  LTS, it sounds like you were married to a very cruel person. But I guess that is the Dubbie way, no sympathy. My husband's family (notJW) have a motto; If you are looking for sympathy, you will find it in the dictionary, it's between Shi* and syphilis.

  I guess that is why I wasn't a very good JW, I never knocked on doors that said no soliciting, I was not going to antagonize someone who had so clearly indicated they do not wish to be bothered, what is the point? If anything, you would just be turning them away from your message. The same with Beware of Dog signs, they are there for a reason, why risk a dog bite?

  While the dog owner is primarily responsible for the attack, if that sign was in the window, obviously it meant there was an aggressive dog in the home, I think the ladies are at least partially to blame, they should have skipped that door.

  Still a tragedy, I wouldn't wish that on anybody. I hope they recover fully.

  is the information on this webpage* regarding the socioeconomic conditions of jws a fair connection to the all too familiar wts quote of 1969?

  does the report's statistics appear to be plausible given your personal observations?

  Yes, I feel that my JW belief lowered my socio economic status, for various reasons. First, I did not go to college. I converted (along with my parents) and was bapptized in 1969 at 14 at the height of the 1975 hysteria. I laughed at my guidance counselors who suggested I go to college. I married at 18, like many of my peers, who were desperate to get married, partially because there wasn't anything else to do, and partially because we feared we could never marry if we went into the new system single.

  My chances for financial prosperity were further impacted because my husband was unstable and couldn't keep a job, and I could not divorce him due to the Watchtower divorce rules. It was not really accepted for a wife and mother to work full time, but I eventually found work, because I had to. I worked my way up until I was making a decent wage, but that took several years. It took me twenty years to reach the kind of income I would have hat in five years, had I gone to college, and not been hampered by a bad marriage.

  so this morning we flirt and i tell her what a "dirty girl" she is for buying those books...but i was thinking this from a girl who broke a frying pan on my car years ago because i didnt want to go to the meetings.

  slowly i wore down that rock that she is with little facts and qoutes...i would not have stayed with her if she remained the fanatic witness she was....also she now swears like a sailor...i like that..

  I tried to read that book, the writing was so bad I was unable to get more than ten or fifteen pages. I am astounded it has become so popular. I have heard it's due to e-readers, that women are able to buy sexually graphic novels discretely
  now. I have nothing against the concept, many women suffer from low sex drive, so I am all for it if it it helps women (and their partners) add some spice to their love life.

  I just hope they come up with some erotic novels with better writing.

  Throw away or lock up the bible story book, and hide the other literature. The bible is OK. If your family is the type to ask nosy questions, just tell them you study the bible with them, and do so, but don't give them any JW dogma along with it. Answer any question they have from a non JW viewpoint. As you read, think of alternative explanations for the scriptures commonly used to justify JW beliefs.

  If they ask or talk about Armageddon, say "Do you think a God of love would murder innocent children, or adults that happened to be born in the wrong country?" Read up on cult mind control so you can be aware of it if they express any of the dubbie thought patterns. Explain to them about circular logic so they can spot it when they hear it from the Kingdom Hall. Teach them to value themselves and their own thoughts, feeling and values so they won't be vulnerable to hand their life over to something that promises salvation in exchange for giving up their soul.

  Teach them that just because someone thinks they speak for God, it doesn't make it true. Tell them that you believe in science and evolution. As they get older, tell them about the many lies and wrong predictions of the Watchtower. Show them how they predicted the end in 1897, 1914, 1925 and 1975. Tell them the story of the boy who cried wolf and ask them if they think they should believe in an organization that has a 100% failure rate on predictions.

  I agree with you Farkel, if we think we have found "The Way", then we are wrong. As a dubbie, we all thought we had " The Truth", only to find out it was "The Lie". The fact that I was so wrong about so many things for so long caused me to question everything I thought I knew. When I first left, I was quite confused, if this wasn't it, what was? It was uncomfortable to think that there is no explanation for anything. All I could do was move forward, hoping the answers would come to me. As time went on I began to realize that I didn't need to have all the answers, that this state of seeking, of questioning, was actually better than stupidly going around thinking I had all the answers to life's problems.

  It has been 13 years since I left. My spiritual path has led me to the point of attending a church, I just missed being part of a faith based community. It is about as far removed from the Jehovah's Witnesses as you can get while still calling themselves Christian. They have no doctrine, they accept all who come. The pastor said to me that on any given Sunday, 30 percent of the congregations is probably Athiest, the next Sunday, 30 percent, but not the same people as last week. It just feels right, so I will see how it goes, I'm not ready to join just yet. I am still a seeker, I just find I enjoy being around fellow seekers.

  Are we all bitter?

  i posted a link on fb that lead to a topic here.

  i then had one of my 'friends' start having a go about how bitter everyone is here....fact he said.

  (he used to be a jw elder but left a while back, not sure why he left or if he has even researched the faith since leaving) the more i tried to reason with him that actually it is a support forum, the more he lashed out that everyone here bad mouths the jw's and only attack the jw's.

  I guess I am bitter to a certain extent, who wouldn't be bitter that they were deceived into joining a cult? But it doesn't define my life, I have moved on and have a very happy life. The thing is that we all come here to vent about our Jehovah's Witness experience, share experiences, and help each other heal. This is just a small part of my life, sometimes I don't come here for years at a time.
  
  I think the person who said we are all bitter is just still under cult mind control. Is is all just part of the lie, that all who leave are bitter, vile people, under the control of Satan. Sure there are some truly bitter people here, as there is in any group of people, including the Jehovah's Witnesses. I have known a few JWs who never had any thing nice to say about anyone, while still claiming to be one of "Jehovah's Happy People".

  Rubadubdub,That was an excellent post, I agree with everything you posted about depression, very well said. I am going to print that out and keep it handy.

  I actually had never heard of DBT, even though my daughter was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder as a teen. She is doing very well now, but I will ask her if she knows about it. She reads incessantly, so she probably does. Can you recommend a book on that?

  have you found anything from a spiritual standpoint that brings you happiness and satisfaction?.

  have you been so scarred by the teaching that "all religions are wrong", that you can't see the truth anywhere?.

  I have stayed away from all religions since I left 13 years ago, but recently I started thinking it would be nice to find a faith based community to be a part of. I have visited my husband's parents church in another area, and enjoyed it, so last Sunday my husband and I went to the local church. It's United Church of Christ (UCC). They are very welcoming, very non judgemental. The music is good too, real music, not the horrible Kingdom Melodies. It's very liberal, not politically, but that you can believe whatever you want, I don't think they even care if you are an atheist. I plan to go again this Sunday.
