  I have to disagree with you on the Bible statement you made. It has been my experience that you were looked down on at the Kingdom Hall if you didn't always have a Bible sitting on your lap, looking up every scripture that was quoted from the podium. Of course, that's not to say that they didn't always put their own slant on the scripture.

  I bet one big difference though, between the witnesses here compared to the witnesses there is the amount of materialism here. I saw so many witnesses with big extravagant houses, expensive cars, always name brand clothes, the women's faces painted up with lots of makeup, big huge diamond rings on their fingers. I even had an acquantance mention to me that the PO's wife who used to study with her seemed very "adorned", and wasn't that wrong? Evidently she missed that scripture.

  Which major country of JW"s will fall first?

  there has been major declines in european countries.. will one of these be the first to have a catastrophic decline.. i predict britian and france falling quickly maybe under 100,000 in a year or two.. when one country fall significantly say britian going under 100,000 will this set off bigger falls here and else where when people start to jump the sinking ship?

  You hit the nail on the head. That's why when people like me start questioning the validity of the organization our Mother tells us that it is Satan trying to influence our thinking. Which in turn makes us question whether Satan really is influencing our thinking. Which in turn makes us really screwed up in the head. Thanks WTBS!!! :)

  gambler brought up an interesting point earlier re an english couple getting snotty because someone asked them if they were from australia.. it's a fact that guessing at someones accent is a risky business, especially if you get it wrong.

  i had a canadian friend who was always being mistaken for an american, and boy did he ever get pissy about it.. same with new zealanders, i don't mix 'em up with aussie's because i have kiwi pals and am tuned into to the softer intonations.

  my wife has a swiss friend who hates being mistaken for being from germany or austria and makes no bones about letting you know it.. i used to laugh at what i considered to be over-sensitivity, until someone suggested that i came from yorkshire.

  I enjoyed your post. I agree that it is risky business asking "are you .....?

  I had a funny experience recently talking to another Englishman. I was at my husbands class renunion. One of his classmates had brought an Englishman that she was dating. After having a few to drink I started up a conversataion with him. I've always prided myself on being able to imitate other people's accents, so I started talking in my "English accent." He proceeded to tell me that my English accent was "crap". I admired his honesty :). Will I imitate anyone else's accent? Depends on how much I've had to drink! :)

  About stumbling

  how many of you were ever "stumbled" as a jw?

  i always thought that claiming you were "stumbled" was just an excuse to stop going to meetings etc.

  I can't even count the number of times that I "should" have been stumbled. Of course I was programmed so well, I would NEVER be so "weak" as to allow a fellow servant of Jehovah to cause me not to return to the KH.

  Let's see.........There was the MS who would come and have lunch with me at my work (I worked for his Father-in-law). I knew he was coming to see me because he would stay and eat with me even if his Father-in-law wasn't there. And when I decided to change jobs he called me and told me that I was making a bad decision. And then when my husband confronted him about it he quoted Proverbs 14:17 about him being foolish for being quick to anger.

  Then there was the time after my husband wasn't going to meetings anymore and I was struggling with two kids by myself a MS came up to me during the halftime song and in front of everyone sitting around me asked me if I could keep my daughter more quiet during the meeting. She was probably 5 at the time and IMO she wasn't being noisy at all. But because there were no kids in the hall at the time any noise my kids made seemed loud.

  One time I was having a home interiors party and i was handing out invitations at the KH. I was young and naive. And an elders wife told me I wasn't supposed to be doing that. How silly.....I could go on and on.

  Basically I always felt like there were all these rules and regulations that I couldn't keep track of and every time I turned around I was breaking a rule and getting in trouble. I can't tell you how free I feel now that I don't have to worry about all of their silly rules. But I know most of you already know how I feel. :)

  I would quote what you said but I haven't figured that one outyet. :) But I just wanted you to know that I admired the fact that you still attend meetings in support of your wife. My husband did the same thing for me up until recently when I too quit going. But the fact that he would do that for me made our relationship that much stronger.

  I am new to this forum. I've only just decided to leave the so called "truth". I've been lurking for a bit. This is the first discussion that I felt I could contribute to.

  My husband, who has been "inactive" for a few years grew a beard while still active. The beginning of the end I suppose. He was told that they couldn't stop him from having one but he would not be "used" in the congregation. Even though every "artist's rendition" showed Jesus with a beard.

  I would also like to add that one congregation that we were in you could not give a talk in the "school" if you wore cowboy boots or if you wore a sports coat and slacks instead of a suit. How silly is that? Just one of many things that made me feel that the elders and the powers that be in the organization were just like the scribes and pharisees that chastised Jesus for curing sick people on the sabbath.
