Äkta Människor (Real Humans)
by Simon inwe've just started watching this swedish parallel-present series about human-like robots (hubots) seeking independence.. its really well done but subtitled (if you didn't mind the original "girl with the dragon tattoo") and the best description of it i was saw the stepford wives meets blade runner.
kind of creepy and unsettling and touches on some adult themed topics (robots for sex).. anyone else seen it?
i only started watching because i was too lazy to get up and get the remote one night but it was pretty gripping.. .

I'll check it out, might be on Netflix. I have seen all the Dragon tattoo movies, I don't mind the subtitles. I just finished watching a Danish series, Dicte, that had a JW angle, now I am watching Rita, another Danish series about a non conformist teacher. -

Boy, 7, taken away from his parents. Judge rules he has been damaged by his Jehovah's Witness mother's religious beliefs
by snugglebunny ini guess that's what a cult upbringing does to a child:.

As much as I hate this religion it's a bit of a stretch to say that the mother's religion damaged the child. Lots of Jehovah's Witnesses have children that don't do things like this. It may be that the child has some mental illness or is on the Autism spectrum (my money is on that) and the manner in which he acts out revolves around the religion because that is what he knows. If he has Aspergers for example, he would have a hard time in understanding that it's not appropriate to force his beliefs onto others. It will be interesting to see what happens to him in foster care.

Why don’t we have a better story?
by iconoclastic in1. some say we are all gods, and god is omnipresent..
2. some say: god created his children who later challenged his sovereignty, who in turn asked his eldest son: go down to the world, do not resist the wicked, but be murdered by them, the value of which will be used to atone the sins of the world..
3. universe arose out of a big bang.

There is no reason you can't be a faithful Christian AND an evolutionist.
So true, although you can't believe in a literal interpretation othe bible if you accept evolution. I am not a believer, but it bothers me when people assume that because you are a Chrristian you can't believe in evolution (or accept homosexuality, etc) without violating the tenants of your faith. But there are many flavors of Christianity and not all of them fundamental. It's like they are telling you that you are doing it wrong, lol. Fortunately they don't actually get a vote on that.

Evolutionists adhere to the view that the first organisms on earth were asexual. If so, why only some species would abandon asexual reproduction in favor of more costly and inefficient sexual reproduction? Exactly how did we arrive at two separate genders—each with its own physiology?
In asexual reproduction the offspring is identical to the parent. Sexual reproduction is a benefit in evolutionary terms because if an organism had beneficial DNA mutations, that benefit has a better chance of being passed down, and then being combined with other beneficial mutations through sexual reproduction. Combining and recombining DNA has the effect of masking bad genetic mutations and or repairing them.( For further study, look up fault tolerance on Wikipedia). This benefit is so great it more than makes up for the inconveniences and inherent dangers of sexual reproduction, and explains why most organisms reproduce sexually.

Disfellowshipping Image
by naazira inthis photo can be found in the april 15 , study edition article titled:.
why disfellowshipping is a loving provision.
just by looking at this image we can see how quickly the barrier between the congregation and former member is put up, after the announcement that this sister is no longer one of jehovah's witneses.

The Stoning of Soraya M. is a recent movie based on a true story. It's well done and well worth watching to see what happens when old testament bible rules are applied in modern times. -

What's the Watchtower's latest view on "The End" or "The Second Coming of Jesus Christ"? Most act like its not coming!
by MagicMItchJensen ini posted that article from the miami newspaper, others posted the united kingdom's articles on jws and isis.
what's the official position of the watchtower about the last days, are we in them or are we going to wait another 2,000 years like the jews believe?.
i remember arguing at work with friends that nostradamus end date of 3000 was wrong, are there other past prophets you know of who predicted the world's end past our time?.

I think that deep down, most Jehovah's Witnesses know that the end is not coming, at least anytime soon. They go out door to door, not to warn people of impending judgement, but in a perfuntory way, because they need to write down some hours on a time slip, to keep from being criticised by the elders, and as insurance, just in case Armageddon does come.
The Watchtower is the boy who cried wolf one too many times, they may keep the most devoted believing the end is coming soon, but everyone else has figured it out, even though they cannot admit it to others, or even to themselves.
If they really believed what they claim they wouldn't waste hours of field service knocking on the doors of empty houses and driving all over town to make one return visit. There is no urgency to their work, no effectiveness, no real results. 1914 is a meaningless date, based on questionable logic and an incorrect date for the fall of Jerusalem. Armageddon didn't happen then, as the bible students thought it it would at the time, or 1975 as they said, and it won't happen next year or any other year.

