Post your favorite saying
by Scully ini was just pondering how the wts has, for over a century, been able to convince people to do what is contrary to their best interests with fear tactics that armageddon is coming soon, and i came up with what is going to be my pet phrase for a while:.
"only religion has the power to compel people to embrace sheer stupidity in the name of faith.
" ~ scully, december 28, 2006. i googled it, and didn't see that anyone else has claimed it, so until someone else finds an attribution for it, i'm claiming it as my own.

and now we have to silence you
by A Paduan inif a jw reads jw pulications, figures out it looks like a sham, and then brings up the inconvenient truths to "the wrong people" - is that all it takes to get silenced - ousted - removed - ceased etc ?

At best, a red flag will go up and you will be watched. At worst you could be disfellowshipped.

Baptism and At What Age?
by karnage ini have seen and noticed that most people who are raised as jw's get baptized at a young age.
ages like 14-19. how is it that someone can dedicate their life to jehovah at these ages, when maturity is still in development?
this seems to be something that jw's push and practice on a regular basis.

What a kook! Yes, make an official report. She needs to know this behavior is unacceptable and that you won't put up with it. Only send it to the elders if you have no fear of the consequences of celebrating Xmas.
Take care...

What contributes to a "climate of fear" in the congregation?
by truthseeker ini was thinking about how much fear there is among jehovah's witnesses in relating to each other.. if you could read the private thoughts of jw's, you'd probably be surprised at the level of fear they have of each other.. this fear is not likely to be the morbid kind of fear, but the other kind of fear that concerns "what will people think of me?".
you watched a movie at the weekend, it was rated pg, but you are afraid to tell your friends that you went to see it.. you were only able to report 4 hours of field service that month, but you are afraid to report this number so you tweak it.. you missed several meetings due to sickness, you still feel unwell, but you fear what the congregation may think so you force yourself to go.. you went on a weekend getaway, but you are afraid to tell the friends why you were missing that weekend in case they think you put kingdom interests last.. you watched a good book, but you are afraid to talk about it to your friends because they might be stumbled.. you heard of someone who got disfellowshipped but you are afraid to ask what happened.. you were unable to take friday off for the convention, but you fear what will be said about you.. you did not auxiliary pioneer during the memorial season and you are afraid people will think of you as spiritually weak.. .
not everyone will let these things bother them, but many do.. this climate of fear and worry about what the congregation may or may not think does not contribute to a loving atmosphere.. what other things can you think of that contribute to a climate of fear?.

So true Truthseeker! The spirit of fear is pervasive. Everything a witness does can be the object of scrutiny by others and be labeled a "stumbleing block" to someone. You always feel that someone is looking over your shoulder.
Is my skirt to tight or short? Is my son's video game too violent? Is my new vehicle to flashy? If I have a garden wedding will they think I commited fornication and can't get married in the KH? If I put tiny lights on my back patio, will they think they are Xmas lights? On and on and on...
Even in things that are "conscience" matters the Society prints things like: "a mature christian would... or a spirutual person wouldn't", so if you exercise your conscience and go against the flow you are still looked down upon. So, unless you do everything by the letter you will not measure up in someone's opinion, and even if you do you will be made to feel that you are not doing "enough", so your own conscience will condem you.

Why do apostates lie about where they get their information?
by slimboyfat init does no good.
i don't understant it - who do they think they're foolin'?.
i have just been listening to the judicual committee that disfellowshipped rick and laverne townsend and it is cringeworthy, to say the least, to listen to them cover-up, distort and outright lie about the sources of their information and the real background to their dissent.

Why? Because the second you say your source is "apostate" they will stop listening.
Why? Because, no matter how logical the reasoning or compeling the evidence, if you heard it from an "apostate" it's automaticaly false.
Why? Bacause some of us have too much to lose if we get disfellowshipped.
Have I answered your question?

Building on Blondie's comment: Witness kids can't go to pep rallys - but adults can act like crazed lunatics in behalf of their favorite team.
Witness kids can't got to prom - but adults can go to call reunions.
