Can you be a JW in good standing and NOT go door to door?
by Terry inthe 2nd president of the watchtower bible and tract society, j.f.rutherford was criticised by some elders in the (then) independant congregations for urging members to go door to door while neglecting to do so himself.
rutherford responded:.
frequently some elder says: the president of the society does not go from house to house selling books.

." The parents should encourage
their children to do this very thing, if they would have
them live. The Watchtower, 1941, p. 287
Anybody is up for exploitation by the power and money hungry WTS.

Motives for starting the lie of Watchtower Authority.
by marriedtoajw ini have yet to come across anyones opinions, jw or not, of the personal motives of the leaders of the org.
to perpetuate what i guess we all would call the lie of the watchtoer authority.
in my opinion, i think that russell was an athiest out to show how easy it is to decieve people using the bible.

Once the WTS. and its apparent leaders self identified themselves as god's chosen organization the cat
was out of the bag and let lose to wander wherever it wanted to go.
The power of god was theirs now removed from all religious organizations and just like any other organized
structures of power, they wanted more. A small portion of the general public gave it to them and the rest is history.

God: The Abusive Boyfriend
by baltar447 inhttp://conversationalatheist.com/general-essays/god-the-abusive-boyfriend/.
ways the christian god is like the most extreme version of an abusive (and possibly psychotic) boyfriend:needs constant praise and makes you feel guilty for just being human.has severe jealousy issues.he lets painful experiences happen to you that he could easily prevent, just to test your devotion to him.claims credit for everything good in your life; claims nothing bad in your life comes from him.threatens you with eternal torture if you ever leave him.he is constantly swearing that he loves you and you need him.
(thanks richard collins).ways to tell if you are in danger of being taken advantage of in a relationship with this abusive god:you are highly defensive of him from even the slightest criticism of his flaws.you talk to him every night, and he never responds yet still expects unwavering devotion.

Good catch Baltar
It was particularly for this and the reason that I was suppose to belong and be subservient to a corrupt bullshitting
publishing house (WTS.) to be in his good favor, which probably turned me into a atheist/humanist.

Do you miss "dressing up" for the meetings?
by dozy ini was thinking about this the other day when doing a bit of tidying up of my wardrobe.
all the kh suits are now pushed to the back of the wardrobe and i am seriously thinking about a visit to the charity shop to get rid of most of them.. for me one of the (few) enjoyable aspects of being a jw was getting dressed up.
my secular work very rarely involves putting on a dress suit & tie so i miss getting dressed up - smart suit , tie , shiny shoes , slapping on the aftershave.

Do you miss "dressing up" for the meetings?
Absolutely not, wearing a tie for most men is just uncomfortable and most suits can be uncomfortable to wear as well.
Particularly so in the summer when things get hot.
The question of apparel was always a big thing in Kingdom Halls.
The WTS. wanted their own sales representatives looking their best always, presenting an image for the public to see and observe.
To the way you groomed your hair even to the colors of your cloths.
And god doesn't like woman to wear pant suits. This is detestable and disgusting in god's eyes.
And he doesn't like men to wear beards even though that was his own creation for men.

Terry's point about Rutherford is notable for he was more consumed in supporting his publishing organization
spending time writing articles for his books and organizing the operations of the WTS.
After all of that he had leave some time open for boozing, womanizing and driving around in his Cadillacs.

To simplify an answer to Terry's original question yes, particularly for the elderly and infirmed.
I knew of some very elderly people who didn't go out in service or give talks because of there
health but were still loved and respected by the rest of the congregation.
They did answer at meetings which was about all they could do.
But to the healthy and young the constant scrutiny of supporting zealousness shown by service, talks,
parts in assembly programs and otherwise is always a paramount observation within the organization.
The adjoining bragging of ones supporting zealousness was also a means to support an individuals good
standing in the congregation.

Rutherford was self a made business man of sorts and lived the life of a prosperous one at that.
The WTS publishing company was his business to use and exploit after clutching it away from others.
He most likely was aware of the wealth contained in the WTS. for Russell had used him for legal purposes in handling the WTS. business affairs.
He was also a man that was more devoted to himself, writing and publishing literature that postured himself up as a
great public savior. The power of the press or the written word, was his vehicle of exploitation and he used it proficiently as possible.
Was the WTS's own doctrines developed to proliferate the circulation of literature and to lure people toward the organization so they
may be used and exploited to circulate the WTS's literature ? ...... of course !

What motivates the men setting themselves up to the very top of this organization ?
Answer = power, prestige, personal adulation, an increase in ones own perceived self image, even security.
When you consider the age of the men being placed as a member of the GB.
There's life time security there until you die and the WTS. will cover all of your medical costs to boot.
I'd say there's motivation there.
