Could you help me with a little Witness history ?
by ukgirl inas part of a student film project that i am completing i will be conducting a telephone interview with an exjw tomorrow.. the person i am interviewing was a witness between the years of the 50's (born in) - late 80's so obviously would have been in their late teens for the prophecies and events of 1975.. as this person is older than i, i am plan to tailor my questions around being a witness in that time period.
i just wonder if you could point me in the direction of any more date specific events surrounding this time period that i could touch upon in my interview ?.

I was baptized in 1968 when I was 13. As a new convert I studied out of the blue "truth" book. This book was designed to be studied in six months, because they taught that the time left in this system was so reduced they needed to convert people quickly. There was a sense of urgency, we had to warn people they must become Jehovah's Witnesses or die a horrible death in only a few years. It seems incredible to me now, but I really thought the world was going to end in a few years and I would soon be petting lions in paradise. Life decisions were made based on this belief. Of course college was out, who needs that, the Awake firmly stated in 1969 that young people such as myself would not have time for a career in this system of things . People were commended for selling their house and living on the proceeds in order to preach more. Of course this was the end, things were so bad they couldn't get much worse, right?
It astounds me now that the Watchtower pretends that they never predicted the end would come in 1975, only acknowledging that some "ran ahead", nothing to do with THEM, THEY never said such a thing. Technically, maybe they didn't, but they very much manipulated things to the point that every Jehovah's Witness believed the world would end in 1975. From the belief that 1975 marked six thousand years of man's existence, a perfect time to start the so called thousand year reign of Christ, to the widely stated belief that the generation alive in 1914 would not pass away before the end of this system, it was preached from the platform, discussed at conventions and taught at home bible studies. Of course they put most everything that was in writing in such a way they could not be held accountable, this was not their first failed prediction.
I bought it hook, line and sinker, and it took me thirty years to figure out how completely I had been lied to and manipulated. Sadly most current JWs were not around then, or have since forgotten what really happened, substituting the Watchtower's doctored retelling of events for their own true memories. Such is the power of a cult that the lie becomes the truth and there are a whole new group of people to lie to. The Watchtower has been using the fiction that the end is close for well over a hundred years, it's useful to keep people afraid, because frightened people are easily manipulated.

Yet Another JW Child Molester in the news and again its South Wales
by jimtheman699 inhttp://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3007905/south-wales-jehovah-s-witness-36-sex-15-year-old-schoolboy-avoids-jail-sentence.html.

I don't know why she wasn't given jail time, is it more common there to let pedophiles off for a first offence or is it because she's a woman?

I'm the one who needs to "come to his senses" ?????
by Phizzy ini was in conversation a few weeks back with a jw i have known for at least four decades.
most of it was catching up on family stuff, he has loads of kids, some have married and produced sprogs since i left.
all news to me.. i demolished a couple of his fatuous arguments, and then he decided to scuttle away, throwing this over his shoulder as he went :.

Why would you feel bad about being blunt when he was being insulting and blunt to begin with?
Jehovah's Witnesses keep up their delusions because no one ever challenges them, why not challenge them? It is possible to disagree without being disagreeable. I might have said "well I did get my head right, that's why I left".

Mind control.
by New day inin a recent thread someone mentioned that the wtbts uses mind control techniques.
do you think this is a conscious ploy?
if it is it would mean that the leaders of my religion (i am still an active jw) set out consciously to control people.
-
LisaRose
Of course it's deliberate, there is no way they don't know what they are doing. Every cult uses pretty much the same techniques, and cults don't even have to be religious, it's not the beliefs, it's the culture. Controlling your time, controlling what you read, claiming to being the only route to salvation are all things done to keep people enslaved to a concept/group. Using fear and intimidation by telling people they will die at Armageddon is classic cult, that's why they keep making erroneous date predictions. Fearful people are easily manipulated, that's why Armageddon is always "just around the corner". Telling you that you must only associate with other JWs keeps you from seeing how illogical their beliefs are. If everyone you knows believes the same thing there is no one to point out the logical fallacies.

Attitudes of WT Society Leaders Towards " Rights " of Child Abuse Victims and Elders
by flipper inthese excerpts i'm sharing with you are from the july 1st, 1989 letter from the wt society to the elders and it gives outsiders a good idea of the attitude of the wt society leaders towards child abuse victims and even towards their own appointed elders.
and it shows wt society is first, foremost, and mainly concerned about financial fallout from potential lawsuits.
one short quote was used from this letter on the abc news nightline report about candace conti - but what i'm going to share with you will be other excerpts from that same letter that are just as, or even more revealing.

God forbid any JW imagine they have "rights", everyone knows a JW only has the "rights" the society gives them, which means none.
Really, it is good advice for elders to not divulge confidential matters, too bad they tend to only do that when it involves pedophilia, the one case where they should warn others.

