I get it, I really do. There is emotion there, no matter that most of it makes no sense, things are never that cut and dried. -

Nice moment today
by Theburstbubble inso it's been a few months since i last went to a meeting but i've still had lots of guilty feelings about leaving, such as am i doing the right thing, thinking about friends and family, where do i go from here etc etc.
but i think once you stop believing you can't go back.. anyway, today i had a very nice experience.
my daughter had been to nursery today and when she got home i asked her what she had done and she excitedly told me they had been doing pumpkins.

These simple little pleasures in life are actually a big thing when you have not been able to enjoy them for many years.
I am looking forward to halloween. Our neighborhood has gotten a reputation as the place to go for trick or treating, so we get about 600 trick or treaters, it's major. My husband and I decided to just go with it, we decorate and dress up, this year we are going to be minions.

Another anti-gay Republican Senator (in the USA) caught advertising his body

I don't hate gays for who they are but I hate having their lifestyle forced in my face. I believe this sentiment reflects most who oppose gay marriage and the like.
What do you mean by "having their lifestyle forced in my face"? Does it bother you if two gay guys hold hands? If so, why? How is that forcing their lifestyle on to you? Or does the mere fact that they exist and can get married bother you? I do get why some people are uncomfortable with it, this is a huge societal change in a fairly short time frame, but really, do you honestly expect gay people to go back in the closet? Pretend they aren't gay? Not hold hands in public?
Do you feel it's ok to hold hands with your wife? If so, do you think you are forcing your heterosexual lifestyle on them?

Welcome, glad you found us.
It's always hard make your own decisions when you are still living with your parents. Perhaps it is time to start working towards getting out on your own? I know it's hard these days, but if you want to live your life on your own terms it helps if you are fully supporting yourself.
Otherwise, just keep politely refusing to go to the meetings, there is little they can do to force you, hopefully they will eventually accept your decision.

No 'Tight Pants' policy is now official - classed as 'disturbing'
by wizzstick inin short:- tight pants is no longer just a am3 hang up (or is that a hang up on the well hung?
)- brothers who have effeminate body language are flagged up- as are sisters with 'masculine' hair styles or dress- such dress is 'disturbing to the congregation'- the above must heed the (repeated) counsel from the elders...or they get stripped of the right to share on the ministry- however...this will not be revealed (announced) to the congregation.
wow.

They have young people battling anxiety and depression and a high rate of suicide, but they are obsessing about this? I thought this was just a pet peeve of tight pants Tony, an off hand remark soon forgotten, but no, they really are going to go there. It's just a fashion trend, not really specific to gays, nor are the pants usually tight enough to be immodest, I personally like that whole hipster look. That they have the lowest retention rate of any religion, yet continue to fixate on how pants fit shows just how clueless and out of touch they are.

You have a $100,000,000 budget to do a global campaign against the WTBS worldwide. How would you spend it?
by JWchange inwhat if by inheritance, winning the lottery or any other way, you suddenly got your hands on $150m after tax.
you maybe would spend a third of this giving your extended family financial security for life.
you maybe would buy a boat and a few investment properties.

I would fund a documentary to be made about the Watchtower, putting enough money into it is factually correct and of high enough quality so that it would get noticed, advertise it heavily, then let it be downloaded for free.
I would fund a JW depression and suicide hotline and then publicize it so that every JW knows of its existence. I would give financial assistance to any JW that needed therapy but who couldn't afford it.
I would set up a scholarship so that every JW or ex JW who wanted it can afford higher education.
I would hire a public relations firm to represent the ex JW point of view in any news event where the Watchtower was involved.
I would make Crisis of Conscience and Combatting cult mind control available free to every JW or ex JW.

Belief in God Can Be Turned Off Like a Light Switch
by cofty inresearchers in york used magnetic stimulation to target an area of the brain called the medial frontal cortex in a group of volunteers.
a control group received a sham treatment.. both groups were asked to think about death.
the group who experienced the magnetic energy reported 32.8% less belief in angels, god and heaven.. when faced with difficult challenges people often take refuge in ideology.

I think we are just scratching the surface of understanding human behavior and how our brain functions. It's a very exciting time, new discoveries are made every day, we know so much more than we did even ten or twenty years ago.

This is for all JW's out there...
by Divergent in.
sorry to be so blunt, but you only have yourself to blame if you realize something is wrong but allow your cognitive dissonance to kick in.
if you are confronted with facts which are reported by reliable sources which are hard to dispute and deny, and you choose to dismiss these as "apostate lies" rather than looking at these from an objective point of view, it's your fault and you deserve the consequences of willful ignorance!.

I have mixed feeling about the OP. Yes, we are all responsible for the decisions we make, but the Watchtower lies about their history and practices. They use their understanding of human behavior to manipulate and control their members. Are victims responsible for being victimized? Maybe, to an extent, but the majority of the responsibility lies with the Watchtower.
I look back at my time as a JW and, probably like all of us, wonder what I could have done differently to prevent wasting thirty years in a soul sucking cult.
I was thirteen when my parents and I started a bible study, I was much influenced by my much older sister, who I adored, and who became a JW before me. I loved the idea of a paradise earth, I was naive and took many things at face value. The Watchtower seemed to have all the answers in a troubled world. I researched at the library, but little information was there (obviously pre internet) that might have helped me, and of course I was told not to listen to "bitter apostates".
From that point its just like anyone else, meetings reinforce your beliefs, you have no reason to question things, you get busy with raising a family and making a living. It was not until my forties that I started learning critical thinking skills, and also had some difficult circumstances that caused me to start to question things. Once I did, I quickly lost my faith, I walked away and didn't look back, I didn't even find JWN or other JW critical sites, I just knew that the Watchtower wasn't what they claimed.
So, did I deserve what I got? I don't know, maybe to a certain extent. But I feel the majority of the blame goes to the leaders of this religion, that lied, that hid their history, that used mind control techniques to keep people ignorant and enslaved.
