jws celebrate birthdays?!
by dobbie ini was speaking to a friend last night, trying to explain why i don't go to meetings etc,(waste of time though she just can't seem to understand my point whatever i say), anyway she said as long as i don't d'a myself she can still speak to me.
she said they only d'f you if you commit a gross sin.
i refuted this saying if they knew i didn't agree with some of the teachings, sent a fathers day card etc and you weren't sorry they'd get rid of you.

crazy christians see bad news as good news, seem familiar?
by drew sagan indon't know if anybody put this up here yet or not.
i caught this link to harpers from boingboing.net, has some comments posted from a bunch of 'rapture ready' chrisians online.
sounds familiar to what i've seen from another crazy sect of christianity.... .

I've never been able to understand how jws can be glad when something terrible happens, all i can ever think about are what these people are suffering, especially the children. How can anyone be glad when pain and deaths occur? When a sister (who is trying to help me back) came round the other day and started talking about armageddon, all i could think about was losing my entire family as well as all the little ones dying, what sort of God wants us all to rejoice at the thought of it?!What's really worrying is that there are obviously other groups out there with the same mentality. Makes me feel sick..

Then she said you can be a jw and celebrate birthdays, etc and they can't do anything about it as it's not a gross sin!Has anyone heard this before?Seems like one of us is on another planet, hopefully not me! Was too shocked to ask her more as she also said some pretty hurtful untrue things to me and she was my best friend for years.Just wondered if anyone heard this before because i thought if you participated in any celebrations you'd get d'fd for sure.

Voluntary answering at meetings
by ThomasCovenant inwatchtower august 1st 1953 page 458.
'hence starting with the congregational study of this issue of the magazine, the conductor may call on persons whether they volunteer or not'.
i never saw this happen at my meeting.

I always hated answering up, I'd get in such a state i'd feel like i was going to pass out - and that was just putting my hand up!Once i was picked on unexpectedly to read a scripture,i knew the elder involved did it on purpose to make me speak up although he knew how shy i was , i felt such a fool because everyone else knew why he did it as well. I ended up telling him what i thought about it afterwards and they never did it again!

Are you happier out of the org?
by dobbie inhi everyone i was just wondering if those of you that have left the org for whatever reason, have found your'e much happier than when you were in it?probably a daft question but i tried to talk to a friend about how i was feeling about a few things and why i don't go to meetings and she said would i really be any happier out than in?it just got me thinking about why i joined in the first place, because i was lonely and down, although i still am several years later it seems!have you found life better on the outside?did you feel a sense of freedom or was it really hard to adjust?when i try to explain what i find hard in the religion they can always say something back that then makes me think i was wrong in the first place and it is the truth after all - aagh!

by PopeOfEruke inhey i was on holiday last week and we went to a sea-side night market and there was a food stand called "roadkill restaurant".
the motto was "you kill it, we grill it".

Why baptise young ones?
by dobbie injust had two months worth of mags shoved through my door(thank goodness i wasn't in but out with kids having fun!
)had a flick through them but what caught my attention was the july 1st watchtower 2nd study article "youths, make it your choice to serve jehovah".
it seems to be basically encouraging all the young ones to get baptised, and mentions one boy who was only thirteen!i was'nt born into the jws but i know that in my early teen years i would personally never have been emotionally ready for such a major commitment.

It just seems odd that they go on about how its wrong to christen babies but its okay to baptise young teenagers and bind them even closer to all the doctrines. I know my husband used to get a lot of pressure to get baptised and finally gave in at 18 whereas the rest of his sibs were still at school, think he was the most sensible one, what happens if the blood issue comes up and they have to deal with it what a lot of burden on young shoulders! Sorry to go on about it but it just does'nt seem right to me.

jgnat hi,great picture, i do often feel trapped somewhere i don't want to be anymore, just haven't the guts to fly away for freedom yet. Have had my head messed up for about 13 years now, needs serious de-junking! Don't want my little ones to grow up feeling the same way, it was having them that made me start to question certain things in the first place.

Thanks for all your comments, i said it was a daft question!i haven't been to a meeting for a while now, i am trying to fade away but have a feeling it won't be easy in my situation. I am very lucky though that none of my own family are jws and i have recently told them about the doubts i have been having and none of them said i told you so! My husband is also very supportive of whatever decision i make, but i do get scared at the thought of being shunned by people i have to see on a daily basis. I have been looking on this site for quite a while now and it has really helped open my eyes and have learnt so much that's kept quiet, especially 1975 that has shocked me, and the changing rules on organ transplants and blood, which is something that affected me personally and i will never forgive myself for.