Drugs and Alcohol Ruin Your Life
by campaign of hate inthis point was raised in another thread vaguely, and wanted to try and expand on it.. the wt has said (and rightly so in my opinion) "that excessive use of drugs and alcohol can ruin your life".
in my eyes this is a fact.. this is where it starts to get a little suspicious, as they also say (or subtly hint at) "that if you leave the wt you will becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol and will ruin your life".. its almost like a self fulfilling prophecy.
as there are a lot who leave the borg and they do start drinking heavy or smoking, or taking drugs...or whatever.. the wt capitalizes on the fact that people want more freedom, and they subtly ingrain the thought that.

I actually drink far less now than when I was a JW. It's part of JW brainwashing that those who leave are unhappy, bitter people who have nothing to look forward to except drinking and drugs. While that might be true for some, it's hardly typical.
If some do drink more after leaving, it's either because they haven't researched and found out tatt, so still feel guilty or because they are suffering from being shunned.

Why do I suddenly want to start reading JW literature and going to Kingdom Halls?
by yogosans14 inis good calling me back or am i just letting my emotions get the best of me?also i really want to be closer to my jw family.
btw i was never baptized and i consider myself a born again christian i go to a baptist church and wath televangelist and i have expirenced gods presence like never before but sometimes i get fearful and think "what if jws are right and i'm wrong" than i'm screwed!but if there wrong and i'm right it doesn't look to good for them.. i would prefer if nobody posted "god isn't real" type comments.
i truly believe he is real but i respect why some are atheists..

Many people raised as JWs initially reject it, but some are drawn back because they still believe it on some level. Some come back when they have children, as they become afraid for them, some come back when they have problems, and some come back to make their family happy.
Many are brought back for the same reason as you, the dreaded "what if they are right?". I don't know your history, or why you left, but if you left because you didn't think it was the truth, why are you doubting it now? Do you understand cult mind control and how it works? Because that is what the Watchtower uses to keep people afraid to leave.
Why would you think there is any possibility that the Watchtower is God's only chosen organization? They lie about their history of past wrong predictions, they use cult mind control techniques, they hide child molesters and break up families with their harsh shunning practices. In my mind there is zero chance they are being used by God, so I don't waste time wondering "what if they are right?" anymore than I wonder "what if the moon is made of green cheese?"

For all still in.... fakers. Help.
by Sofia Lose inam i alone in this feeling?
i wish i could muster the cojones needed to tell my husband "i want a divorce, move away, not be a jw anymore!".
i find myself screaming these same words over and loud inside my mind, several times a day, and yet on the outside my actions could not be more opposed to these inner feelings.. sometimes i worry that this internal conflict will cause me to go crazy.

Pay no attention to to Mr. Doubt Sofia, it seems he kept the holier than thou attitude of the JWs
Only you can know the right thing to do. Nobody here knows you or your husband, or what you are going through, so it's ridiculous to pass judgement. It's usually best to work on a marriage, especially if young children are involved, but ultimately it's your decision. Some marriages cannot be saved and no loving God would expect you to sacrifice any chance for happiness if that is the case. It's also not necessarily a good thing for your husband if you stay even though your feelings for him are gone. It's possible he would be happier with someone else, someone who loves him as you cannot. That is the hard part, knowing if it's possible to love him or not.
I realize I did my ex husband no favors by staying. In an attempt to be a submissive wife I let him get away with a lot of things that I shouldn't have. He only thought of himself and I enabled him by staying and taking it. Possibly the marriage might have been saved if I had stood up to him earlier on, but by the time I left I couldn't stand to look at him. There was nothing to save.
I didn't make that mistake with my second marriage. We have issues like anyone else, but we work them out because I learned to speak up if something bothered me. It's not perfect, but it is a marriage in a way my first one never was. My husband is my soul mate and best friend and I love him deeply.

There is a picture circulating on the internet right now of a woman announcing the news. Many people think the shape of her chest area not covered by her sweater looks like a penis. It's obviously unintentional, I doubt the woman picked that sweater that day because it made her chest area look like a penis.
I have read that men think about sex more often during the day than women and are more visually stimulated when it comes to sexual images. It's seems they are just "hard wired" (pun intended) to see the shape of a penis (or breasts, etc.)
I read the book "subliminal seduction" back in the seventies and believed the premise that it was possible to be influenced by images that were not consciously perceived. The book gave an example of an image of popcorn that was inserted into a movie preview for a fraction of a second. Supposedly it caused people to go buy more popcorn, even though they didn't notice the popcorn on a conscious level. The only problem is that it's a total urban legend, the is no record of such a test ever being done.
The image could have been placed there deliberately, but either way I don't see what difference it makes, it's a total non issue to me. There have been several threads about this already, time to give it a rest.
