A few weeks ago, someone made a comment that the disfellowhipping policy had changed considerably throughout the Society's history, with the early organization showing a much gentler attitude toward disfellowshipping. It was stated the the Society has even used the same scriptures to justify different attitudes toward disfellowshipping. Has anyone researched this? Any scans or quotes? I'm especially interested in seeing how the same scripture could be interpreted to justify 2 opposing views of disfellowshipping. If anyone could help me with some info, i would really appreciate it!
Thanks!

Welcome to the board. I hope this site will be a comfort to you, it has certainly helped me. You've already received some fantastic advice, & you sound like you've as good an attitude as anyone could muster in your depressing situation. I sincerely empathize with you... I absolutely hate that anyone has to go through things like this. :-( But I do agree with the idea of biding your time & trying to keep peace around the house until you can move out. It's hellish to have to live a lie, to be so untrue to yourself, just to keep peace, but the alternative would probably be harder to deal with, at least from my perspective. The lesser of two evils, if you will. I can relate to your situation somewhat, as I'm still in the organization, mostly for my family. I'm biding my time until I figure out what I truly believe, & then I'll go from there. One day at a time.
You've got a bright future. You're a smart guy, & I know things will work out well for you if you play your cards right. As you said, similar situations have been conquered before on many occasions. Here, you have the support of a lot of caring, intelligent people. You're in my thoughts and prayers. Hang in there.
With love,

Baptism - To Whom?
by mavie inthanks to drew for originally posting this in one of sagan's threads.
in light of the questions for baptism, specifically question 2:.
(1) on the basis of the sacrifice of jesus christ, have you repented of your sins and dedicated yourself to jehovah to do his will?

I hear ya mavie, i was reading the new book the other night & noticed this point. It kills me that something from the WTS's own literate can be considered "apostate." But don't ya know, a good JW wouldn't be trying to find all these contradictions in our spiritual food, would he? :-P It's madness! As blondie said, they make (& break) the rules.

Metallica!! (insert ASCII headbanger dude here, forum wouldn't let me use it for some reason)
"One" still brings a tear to my eye. What a work of art.
Hard to decide on one favorite band, though... I was a huge Rush fan as well.

Here are my (somewhat shocking) results. I had found this a year or 2 ago, before i started questioning, & got 100% JW. At least that's a little different now. I do still believe in God, but as far as everything else, i'm thinking it all over. I've got a lot of reevaluating to do. Even while i was still mentally in dubdom, i never thought of myself as conservative. Kinda scary! My answers may be very different in 6 months...
1. Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (100%)
2. Orthodox Quaker (97%)
3. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (96%)
4. Seventh Day Adventist (91%)
5. Jehovah's Witness (89%)
6. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (86%)
7. Bahá'í Faith (83%)
8. Eastern Orthodox (81%)
9. Roman Catholic (81%)
10. Orthodox Judaism (72%)
11. Liberal Quakers (68%)
12. Islam (64%)
13. Jainism (61%)
14. Mahayana Buddhism (57%)
15. Unitarian Universalism (56%)
16. Theravada Buddhism (56%)
17. Sikhism (55%)
18. Christian Science (Church of Christ, Scientist) (53%)
19. Hinduism (52%)
20. Neo-Pagan (52%)
21. Reform Judaism (48%)
22. New Age (40%)
23. Secular Humanism (33%)
24. Taoism (25%)
25. Scientology (24%)
26. Nontheist (21%)
27. New Thought (20%)
I may be conservative :-P, but i'll still come to your UU church! hehehe... -

What Bible do you like?
by Tristram inhaving read nothing but the nwt all my life, i am interested in getting a couple other translations to see their interpretations of the scriptures.
i really don't have any idea where to start.
i have heard the niv has a distinctly "conservative evangelical" bent which doesn't really interest me, but what translations have you used that you like?

anakolouthos
I've really gotten a lot of use out of e-Sword & Bible Gateway. e-Sword in particular has been very helpful with research, since you can get pretty much any translation, Bible dictionary, or commentary under the sun as a module for it. It's an awesome program. I've only recently started venturing into other translations, but i do really enjoy my NIV Study Bible. I bought it before i had read anything about its alleged doctrinal bias, & i really love its rendering of a lot of scriptures. It's much less wordy than the NWT. I like the commentary & background it has before each book, & the extensive footnotes & cross-references on every page. I also enjoy The Message, although it's not a scholarly translation by any means. I think it's supposed be "hip" for the kids or something, but it is fun to read. Very easy to get into. I also love the archaic language of the King James Version... especially its famous rendering of the 23rd Psalm. The way it words the scriptures is very poetic & beautiful to me. It's a lot of fun comparing all the different versions out there. Hope you find one you like!

vitty: Thanks for bringing that out... i didn't realize our avatars were similar. I found a new one that i like a lot, don't think anyone else has this fellow & his pet.
Crumpet: Sorry, it is a bit of a tongue-twister. Feel free to abbreviate it, make something funny out of it, or just call me dude. :-P
On to the active topics! Hope everyone is having a fabulous night/day!

Howdy everyone! Just wanted to let everyone know that i've chosen a new alias for myself & re-joined the board. I really enjoyed what little posting i did under my first name (lost_sheep), but i kept having problems with every e-mail address i had associated with that name. Plus, i wanted something a little less bland (and, as some of you predicted, i don't feel nearly as lost as i did when i first posted here)... so i picked a nifty-sounding 5-syllable Greek word & got a Googlemail address. :-) I thought it sounded nifty, anyway. Plus, it has the added bonus of being meaningful to me... it's the Greek root of the English word anacoluthon. It means "not following." As in not following all of the Society's dogma. ;-) I recently got ahold of the WTS's Kingdom Interlinear Version, & am trying to learn at least a little New Testament Greek, so i thought a Greek word as an alias would be cool. Anywhooo...
Since i'll no longer be using my lost_sheep account on this board, if the admin wishes to remove it, that would be perfectly fine.
And to those of you whom i've e-mailed, my new (permanent) address for all my undercover "apostate" business will be anakolouthos(AT)googlemail(DOT)com.
Thanks again to everyone who makes JWD such an awesome place. I can't tell you how big of a help it's been to me the past few months. I look forward to getting to know all of you better. :-)
A.
