God was someone that I had a one sided relationship with for thirty years. I decided that was long enough, if he wanted to have a relationship with me, he had to put in a little more effort. Fifteen years later I'm still waiting, I guess he wasn't interested.

A philosophical question .... what does the word God mean to you personally ?
by Finkelstein into myself it means to seek knowledge and understanding of are selves and the world in which we live.. unfortunately history has shown whenever one tries to connect to god and of his knowledge through men who say they themselves are connected to god through spiritual wifi ie.
gb members of the jehovah's witnesses for example, one usually ends up finding a accumulation of only man's acquired knowledge.
over thousands of years of trying to connect to a god(s) for help and answers, mankind has eventually relinquished himself to seeking answers through scientific investigative acquired knowledge of the world in which we live in.

Evolution is a Fact #11 - Tiktaalik
by cofty inone of the biggest gulfs that life has had to cross was the transition from sea to dry land.. fish have conical shaped heads, reptiles have flat heads.
fish have no necks; their heads are attached to their shoulders by a series of bony plates.
land-dwelling animals all have necks; their heads can move independently of their shoulders.

Yes, you are right Konceptual. It's a common misconception that evolution is something that happened in the past and has stopped. Species will continue to evolve and adapt to an ever changing world. I read of a case where a species of fish became separated into two groups when a river was dammed up. At the time of the separation, some in each group had a particular characteristic, some didn't. This characteristic was an advantage for those in the new upstream environment, but not for those in the downstream environment. Within a few generations most of the upstream fish carried this variation while very few of the downstream fish did.

Aspeger's syndrome, ASD and Autism - How do you know if you have it?
by KateWild inon another thread i was asked by fadetoblack about my asd.
sorry ftb i didn't respond, but here is your post again and i will respond on this new thread.. i'm curious to know how you know you were born with asperger's syndrome.
it seems to be extremely hard to clinically diagnose, but popular to self-diagnose.

I've always been curious about Autism spectrum disorders, I wonder what could have happened to children to have something affect them in such a profound way, and how parents cope with it, how some children are able to get better, while others not so much. I was painfully shy and socially awkward as a child (truthfully, I still am to a certain extent) so I can emphasize with those who are on the spectrum. I read the book The Mysterious Case of The Dog in the Night, which is a mystery involving a boy with autism and his father. Although it is fiction, it really helped me understand how someone with Autism thinks.
I worked with someone who I realized after the fact probably suffered from the disorder. A brilliant man, he helped me a lot when I first started working with him as he had a lot more experience and training in programming, which was a part of our job. Then he became offended when I didn't take take his instructions the way he thought I should and began shunning me, it was very difficult in a small group of five people. Then he started playing practical jokes on our senior manager and didn't want to stop, even when she specifically said it was not appreciated anymore. I wish I had realized it at the time, I think I could have handled the situation much better. We did eventually work things out, but he was laid off, he had done the same thing to others, so he was one of the first to get axed when the company failed. I really felt bad for him as he had a family to support.
There was an interesting article in the Washington post this morning on some research currently being done. They are using prairie voles, as they form strong family bonds much like humans. When they blocked oxytocin receptors in the brain, the voles did not respond and give comfort to other voles who had been given an electric shock, as they normally would have.
The researchers said that breaking down the role of oxytocin in empathy may help us better understand and treat psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia, as well as developmental disabilities, such as autism spectrum disorder, that appear to be related to a disruption of a person's ability to detect and respond to the emotions of others. The researchers suggested that this indicates that oxytocin may improve social engagement in autism

I remember the old evolution book, one of their reasons for not accepting evolution was the lack of fossil record, that there weren't any transitional species. Of course this was a giant whopper, there have always been, but it's true that at one time there wasn't a huge amount of such fossils that were known.
Part of the problem is that many of the transitional species died out so long ago, bones don't last that long, there had to be very specific circumstances that cause bones to turn into a fossil. But they have found plenty of such transitional species and more are being found every day, by scientists like this that use targeted searches.

I am sorry this thread was derailed by a discussion on Muslims. This was partially my fault as I made a comment about some very hateful racist things some one posted on my Facebook feed. It was actually a comment on racism, but not a comment about Muslims, so I don't know why anyone would bring that into the discussion. I generally try to stay out of the threads on Muslims, but since this has been raised, I feel I have to respond.
Of course rapists must be dealt with, I don't think anyone would question that, but it makes me sad that people have become so intolerant and hateful towards anyone simply because of their race, religion or sexual orientation. There are millions of Muslims, of course some of them are going to be evil, bad, horrible people and it's true that some Muslim cultures treat women very badly. But I still don't believe that we must condemn every Muslim simply because of their religion.
I think people have become fearful, as people are always fearful of those that are different and that fear makes them intolerant. I think those fears have some basis in fact, but the danger is greatly exaggerated. Anytime you have any large group of immigrants you will have issues, sometimes serious issues. I don't know what the solution is, but I know the solution is not hatred, that just makes things worse.
As Jehovah's Witnesses we were often looked down upon by others because of our religion, we all know what that is like, it didn't feel good . Of course now we know our former religion was a bunch of lies and did not help us or make us better people, but that did not make US bad or evil, just mistaken, we all tried to do the best we could with what we thought to be true at the time. Still, we did things that are wrong, like shunning others, and we even would have let our own children die because of what our leaders told us to do. I imagine most Muslims are just doing what they have been raised to believe is the right thing also and their religion is also just part of who they are.
But obviously I am in the minority on this issue, I've tried to avoid the subject, but it's impossible, so I think it's best if I take a break from this place for a while and focus on more positive things in my life.

I am constantly shocked at how intolerant people are everywhere, it makes me sad. Someone I knew and liked that was a Facebook friend "liked" something that I found to be racist, mean spirited and factually untrue. It was shocking to me. I unfriended her and told her why, which of course DoD not go well, but WTF. I don't think she realized that anything you like on facebook will show up in the feed of all your friends. But when did racism and hatred become socially acceptable? Is this the Trump affect? The man says hateful, racist nonsense and his poll numbers continue to rise. Are we going to move backwards as a society as far as tolerance for gays and lesbians and people of color?
