  Front page of the newspaper. Thank goodness it is finally brought to light. A former JW who was abused by her father became an attorney and is now making the matter public. All the typical signs are there--Elders not protecting their sheep--parents in denial and not admitting that anything was wrong. They tried to contact the presiding overseer and other elders with no response. I didn't know this was a front page feature in the local paper until my sister's ex boyfriend came over to say hello yesterday. Very sad that this happened but very glad this young lady decided to take this route She wants to talk about it but..The elders don't --the parents don't --other witnesses here don't. So obvious but tragic.

  Specific banned shows, songs, etc...?

  i know the society tells people not to listen to rock n roll cause its from teh satan, not to watch r rated movies because they're "worldly", etc.

  but i was wondering if folks had any specific instances where one song, one show, one movie, or whatever was singled out as being particularly 'evil', and banned on an individual basis?

  i was never a jw, but was in the worldwide church of god...the two are rather similar, i've seen many (and made quite a few myself) comparisons on the board; and i can remember as a child that every once in a while certain things would get brought up as being more evil and worldly than others.. examples of specific bans:.

  The Elders at my wedding reception VERY quickly informed the DJ to turn off Chubby Checker's "The Twist"----I guess they claimed it had roots in an ancient African pagan fertility dance.

  I wasn't raised a witness. All I could do was laugh and think "uhh--maybe the song is a simple song about 'twisting' your body. LOL

  'I love you'

  yesterday, i came to the realisation, that nobody has ever said these words to me, least not that i can remember, which was a temporarily devastating moment for me.

  this began with my father.

  spotting him in front of the tv in his favourite chair, i walked over and came out with the words 'i love you' it felt very weird, because i think it may be the first time i've ever said these words myself, but i'm going to blame my upbringing on this.

  Crazy dynamic--I became inactive 8 years ago--not one witness ever called to say i was missed -- or that they loved me.I have since been with my girlfriend and her buddies--they have no reservations about telling me they love me. Quite an eye-opener.

  Those car groups with the CO were hilariously ridiculous. Some bro who hadn't made a meeting or service in mos. would chime from the back of a van with 8 people and declare -" 'Bro. C.O.'-------I feel that that last door I was at could have been better had I used p. 19 of the reasoning book"----and on an on ----all the other dingalings would chime in with 'encouraging thoughts as well". This would go on for the whole trip in service---and since I was a M.S.--I was later counseled for not wearing a jacket (100 degree weather)--and was scolded for taking off my tie to eat at break. I thought I would be pelted with stones when we took our break and were eating pizza-----No one would loosen up---I looked at the C.O. and said---"Ya Know Bro. C.O.?----------nothing is better than a good pizza and good beer"-------------the STARES and SILENCE were classic---------I didn't feel out of place at all---------The C.O. looks at me with a smile and replied---"I know exactly what you mean" ---He was a cool C.O. ---- of course I was soon removed but------There Ya Have It.
