The German reference NWT of 1986, as has been noted before, has a more recent footnote apparatus than the English one of 1984, but, as far as I know, the main text remains that of the 1984 revision. In 2006, they produced the paperback _editions_.

Do you have to get baptized to be saved?
by JH in1 peter 3:21.
21that which corresponds to this is also now saving you, namely, baptism, (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the request made to god for a good conscience,) through the resurrection of jesus christ.. the witnesses say that you have to get baptized to be saved, but what will happen to jw children that aren't baptized or jw teens that didn't get baptized yet?.

Auld Soul: "since those who are dead have no sin any longer—their accounts sheet is perfectly balanced, their life has paid their sins." While this is the JW teaching, isn't the usual interpretation that the wage sin pays is _spiritual_ death, death to God? This is how Christians explain the mysterious fact that even though people have been saved they die physically. I do not think our life per se is enough, according to traditional Chrisitianity, to pay for our sins. That's why we need the value of Jesus' life. (I still can't seem to format. Sorry.)

How do you make a link to another webpage active on a post so that people can just click it and go? Every time I post something the formating gets lost when I submit. All my paragraph divisions get lost, etc. How do I avoid this happening? How do I quote part of what someone else posts in order to respond to it?

Harry Potter got me in so much trouble as a Witness. I could not believe how worked up some people got over that story. I was a MS, but, when some people heard I liked Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, they marked me as someone who could be a spiritual danger. I was constantly having to defend the innocence of the human imagination. But that's rather hard to do when the people you're talking to think it's dangerous to go to yard sales because the demons like to attach themselves to old furniture.

What do you mean by "saved" through baptism? Do you mean we have original sin (whatever that means) due to the actions of others (Adam and Eve) and that through faith (whatever that means) in the action of another being (Jesus/God, being sacrificed/sacrificing) and perhaps in various other doctrines (let's hope the accidental and arbitrary events of life have conspired to make you aware of and convinced by the right ones) followed by baptism (getting splashed with or immersed in some water) the sin is forgiven (whatever that means)? I'm afraid I have trouble with the whole system.

Asherah, the wife of YHWH
by veradico inas we all know, the bible tends to overlook and often look down on women.
the priests and scribes who were in charge of it did everything they could to emphasize the maleness of god, thus supporting the social organization in place.
however, we can also detect in their writings the obvious fact that most of the people and many of the nobles of israel liked to turn to goddesses like asherah, who they could expect to be more sympathetic and compassionate than yhwh, and that the jewish people, in their legendary past, had other gods and goddesses (think of rachel's teraphim, get a bible commentary that talks about how the ot interacts with near eastern myths in attempting to have yhwh absorb the characteristics and titles of other gods and goddesses, note the lateness of even the prophetic condemnation of asherah compared to the early condemnation of ba'al worship).

This is also confirmed by the archeological evidence that has been uncovered in recent years. Anyone interested can google the subject, the details of which I don't feel like going into further here. I can't help but wonder what the history of western civilization would have been like if the priests and scribes and prophets had not been successful in stamping out the common people's more ballanced conception of God. I suspect that the desires like deadening the body, dominating others, and scorning nature would have been condemned, not glorified. What would the world be like if instead of the nation of Israel being the submissive wife of Jehovah, he were married to Asherah?

I have not watched the DVD yet, but I just watched the clip on YouTube. It seems reasonably fair. Jehovah's Witnesses have their, shall we say, regretable aspects, but the religion has accomplished some good for humanity as a whole while pursuing its selfish interests. Rutherford's inability to tolerate the absolute claims of Nazism (since they conflicted with the absolute claims of his Theocracy), the Witnesses' court cases involving freedom of religion and speech (even though Witnesses really only want freedom for their religion and their words, certainly not those of heterodox or former members), and the Witnesses' willingness to be guinea pigs in bloodless surgery (due to concern for their righteous standing before Jehovah and the congregation, not due to an altruisitc desire to aid science and humanity) are all examples of this. I prefer Jehovah's Witnesses to the Evangelical Fundamentalists who would unite Church and State and who desire a Theocracy as much as Rutherford did but are willing to engage passionately in the political process to achieve their goals. Jehovah's Witnesses just aren't as emotional as the other fundamentalist groups. Watch Jesus Camp, and compare it to our experiences as Witnesses. We were indoctrinated by the hypnotic repetition of specious arguments; they are indoctrinated by emotional highs and lows. An acute sense of sin is replaced by the ecstasy of salvation--over and over agian. With this as the percussive background, the leaders elaborate their themes (i.e. the sins of abortion, homosexualtiy, evolution, even attempts to stop global warming, etc.). Both, in the final analysis, are irrational systems, but Witnesses at least pretend to be rational and only resort to the authority of the Faithful Slave when the questions get too hard.

Is the Watchtower really this decietful? Say it aint so. Really?
by icocer ini found this page that list what they believe are their top 10 deceptive quotes in the "should you believe in the trinity" booklet.
the site is trinitarian.
my itention is not to prove or disporve the trinity, it is to find out if the watchtower is really this decietful.

The people who write for the Watchtower are certainly not scholars. They hold such a radically anti-intellectual and anti-education position that it's a wonder they are able to write at all. It comes as not surprise that their use of quotes is often immature. They find sound bites that seem to say what they want, and they don't concern themselves with the author's actual intent. I think they are used to the fact that just about anyone they quote will be someone who ultimately disagrees with them on at least some major point. This will be the case whether the person they quote is a spiritualist like Johannes Greber, a "higher critic," a scientist who (among other things) believes in evolution, or just about any other sane person on this planet. Their use of the so called J-texts in the NWT is another good example of their confused idea concerning what citations are for and of their selective and sloppy methodology.
