What novels have you been reading recently? Recommend any?

i've always been a bit of a reader - but only reading about topics i find interesting, e.g.

natural history, dinosaurs, etc.. recently i've started to select, buy and read novels.. this year i've bought and read frankenstein (mary shelly), dracula (bram stoker), the hound of the baskervilles (a. conan doyle), 'salem's lot (stephen king), jurassic park (michael crichton) and the firm (john grisham).. i have an inclination towards horrors and thrillers.. what fiction have you been reading?.

could you recommend anything?.

"The Stand" by Stephen King, but make sure you get the extended version. As an XJW you will thoroughly enjoy this book on a level that no other reader could enjoy and that even Mr King could not have anticipated.

I had a really weird experience with that book. This was around 1980, and I caught some really bad flu that was going around and got really sick, I was so bad I had to crawl to the bathroom to throw up. It just so happened the book was laying around and I started reading it, I was too sick to watch tv, but for some reason I could read that. I really felt like I was living the book, not just the JW thing, but that I had the same symptoms as everyone in the story. I thought for sure I was going to die but I was too sick to care. It was surreal, one of the strangest things that has ever happened to me.

The Biggest Mistake The GB Have Made In The Last 10 Years

i think the single biggest mistake the governing body have made in the last 10 years has to be creating jw broadcasting and putting their gb members on there... on a weekly basis too.. when i was a kid, i had no idea who the governing body were, what their names were or what they looked like.

there was one or two long term pioneers that knew the names of two of them but that was about it.. when i was about 10yo i imagined they looked something like this:.

ahh.... those learned men with a lifetime of bible knowledge just oozing out of their very hearts.

I agree, the worst move ever. Like you, I never knew who these people were and imagined they were deep, spiritual men. It's shocking to see the reality, just a bunch of simpletons with an inflated sense of their own worth. They have obviously had been treated like virtual gods for so long they lost perspective and simply couldn't imagine that the rank and file would not be dazzled by their brilliance.

I can only imagine what is going through the minds of current JWs as they watch the monthly dog and pony show. If I were still a JW I'd have to be asking myself some hard questions.

It's probably not the governing body, but it's probably written at their direction. I don't know how you could prove that, or why you would want to, what difference does it make?

I need to know more on why its a problem for me dating a JW girl.

ok not to throw no shade or no disrespect to the jw religion.

which i truly do respect because my girlfriend is part of but i just don't understand, i have researched so much about it.

so much about how its discouraged for her to be with me just cause of different religion.

I agree you should be able to love who you want. What you may not know is that the Jehovah's Witnesses are not a religion like any other religion. They are a cult, and controlling who you choose to marry is just one way they have of controlling you. I was a JW for 28 years, until I realized they were not what they pretended to be, so I left.

The problem is that your girl probably believes this is the one true religion and that if she doesn't do what they say she will die at Armageddon, which is happening any time now (and has been for over a hundred years). It's very hard to fight that kind of brain washing.

You are probably better off finding someone who isn't in a cult.

Coming Out To My JW Sister

now, i have been mentally "awake" for quite a while, but i'll just say march/april this year.

i won't go into detail about what it was that made me "realize" everything, so don't bother asking.. so, i've known for years that i wasn't like most girls in my classes, kingdom hall, and just in general.

from a very young age i had that obvious interest in the same sex, but seeing as i was seemingly the only one feeling that way i would brush it off and eventually i started getting interested in guys.

I am very happy for you that your sister took it so well and will not betray you, it must be a relief to be able to tell someone.

Be glad you realized that A) The religion is not "the truth" and B) you know you are a Lesbian. You are young and have your whole life in front of you and don't need to waste time in a religion you don't believe in or in relationships that would not ultimately be fulfilling.

Circuit ASSembly low-lites

so in an effort to relieve some pressure here are what i term the low-lites of yesterday's assembly that i had to endure for the sake of family still in and my progressing fade.

apologies in advance for being pretty long winded.. these may not all be the actual words used, but the ones i use are close, and they pretty well say what was said from the platform.. right off the bat in the opening prayer the praises of the governing body were spoken.

And don't make a habit of watching the news because it is Satan's world so the news will always be bad, and we might hear something that will erode our faith. (pedophiles in the org?)

Stuck

I am sorry you are feeling stuck, I am sure it's very difficult to be in this situation. I agree a slow fade is probably your best option.

It probably seems impossible at this point, but you might think about trying to get your husband to see that The Watchtower is not what it claims to be. It would not be easy, but a few people have helped family to get out. I pulled some information together on what has worked for others in this thread.

Is changing the "truth" / presenting "new light" really so bad?

playing devil's advocate here.... what's the difference between the gb changing bible interpretations compared to parliaments all over the world changing laws?

although the us constitution (=bible) remains untouched, congress passes i don't know how many new laws every year.

and of course people are expected to follow them.

This organization has a history of making thing up, claiming the bible says things it doesn't and making date predictions based on pure speculation. When these predictions fail, instead of learning from their mistakes they just make up new things that will also inevitability fail. It's a consistent pattern designed to keep people feeling the urgency of impending destruction. You can't have a doomsday cult without a doomsday looming.

1914 is a perfect example. Prior to 1914 they believed they were already in the last days and Armageddon was going to be in 1914. When that didn't happen they invented the "invisible presence of Jesus" and still said Armageddon was imminent. For years they taught that the end would come before the generation of 1914 passed away. When that became impossible to keep up anymore they made up the ridiculous "overlapping generation" doctrine. Who know how many overlaps they will get out of that before they have to come up with something new?

They are not just making innocent mistakes, and then correcting them, it's a pattern. They claim to be directed by God, people believe them and make life decisions on their made up doctrines. They never admit their past mistakes, hide their history and go on deceiving people.

Science the bible and some telling scriptures

if one reads about god creating the earth with any critical thinking you'll notice that he created vegetation and the trees before the sun.

another one that i just read about was the stories about the golden calves.

one story involves the making of a golden calf by aaron and the other is about the golden calves that were set up at bethel and i think dan.

i thought, ok the case in australia would open the eyes of the world about this dangerous cult.. well that passed without a ripple.

we talk about the un and the wt link, none jw's don't.

The reality is that very few people in the world are ever going to fall for the Watchtower flavor of crazy, most people can recognize stupid when they see it. When a religion has the lowest retention rate of any, and are growing slower than the population, they are never going to hurt that many people. Granted, even one is to many, but when you look at the number of new people recruited into the religion it really is just a tiny, tiny fraction of the earth's population. You would save more people working on global climate change or world hunger.

It's truly tragic that we can't get more out, but that is the nature of cults. You just can't save everyone, at some point there is a responsibility of each person to research the religion they are in.
