  Seeking support ... Where can a Christian go

  hey all, .

  so i recently posted for the first time and introduced myself.. i have been spending time reading various posts.

  some informative, some not so much.. since i've been reading on here, i've read a lot from atheists.

  I am an atheist, but I fully support your right to believe what you want. I look at the atheist/believer debates as more of an intellectual exercise, not an attempt by atheists to convert anyone to their way of thinking. Yes, it does get heated at times and I can see where it might be hard if you have recently left or are still in the religion, because people are not a allowed to disagree. It might seem kind of out of control, or that people are being mean, but the reality is most of these people have been debating each other for years, so they actually aren't getting that upset about it. If it makes you uncomfortable, just stay out of those threads.

  What is important to me here on JWN is mutual support for those who have been harmed by the Watchtower and bringing attention the the negative aspects of the religion. I think that is something we can all agree upon.

  BT W, I was at a family gathering recently and was raked over the coals by a cousin because I admitted I was an Atheist. I didn't bring it up, she did, and I felt very uncomfortable, so it does go both ways. I wouldn't in a million years done the same to her.

  anyway , i was wondering if fb pages are actually allowed , i thought the wt frowned upon them ?

  here is one i discus in regularly , maybe take a look and leave a comment on the tripe they write , it looks very well done and presented ,https://www.facebook.com/honor.jehovah/.

  I left because I started changing and growing as a person and started to see some of the hypocrisy and lack of love in the congregations, especially as I was married to a disfellowshipped person (they practice shunning of former members). I was basically treated as somewhat tainted myself, so I was very loney. I also was in a very bad marriage that I was not allowed to leave even though he was disellowshipped (they only allow divorce on the grounds of adultery). Basically, I just could not do it anymore. My physical and mental health began to suffer and I came to the point that I just didn't see how any lovinng God could possibly want me to live like that, and if he was not a loving God, then why was I suffering for him? I left and have never been happier.

  I was still so brainwashed that I thought they were closer to what the bible taught than other religions, but I just didn't care anymore. Since then I have learned how very wrong they are on many things, and how they manipulate the scriptures to justify their beliefs and how they hide their history of doctrine changes, bad date predictions and flip flops. It's not hard to prove they are wrong to any objective person, it's just that they use mind control to keep people from questioning their belief, so it's really hard to get a believing JW to question anything.

  If your girlfriend has been a JW for forty years, then she has believed the end was close for forty years and it has not once occurred to her that they were wrong forty years ago, so it's unlikely anything you say will make any difference. I was told I would never have time for a career "in this system of things" (in the Awake magazine), I am 61, yet they still tell young people the same thing. Mostly JWs become defensive when challenged, then shut down, so that hardly ever works.

  As for apostates, JWs have been so conditioned to fear them that it is unlikely you will ever make her listen to anything we have to say. You could try the tactic that truth should stand up to scrutiny, and that if what she believes is logical and make sense then she should not be afraid of her beliefs being challenged, but don't hold your breath. I was so afraid of apostates that it wasn't until eight years after I left the religion that I came here, it took that long for the brain washing to wear off, the fear is that deeply rooted. Keep in mind that she has been attending hours of meetings brainwashing sessions for forty years.

  a couple of months ago or so i joined this forum, then shortly after checked out jwrecovery which seemed a better fit personally and joined them.

  started to feel comfortable there and they closed, and i pouted for a while.

  i was a 4th gen born in.my adult children were the 5th.

  my mother was one of the newly'anointed' we have all left.

  i have been lurking since october.i was really too terrified someone would find out who i was and what would happen.well we are out now so here is a part of my story.

  New Here ... Just woke up

  i haven't been out in service or to a meeting in over a month.. i realize now that i've been having serious questions for years and many articles and talks have greatly disturbed me over the years.

  Hello and welcome to the forum. You wrote a very nice introduction, it's wonderful to read about your spiritual journey, good for you for finding your way to the real truth. It's not always easy to see through the lies and to follow your conscience, so good for you. I agree that disfellowshipping is cruel and not justified by the scriptures.

  spiritual crisis

  two years ago i had a kundalini experience.

  i felt energy or chi pulsate through each of my chakras, from the base of the spine to the crown of the head, then back, after that i felt like a newborn for three days.

  i felt like i was reborn spiritually and god gave me a new name - indi.

  I am sorry you are going through this, my heart goes out to you. There are many things that can make you hear voices. What is important is to know is that this is something you cannot figure out by yourself. At this point you know that you cannot trust those voices, so consult a doctor and get some help. Please do that.

  a couple weeks back my husband got a phone call from his brother, whom he hasn’t spoken to in nearly 17 years.

  well i take that back, he did speak to him at the family reunion, asking him to leave.

  my husband basically told him to f off, he would leave when he’s darn good and ready, but he didn’t use the word darn.

  Go and hold your head high and don't worry about anyone else. Yes, they will be bothered, because they don't understand it when people leave the religion and and doing well, but that shouldn't be your motivation. Your motivation is that you are doing the right thing in supporting your husband, and taking the higher road and being the better person.

  obviously sparked off by the 2 afro american citizens gunned down by police officers these past few days.?.

  when is this sort of violence going to end ?.

  hy would anyone assume these criminal gunmen, who shot the cops, got these guns legally?
  Why would anyone think that, if guns were outlawed for citizens, that events like this would not happen? The Boston Bombers used a pressure cooker. Should we ban pressure cookers?

  Well, some countries are getting nuclear weapons. Should we just throw our hands up and say, Oh well, North Korea can get them, so anybody can, let's just give up, because we aren't going to win?

  An extreme example, but just following your logic. There is no reason for any private citizen to have high capacity weapons. End. Of. Story. We could have banned them years ago and greatly reduced the number now floating around, but some people don't see the difference between gun control and gun bans and fight even common sense gun legislation. As long as we have a powerful gun lobby and a congress that refuses to act, we will keep getting what we are getting. That you will never get rid of them all is a red herring, you can and will get rid of a lot of them and make them much harder to obtain.

  What is the current suicide and mental illness rate among JWs and previous members

  there seems to be no current data on this information and there is questions concerning the validation of past data.

  apparently there is high rate of mental illness and suicide.

  jehovahs witnesses suicide rate 5 to 10 times above average.

  Are the mental illnesses preexisiting? or develops within or after leaving the organization ?

  I think a little of both. I think the religion attracts people that are struggling, but I also think their teachings cause some people to suffer to a certain extent. I think if you are talking about more serious issues, like schizophrenia or bipolar, then there has to be some kind of predisposition, it's unlikely that the religion could cause it, although it might make it worse. But if you are talking depression, then it's possible they could cause it, it's a religion of guilt. I think in most cases it's a combination of both, nature and nurture.

  With my daughter I have to say I can't blame her issues entirely on the religion, she was always going to be different. But when you have a child who worries about everything, having her exposed to the concept of Armageddon on a regular basis was probably not a healthy thing. She was about seven or eight when the Yearbook about the JWs in the concentration camp came out. She obsessed about being put in a concentration camp for a year. But did that cause her issues? Who knows? Most children were obviously not affected in that way. Maybe she was the canary in the coal mine, maybe she would have turned out the same anyway. She also obsessed about growing up and having to pay taxes, she actually cried on her birthday because she had to get older and pay taxes. She's fine now btw.
