I sort of view my release from the WTS as my ancestors must have felt upon arriving in the US and starting a new life free from religious enslavement. They looked ahead at the future with hope. Yes, they had to start from scratch, but that was okay, they were building new foundations for themselves and their prodigy. It's gotta start somewhere, why not with me?

Making you own traditions in the Holiday season.
by free2beme inmost of the time, a tradition is something that is passed on to you, from the way you were raised and the traditions your parents taught you.
some, can be as simple as reading, "the night before christmas" on christmas eve night or as complex as making sure to eat certain items in your christmas meal, following a recipe passed down from generation to generation.
where does one find tradition, from a family that spent the christmas holiday going to meetings, or sitting around watching television?

Your post was beautiful! This is my first year celebrating the holidays with my young children. My husband is still an active JW, so things are a little difficult right now, but I am managing to create traditions with the girls. We had a great Thanksgiving and started a "Thanks" box. Every year we will write on an index card the things we are most thankful for that year. I know it will be wonderful for the girls to look back on when they have their own children. We also decorated the tree on Thanksgiving and I put a little gingerbread house snow globe ornament on the tree. When ever the girls feel the desire, they can go up to the globe turn it over and make a wish at the same time. They can wish for whatever the want and some of the wishes just may come true. Oh course, I'm often listening in, so I know what they want from Santa and I also know a couple other little things that they really feel are important. Because my husband it still in and I want to create traditions with him too, I've set up a trip to a lake house for Christmas eve and Christmas day. The girls and I will have our Christmas day the 26th, but we will have a special memory with daddy too.

Thank you, this is exactly why I will never believe that they Bible is from the creator of the universe. This is why the Bible holds no more weight to me then any other piece of literature from various eras in history. If you can't see how screwed up this view is, then something is seriously wrong with your common sense meter.

However, I know he will have a fit when he finds out I have a tree. I seem to remember a WT article that mentioned that if there is an unbelieving mate who puts up a tree it should be tolerated. Any one remember?
TIA!

Hypocrisy on holidays, etc.
by Rebirth ini was just thinking about how hypocritical it is for jw's to declare things like birthdays, christmas, easter, thanksgiving, etc.
as defiled because of their roots.
their roots, their beginning, in the days of russell, are the things that they find disgusting today (the cross, birthdays, blood, etc.).

oh yeah, can't forgot that OTWO. I was thinking of using this line of reasoning next time of husband says something to me or the girls about celebrating the holidays. Think that would be wise?

Their roots, their beginning, in the days of Russell, are the things that they find disgusting today (the cross, birthdays, blood, etc.). Do they throw out their religion because of it's unsavory foundation?
Why can't we celebrate the joys of modern-day Christmas: giving gifts, being with family (not the pagan roots of various icons). Thanksgiving: gratitude and family (and not the massacre of indians).
They say that they've evolved, that their light as brighter, yet they still celebrate their beginnings. Well, I"m here to say that it is hypocritical to call Christmas, etc. wrong because of its beginnings when such events have evolved into something very different.
Can I hear an AMEN??
p.s. excuse my typos, don't have time to proof read this afternoon.
