this thread is inspired by a comment made on another thread, but i thought it would make an interesting discussion.. self deceit is described as a "misconception that is favorable to the person who holds it".
my premise is that faith is a form of self-deceit - lying to oneself.. so, i would ask of the "faithful" the following questions and would request that they be read carefully to ensure no that there is no misunderstanding of purpose.. 1) in what way is faith not self-deception?.
2) is a person who has faith in a god that you do not believe in, say for example siva, practicing a form of self-deception?.

a pivotal question for those who believe the bible.
jehovah's witnesses and many other religions believe jesus is the "seed" of the "woman" spoken of in genesis 3:15. in addition, the jehovah's witnesses believe this "woman" pictures the heavenly organization (angels) that produced jesus.
given that premise, i pose this question:.
Leo, you could publish a bible commentary book. Seriously.
Though I wouldn't mention anything about not believing in it...
might hurt sales a bit...
: )
we just had a horrible episode in our back yard.
as most of you know i have two warlock dobermans.
they are very large and powerful.
Sorry to hear about your dog being attacked by a Pit as well.
Basically, I really like pit-mixes of less than like 25 or so percent. That breed is usually very upbeat, playful/youthful and loyal. But when you start getting into the pure breeds, you really have a dangerous animal often on your hands. I have seen so many out here in Hawaii that wanted to attack any and everything that walked by.
They are not good with other dogs at all. They are usually great with known family, but even there can be unpredictable at times. Though the same can be said of other aggressive breeds such as Dobermans, Rotts etc.
But because they are so massive and built for fighting (with huge heads), even a small supposed skirmish can be bad news for whatever happens to be on the other side.
I just think the pure breds are bad news overall. But I also would add that my last all time fav dog was perhaps close to half pit. He was everything I described above in a positive way.
And our third dog (actually my son's, but lives most of the time with me) is also mixed with pit and is my fav of the three. Just soooo much fun and enthusiasm! You gotta love that.

Hilary says:..."The concept of god is not a misconception.
The bible may not be from God. I have always stated that is a possibility. But there are also powerful reasons to believe it could be. For those that do believe, I respect their reasons for such beliefs and would certainly not label them as self-deceived.
But you see, that was not your initial question. You asked:
1- "In what way is faith not self-deception?"
and
2) "Is a person who has faith in a God that you do not believe in, say for example Siva, practicing a form of self-deception?"

Here you go Hilary, let's take YOUR OWN WORDS, FROM YOUR OWN OPENING POST:
noun "the action or practice of allowing oneself to believe that a false or unvalidated feeling, idea, or situation is true : Jane remarked on men's capacity for self-deception."

I have a four year old Dobie female. Probably 85 lbs. My wife was walking her about two months ago with our Border Collie (about 55 lbs). The neighbor has a full blooded pit bull, that is half the height of our Doberman, but literally weighs perhaps 20 pounds more. Looks like a mini-tank. Seriously.
Anyway, the Pit got out of her cage (their kid forgot to latch it), jumped the short fence and mowed down our big Doberman. Was on top of her in a matter of seconds.
Sounds like you have some good dogs.

Hilary has questions.
You would have to consider JUST WHY the JW's refuse to consider examining critical information which challenge those beliefs. And since most of us were JW's, we are quite familiar with just WHY most JW's will not even consider critical examinations; BECAUSE THEY ARE TOLD NOT TO.
greetings, friends:.
i recently put up a thread entitled "when can i comment?
" new to the thought process of critical thinking, i have felt overwhelmed by the wealth of information now available to a mind opened up to society-banned material.