Is RIDICULE acceptable in online debating?
by nicolaou inthis topic was inspired by one of fhn's comments on the 'warzone' thread, so i'll just restate my post there .
.. "i've been wondering for a while now if ridicule really is an unacceptable feature in debate - it certainly isn't a valid form of argumentation.
the thing is, some individuals really do come out with the most laughable nonsense and parade it as a serious proposition that merits attention.

You think only believers have left? You're sadly mistaken. Intellectual people don't usually feel the need to ridicule either people or ideas. Pseudo intellectuals, that's another story.
I agree. I sometimes feel the atmosphere here is very negative, and I do think of leaving. I do stay in the end, but I don't usually go into certain topics, and I am sure many others have left for this reason. I do not get the attitude of some posters, and I am an atheist.
Most of us here were obviously JWs at one time, so why ridicule others for believing in God as you once did? You have learned critical thinking skills and are an Atheist now, good for you. Maybe others have not been out as long as you, or not had exposure to critical thinking as much as you, or have your intelligence. Does that make it OK to use your superior knowledge to ridicule them?
If your intent is to change hearts and minds by this, then you have failed, imo. If your intent is to show off your superior knowledge, belittle others and so feel good about yourself, then yes, you have succeeded. It's easy to go for the cheap put down, harder to understand, feel empathy, and maybe help others to learn something, if not the poster then those who may be lurking.
I get it, some believers are annoying, many have used tired arguments that have been used by others, and they aren't really interested in meaningful discussion. But for every one of these there are ten others who believe in God, but won't post or even stay and read the comments because you made them feel unwelcome here. I am not totally innocent in this, there are posters that push my buttons as well, but I try to be better than that.
I am not aiming ths at any one poster, I like most people here and think they have good intentions, but I do think some comments cross a line. It's not something unique to this board, it seems to be an internet staple these days, last night we had a flame war on Next Door (a neighbor to neighbor social network). But please keep in mind many readers here have recently left an abusive religion, they may be still recovering from this, they don't need to be made to feel stupid because they still believe in God.

Pioneering requires long hours. Sisters tend to wear long skirts as they are easier to climb in and out of vans and cars. You also dont have to wear leg wear (stockings or hose) or have nice legs to wear a long skirt. Heck, you dont even have to shave your legs if you are not of a mind to. Who will know? So this quickly became a standard of dress for housewives in the 30 and 40 yr old range. They were homeschooling the future Bethelites, and C.O.s and pioneering while they did it!
I Remember back on the day (90's) Long skirts were very fashionable. You would think that would make the elders happy, but no. Because it was hot in the summer (inland California) with at least thirty days a year of temps over 100 degrees ( Fahrenheit. For you Brits, in Celsius it would be f'ing hot). Most women gladly shed their pantyhose, and why not, no one could see your legs. The elders dictated that going bare legged was not appropriate for meetings or service. Also, denim skirts and dresses were not appropriate either. I seriously considered this counsel and decided to give up.... field service.
When long skirts went out of style I gladly gave the up, frankly they were not all that flattering, especially my short curvy figure, but I never went back to pantyhose.

How do you distinguish Americans?
by paulmolark inhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igk4xvzwocw.
apparently americans are all chubby, baggy clothes wearing optimistic fast food eaters.
who knew.

We Brits are gradually becoming Americans....a lot of our TV is from the US...and bloomin' great it is too.
Then I must be becoming a Brit because I watch BBC all the time, lol. Cross culturalism I guess. I do often have to translate for my husband, he is hard of hearing and between the accents and differences in slang he sometimes doesn't get what they are saying. He likes the French or Italian movies better because of the subtitles.

This is not aimed at you Millie, I've never seen you be rude, but some here have a hard time drawing a line between direct and belittling.
