what is it makes some of those wacky apostates appear from time to time claiming russell and the witnesses were/are all part of some great freemason/illuminati plot?
i'll tell you what it is, and it may explain a few other things for you too!
people who come up with these theories demonstrate a basic psychological insecurity stemming from their involvement and subsequent disentanglement from the witnesses.

i have been hearing about a secret socioty called the illuminati.
i started seeing some connections on my own between illuminati and what i heard when i was at the meetings when i was younger.
holy shite they are directly connected.
Personally, I have no great interest in numerology, yet accept at the same time that there is ' truth ' within the ' fact ' that fraternities use numbers as a means of empowerment, as well as arcane symbols. I also believe that symbols & numbers link into the immateria/astral plain (where lower & higher spirit creatures dwell) and this plain through gateways etched and developed by the careful focusing of human will, influence affairs upon the earth. This is where sacred geometry plays its part. Afterall, God is math, and also our word is a means to an end.
The Illuminati in my considered opinion exists nowadays as a ' concept ' or ' ideology ' which we who study such matters use to describe the overriding philosophy of secret orders, like Skull & Bones and the international Free Masons (amongst others).
Where as in the 18th century, this group certainly was created and helped kick start a new order of powerful individuals who shared similar goals of global domination for what they would have considered the greater good and we would generally consider as enslavement to an olagarchy.

Ascetics down through ages have been obsessed with conquering the carnal instincts of man and see a clear divide between flesh & spirit. Flesh involving the so-called 'lower' instincts of man and spirit being the higher aspirations. A battle between these two opposing forces takes place daily within us, according to this philosophy.
To a degree, upon self-examination, I can see how this idea arose and there appears to be an element of truth there.
No doubt, masturbation when practised ritualistically or obsessively may lead to an imbalance within the mind and emotions, but occasional practise, I'm sure, does no lasting harm.
The key as always, appears to be balance.

The information drawn from the texts credited to Josephus concerning Jesus seem very suspicious to me.

He drew many after him BOTH OF THE JEWS AND THE GENTILES. HE WAS THE CHRIST. When Pilate, at the suggestion of the principal men among us, had condemned him to the cross, those that loved him at the first did not forsake him, FOR HE APPEARED TO THEM ALIVE AGAIN THE THIRD DAY, AS THE DIVINE PROPHETS HAD FORETOLD THESE AND THEN THOUSAND OTHER WONDERFUL THINGS ABOUT HIM, and the tribe of Christians, so named from him, are not extinct at this day (Antiquities 18:63-64).
Doesn't it seem a little odd that Josephus would then go about his business and remain within his own faith and ignore this wise man who he proclaims to be "the Christ" and not dedicate a few chapters to the subject? Surely this would warrant an investigation, especially as Josephus appeared to be a prolific writer and 'a thinker'.
Why Christians use this passage is beyond me, it seems like a clear case of falsifying the records.
