Jayhawk, I answered your question . Sorry but I just do not have time to educate you on how to know if it is literal or figurative other than a few brief statements such as look at the context, see what other scriptures say about it. For example, Revelation was given in signs. The wild beasts are not literal. What do you want me to do give you a run down from Genesis to Rev what is literal and what is figurative. Go study with JWs and learn the Bible for yourself.

Sifting thru the mountain of endless meaningless words I have found a few things worth commenting on.

Actually the Babylonians do mention their conquest of Egypt in the 37th year of Neb as I am sure you are aware. But much of the chronicle is damaged and cannot all be read. I'm sure if it was all readable you would have your evidence from the Babylonians. The fact is there is not very much evidence about Egypt at all during this period of time. I firmly believe that someday when new evidence comes forth you will all be eating crow and the Bible will once again be proven to be accurate as in the case of Belshazzar and Pilate etc.

Ok, so far we have jayhawk, dansk, fullofdoubt, hillarystep, who have honestly admitted that they would take secular evidence over Bible evidence any day. Honesty is good and I am glad to see such honesty.
Others however continue to claim the Bible is correct when it says Neb would desolate Egypt for 40 years but then turn around and say it didn't really happen because it was symbolic and/or Egypt repented and Jehovah changed his mind. I really do not believe that you believe that because there is no reason to make either claims. Pure conjecture without any backing oh except.........interpretation by the secular historians. Legions of problems of course for the 40 year desolation. Now lets ask it like this to see your true agenda:

Please don't insult our intelligence by saying Tyre is figurative so Egypt is figurative. They are not connected. Revelation is figurative so the 40 year desolation is figurative. They are not connected. I would like to see Biblical evidence from Ezekiel or another writer that gives you scriptural reasons to say that it was never fulfilled. Let me give some examples.
A scripture showing Egypt having dealings with Babylon from 588 to 548.
A prophecy where 40 years did not mean 40 years.
A prophecy about Egypt concerning things it would do from 588 to 548 that contradicts the 40 year desolation.
And so forth.
Remember, here is the catch, do not use secular evidence that you think supports the conclusion that the 40 year desolation never happened. Just use the Bible.
If you cannot then you will be showing that you place secular historians' conclusion over clear Bible evidence. You are showing that to support the secular evidence as you see it, you are willing to twist the Bible arbitrarily, with no basis for doing so just so it will fit the secular evidence that you believe happened.

Literal and figurative would be for another thread I would think. I really do not care to get sidetracked into such a discussion as it would be time consuming and probably pointless. Please look for one of JWs in your area and they will be happy to study the Bible with you so that you can get a basic understanding of it and see how to determine thru use of the Bible what is literal and what is symbolic.

Which would best describe a believer in God's word the Bible.
A. Secular historians conclude that there was no 40 year desolation of Egypt at the hands of Neb therefore what Jehovah prophecied thru Ezekiel cannot be true.
B. Jehovah prophecied thru Ezekiel that Egypt would be desolated at the hands of Neb for 40 years therefore secular historians' conclusion that no 40 year desolation of Egypt took place cannot be true.
