House bill would require clergy to report sexual abuse
The Illinois House passed a bill Thursday that would require clergy to report allegations of sexual abuse against children.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Eileen Lyons, R-Western Springs, applies to any clergyperson who, through his or her professional religious duties, has reasonable cause to suspect a child is being sexually abused. The report would have to be made to the Department of Children and Family Services.
The bill is in response to the rash of Catholic priests accused of sexually abusing minors, and their superiors in the church concealing their histories, Lyons said.
"It is aimed at those (clergy) who would be more concerned with protecting their image and protecting their own than about victims," Lyons said of the bill. "They have learned about (charges of abuse) through victims, and they cover it up."
Some lawmakers expressed concern that a provision of the bill meant to preserve the confidentiality of the Catholic sacrament of confession was too vague and open to loopholes.
The bill exempts clergy from reporting the charges if they claim the privilege of receiving the information "through confession or in their professional capacity as spiritual advisers," Lyons said.
Rep. Lou Lang, D-Skokie, said he did not understand how far "professional capacity as spiritual advisers" could be interpreted to reach.
"We definitely have the information that is disclosed within the confessional that is excluded," Lang said. "And then we have this other area as well that is a little more nebulous."
Lyons said the professional-capacity clause is only intended to exempt a disclosure made by the perpetrator of the abuse, not the victim. Lang said the bill's language makes no such distinction.
Lyons said most of the recent cases of concealed abuse allegations stemmed from victims or their families.
"These cases are reported not in the confession, not in the light of a spiritual adviser," Lyons said, "but in a reporting attitude, sometimes with a lawyer on hand.
"We can't cover everybody in this bill. It does not get everybody, but I think it does address a major problem."
Lang voted for the bill, saying: "I'm not sure it addresses the specific issue. I'm hoping that you won't let it end here and that we'll look for better language as we go forward."
"Although the bill is not quite as strong as I'd like it to be, I think it makes a clear-cut statement that clergy should be mandatory reporters," said Rep. Rosemary Mulligan, R-Des Plaines. "Many people are mandatory reporters now: teachers, doctors, social workers."
The charge of failing to report abuse is now a misdemeanor. The bill would raise second or subsequent offenses to a Class 4 felony, carrying a one- to three-year prison sentence.
House Bill 5002 passed without opposition, 114-0, and now goes to Gov. George Ryan.

To my friends, some reflections...........
by JPandelo ini have had a week to reflect on my life and was thinking about what i have seen, what i am going through, and where i am going.
i know many of you here experience unbelievable pain, suffering, anger, depression, and disbelief.
i have lived with these myself.

Hi Justin,
I have seen many leave the Watchtower and work out their anger to the detriment of time and moving on. I took a year vacation after leaving it, and went to a church, led a normal life, and no one knew I was a Witness until a nosy girl friend figured it out. :-))Become a real person who can fully interact with our Society. Enjoy family life and be creative with it. Take vacations and plan a lot of fun things to do.
In time you will feel if it is right or not to return to help others. Enjoy your life either way, and bless you!

This is posted as a web page at:
http://www.watchtowernews.org/shunnedfather.htmAppeal from Shunned Father in Canada (dated May 17, 2002)
For the past two and a half months I have been fighting the Watch Tower Society in court. They want to stop the treatments that my daughter is receiving. If they are successful, she will die. Will you please help me to save my daughter's life? In order to continue this fight to have my daughter receive the treatments she needs, I need information and financial support. At present I owe my lawyer $70,000. Below is the information I need . Would you be willing to advertise the Trust Fund? I have checked with my lawyer and he said it is ok to use my first name on a web page. Feel free to give out my email address. The WTS Lawyer told my daughter that if she died for her faith, that she would be featured in the "Awake" magazine. Isn't that sick? My daughter told the social worker that Mr. Gnam (the WTS Lawyer) and her mother were pressuring her to physically resist. Her mother tried to pull out the IV line. It is surgically implanted. If pulled out would caused her to bleed to death. There have been three different planned attempts to abduct my daughter. Anyone of which would have killed her. She has a social worker with her 24/7 to make sure that no one unduly influences her. Before the social worker was posted she was always upset, resisting treatments including chemo. Now she is much more calmer, cheerful and does not resist. A security guard is posted 24/7 to stop someone from abducting her. If you wish I can forward newspaper articles. The WTS now have gone to the Supreme Court of Canada. They have solicited help from churches and the Seventh Day Adventists are helping them. The WTS hired a PR person from another city to do damage control. This person, the HLC and the WTS Lawyers have been lying to my family, the media and the courts. I really need all the help I can get. My daughters life depends on persons helping me. Will you please help save the life of my daughter? Will you post this information on your web site?
The following information can maybe save my daughter's life and force the WTS to pay my legal bills. This proof can come from copies of actual documents or sworn statements from individuals who have personal experience or knowledge of such matters. Anyone's costs in providing a notarized statement or appearing in court would be taken care of.
1) . Proof that direction to the JW lawyers comes from the WTS.
2) . That written or verbal protocol or standing orders initiate from the WTS to their lawyers or HLC.
3) . That there are internal policies to intervene in custody and HLC cases.
4) . Reasons why they do it.( example: to stop members from taking an alternate view, to prevent members from leaving etc)
5) . Litigation support for WTS lawyers such as secretaries, paper, supplies, equipment, does it come from the WTS ?
6) . Does the alternative treatment and medical advice come from the WTS?
A trust fund has been set up by two fellow employees to help defray the cost of legal fees to allow me to continue to have legal representation. I do not have any access to this fund. Feel free to contact Randy Exner (my boss) or Maggie Branton at (403)262-5511 to verify this. She also is a notary. The legal fees will roughly total $150,000. Any monies left over are to be donated to the Alberta's Childrens Hospital. Cheques should be made out to " SAVE MY DAUGHTER" and mailed to " SHUNNED FATHER, Box 20161, Calgary Place R.P.O., Calgary Alberta T2P 4J2 Any letters or cards of encouragement would be very much appreciated. Please forward this information to whomever you can. Thank you very much. Lawrence

My Experience Today with My Brother
by Reborn2002 inwell, my brother and his wife came over to my parent's house to visit today while i was home.. to make a long story short, while my brother and his wife were chatting with my mother in the living room, my 1 and a half year old nephew reilly walked into the kitchen where i was making a caesar salad.. he walked over towards me and was smiling, how can any normal adult resist the innocent smile of a child who is your relative?
i picked him up and gave him a huge hug, and told him i loved him.. as i was holding my nephew in my arms, my brother walked into the room.
he was smack dab in the middle of an in-depth conversation about jehovah with my mother and his wife, and i admit i was rolling my eyes listening to him spew about the "truth" and "the only means for salvation in the last days of this wicked system" even though when i confronted him with info on the un, blood, russell gravesite, rape changes, exclusivity, etc, he had no response for me because he was dumbfounded and lost for words.
