is it because we're a cynical lot?.

maybe because we were the first generation of latch-key kids who learned how to raise ourselves?.

How much can I say w/out revealing too much. Well I'm a GenXr. I work(ed) hard in the org because I always thought I was doing the right thing. Thought everything was good in my JW world. I was MS & then elder at relatively young age. I went to college and aux pio and work fulltime. I tried to do everything and do it well. Needless to say I'm no longer attending college or aux pio. I'm tired and disappointed. Hoping for better days ahead and just wondering how to get there. I talk to others in my age group and many of them feel the same way. Thankfully a number of them are not putting off college, savings, etc. I don't know if GenXrs will be the end but maybe a different breed of JW as has been stated on other discussions.

Watchtower says Dos and Don'ts are out

among the latest instructions to the rank and file witnesses is this one:.

"following bible principles, we will avoid trying to live (or demand others to live) by an extensive and rigid set of dos and don'ts that go beyond the teachings of the bible.

" (the watchtower - issue of april 15,2002, page 22, para 15).

In the past WTS has printed that there is no room for human standards, personal ideas imposed on others, yada yada yada. But for some reason this doesn't seem ever be applied. Elders still get on the platform or call somebody into the backroom and express their opinion. If one has a differing opinion they feel as if that person is not a "spiritual man".

I agree w/you Ozzie, I would like to see all of the unwritten rules go out the door. I think the bros & sis would appreciate it as well. It seems as if they (we) are all simply tired and weighed down. Something has got to give!

Body piercing?

ok.... question - what is wrong with body piercing?

i personally feel it is a method of self expression.

i mean, i would never go and get everthing possible pierced, but i do have 2 holes in each ear, and a newly acquired belly ring.. i got my belly done 3 weeks ago, on spring break.

In my cong & a few others in the circuit, a few of the sisters have multiple piercings in the ears. A couple of times a year when we meet as an elder body the subject comes up & it usually gets mentioned in a local needs part about dress & grooming. There was a YPA article a year or two ago that basically said the decision should be left up to the individual & his/her parents. But most JWs in this area still raise an eyebrow. Personally I see nothing wrong with piercings.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. I'll be hanging around here, I hope to post more and not just look.

Ranchette- I appreciate what you wrote. At the moment my wife is very much pro-JW. In the past I've tried the hard core approach, with the things I learned about our religion. Now I understand that I need to use more tact and subtlety. I'm trying. I know that many were/are hurt by the things elders say and do, I've tried to balance my elder body by being as "liberal" as possible and take up for the friends when and where I can. I'm not trying to be anybody's Knight in Shining Armor, I just think the elders, COs, DOs, etc can be a bit more reasonable. Perhaps I'm being naive.
Farkel- you are absolutely correct about making a difference. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there that benefit from this 'net thang!

thanks for looking out slipnslide. As I said earlier, I've lurked for a couple of years. I knew I would get these type of questions when I posted.

Orange- My comment about the dark side was written in jest, I was trying to calm my nerves. When I first began lurking on the old H2O board & Freeminds, I felt as if I was doing something wrong. Since then I've learned a lot. Eventually I'll come to a point where I can step aside & leave all of this, but not right now. My immediate family is still in and very active. I just can't lose them right now. I want others to be completely informed about the WT, that is why I asked Simon to post the letter. Maybe in some small way I'm hoping for reform or something drastic to happen that will cause the majority of r&f to leave. And as my tag name says I want to do my part however small.

yes the letter is real. I scanned it as a pdf file so it could not be altered. Of course I cannot send you the originals. Perhaps some others serving as elders can post and authenticate the letter.

I am just an elder in the local cong. I'm the Congregation Secretary and WT Conductor. I'm a second gen JW; wife, kids, and other family are JW's. I'll continue to serve as long as I can be helpful to the "Dark Side" :) I have plenty of BOE letters, I'll release what I can on occasion. I just want to be careful in what I tell about myself.

Thanks Biggs & Larc on the welcome. I should have given more information on the letter. It summarizes the KM School meetings we had last year, as well as a few updates. I apologize for not stating this earlier, as I said I'm a bit nervous. It's strange to see my words appearing here. Hopefully the letter will be available soon.
