one particular line among many: .

according to the thermometer in my car, it was 123 degrees in palm desert today about 5 p.m. of course, palm desert has miles of concrete, makes it a little hotter than other places.
