A question about lying and the Jehovah's Witnesses

i have seen questions regarding how much jehovah's witnesses lie all the time on yahoo answers.

here is the latest question:.

I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are not an apologist. I do understand that from your viewpoint, the WTBTS is simply saying that a Christian is not lying just because he refuses to divulge information. What you have to understand is that we all, from experience, know that they use this "theocratic warfare" excuse to cover up and misrepresent. For example, when I converted to this religion, I as told Charles Russell predicted that the end times would start in 1914 and that the end would very likely come in 1975 (but it's not a prophecy, wink, wink).

Based on the start of WW1, and other signs (also exaggerated or lied about) it seemed that he must have been directed by God. Actually, Russell thought the end of the system would come in 1914, the end, Armageddon and the return of Jesus Christ. It was only after nothing happened that they came up with the idea of "the beginning of the end" and Christ's "invisible presence". I also did not know about all the many other erroneous date predictions. Because I did not know these things (no internet yet), I was deceived into joining this religion. So, yes, this is a tough crowd, we were lied to and deceived, and we KNOW what is meant by theocratic warfare, it's not going to sell here.

If you truly are a study, you would be foolish not to research this organization more before you contemplate joining. Trust us, you will save yourself from making a very serious mistake.

The Watchtower says they do not prophesy, but that is just semantics. They make date predictions while at the same time saying they are God's only spirit directed organization. As not one of their many date predictions has come true, I ask you, why I should believe any predictions from a religion that has a 100% failure rate in predictions, including their many statements that "Armageddon is just around the corner" and we are "so close" to the end'?

Whatever happened to the "Fall of Babylon the Great" and the "drying up of the churches?

i am from the era of the babylon book, and all the wt predictions that the churches of christendom would "dry up".

the book babylone the great has fallen god's kingdom rules, said people would leave the churches of christendom, in droves and the ministers would have no more people in their churches while "god's organization" would see a tremendous increase, a huge overflowing great crowd, all streaming into the watchtower and coming to the "faithful and discreet slave" for instructions.

thirty years ago there were six million jw's , today after the "great increase", and " great crowd" is now ?

I converted to this religion in 1969, this was a major teaching, we all were waiting for signs of the fall of Babylon The Great. Then, pffffft, nothing, they stopped talking about it and the whole thing was dropped. I doubt most dubbies today are even aware of it, it's a distant memory at best. I know look back and realize that it was a very skewed viewpoint to think that all mainstream religions were evil and corrupt. It was just propaganda on the part of the WTBTS to make themselves seem better, the only true religion, the only one that God approves of.

Of course it seems crazy now, but at the time I fell for it. I have been to a few churches, they are just nice people doing their best, by no means the evil harlot the WTBTS made them out to be. We were duped.

so i'm young enough to not remember having hot prepared meals at assemblies, but heard all about it from my parents and the like.

but what i do remember were all of the cold sandwiches and institutional snacks and soda.

I had to look up bacon baps, I didn't know what they were. For the other yanks, it's bacon on a hamburger bun, who knew? I never really liked assembly food, it was OK, better than having to drag a cooler in I guess. The danish were OK and the puddings if they were not frozen solid. I never could eat the sandwitches, they made me gag. I feel sorry for the moms having to travel to a convention, packing dress clothes and everything else needed, then have to plan meals and pack food for everybody, as if it wasnt tough enough getting kids to sit for the for long boring session. I m so gladg not to have to do that anymore. I can have real vacations now.

Welcome, so glad you woke up to TTATT. I think most of us here went through tough times in leaving this organization, it is never easy. It must have been very difficult to get bad advice and be judged by people You thought were friends, but that is what happens in a cult, relationships are considered expendable.

I hope you new relationship works out. I moved two years to a community that has a large Filipino population, it has been a very positive experience, they are very nice people, very loving and family oriented.

i, for the first time ever, missed a flight.

out of the many hundreds of flights i have taken, i fiinally missed one.

marriott, in their exquisite kindness and my platinum status, have put me up for the night.

Traveling can be tough. The last time I flew, they changed the take off time five times (and also the gate), we finally left four hours late. That was the good part of the trip. I had to go home via Bart (Bay area train) Missed the last direct train, so I had to change trains, by then it's Friday evening commute, all over crowded, then the train got stopped due to police action. Finally make it across the bay, I had to change trains with two suitcases, many people, the train completely packed, I had to stand, praying I don't fall when the train stops (it has happened). I made it home, 12 hours after getting to the airport, tired, hungry and cranky, but so glad I am home.

i mean i can understand learning from the account, but this is kinda deviant.

I wonder what a child psychologist would make of this. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, because the picture is in the the Bible Stories book, but this seems to be even worse. Instead of just looking at a picture of a woman killed by God, now the children are actively involved, recreating the picture, as if they are trying to get children hardened to the idea of God slaughtering people.

i'm doing the fade but i reckon my big mouth could get me dfd.

i know plenty who've been dfd for fornication/adultery, but never met one dfd for speaking the truth.

Julia Orwell: I had no idea it was so common. I reckon if I get called in by the elders I'm gonna do that thing that women can do to get out of just about anything - turn on the water works!

I can get outof anything by "turning on the waterworks? Its news to me, I never got out of anything by crying. When I had to go before a JC, I cried up a storm, and it was not fake, I actually was truly repentant, they disfellowshipped me anyway. I am racking my brain trying to think up even one occasion where crying got me anything, I can't think of one time. In my experience it just makes people either uncomfortable or mad. I must be doing it wrong.

do you often feel overwhelmed by your environment or the people around you?

I read this book and believe I am a HSP. I always thought I was weird because things that other people enjoyed, like parties, were excruciatingly painful to me. I would enjoy them for a bit, but then get overwhelmed by the lights and noise and trying to talk to so many different people. I absolutely cannot stand overhead lights, and will often do things in low light rather than turn the lights on, which my husband doesn't understand.

It was difficult when we were first married, because my husband is a very affectionate person, and likes to hold hands and even walk arm in arm (and he still does). He also loves to eat out and do a lot of things on the weekends which was nice, but sometimes I felt I was getting sensory overload, too much food, touch, sight and sounds. We learned to compromise, but sometimes I wish he was like other guys and just watched sports on TV so I could just stay home.

It's hard being this sensitive, but it is also a gift at times. I can sometimes pick up nuances in conversations that others miss. I am also artistic and creative and when I am in the groove the ideas just seem to flow, and that is a wonderful feeling, so being sensitive a good thing at times.

Heartofaboy I am so glad you were able to see that getting married to someone you are not attracted to would be a big mistake. I wonder how many bad marriages the WTBTS creates by fostering the erroneous notion that homosexuality is some kind of choice? I had a friend who married a brother who was gay. Fortunately the marriage ended quickly and there were no children involved, but it was very traumatic for her, and of course it was a subject of gossip for years.

Nothing good can come of a marriage like that. I have been in both a very unhappy marriage and a very unhappy marriage, and I cannot imagine a happy marriage without sexual passion and desire. Yes, commitment and shared goals are importment, but a marriage without sexual attraction is just a business arrangement. No matter how hard you might try, it's not going to be the same.

It's just a recipe for failure, leaving one partner to feel unloved and unwanted, and the other to feel frustrated and guilty. And what of any children to brought into this mess? Even if the marriage doesn't end, the children will know something is wrong, even if they do not know what it is. The WTBTS is way off on this one and they have no doubt ruined many lives with this teaching, which is contrary to what science tells us about same sex attraction - it's not a choice and it will not go away.
