Largest amount of refugees since WW2 in Europe
by Powermetal4ever inso i had a discussion with my mother about this, and she claims that because of this that: "we are surely living in the last days right now" while i must admit myself that the situation seem chaotic, i don't want to believe that it is the last days.
so question is, how do i face an opinion like that?

Professor Rosling has many videos where he shows through statistical means that things are getting better. Taking a few minutes and listening to what he has to say is definitely food for thought. -

Large flows of immigrants from various poorer war torn regions is to be expected from time to time in the 21'st century. World overpopulation and all the crisis that humanity faces is nothing like the gloom and doom prophesied by end times Armageddon spewing cults like the witnesses. If you get a chance listen to what a real scientist and statistician has to say. One that makes a compelling case is Prof Hans Rosling.

A Judicial experience.
by John Aquila inwhen i was an elder in the 80s, a 16 year old baptized jw girl had confessed that at school during lunch a boy kissed her and touched her privates over her dress.
the circuit overseer was in town and we told him of the situation and he called the society and then told us that mother said we were not allowed to conduct the funeral in the kingdom hall or anywhere else with the threat of removing us and being dealt with judicially if we disobeyed.
the mother who is about 79 years old comes once a year to talk to my mom about the situation.

John AquilaThen on my last day I would feel that I accomplish something good in this life. Instead all I can say is “I was a Jehovah Witness for 40 of my best years.”
It's a sad legacy indeed but at least you're aware of it now. To borrow a colloquialism from Christendom that's your cross to bear. Many of the ignorant or lucky ones depending on ones perspective never see the harm caused by this cult.
As long as there is breath in your body there is still time to change and do good. Stay positive.

VA shooting suspect was raised a JW! He mentions it on his Twitter account
by WingCommander inanyone in the usa following this morning's shooting "on-air" live tv will know what i'm talking about.
bryce williams (not real name, but on-air name) shot and killed 2 people on live television this morning in roanoke, va. he was wearing a go-pro camera, and uploaded his first-person video onto his social media accounts.
i've seen his twitter feed (before it was taken down), and not very far down he mentions being raised a jw.

Secret Slave Class: I don't watch the news. They all have an agenda.
I know the feeling I agree they do all seem to have an agenda.
I am just the opposite in my consumption of the news. I listen to and watch some of the conservative news I also listen to and watch some of the more progressive news media sources. It's true they all have an agenda but I have a little fun trying to figure out what they are reporting and why.
The news media that is the most difficult for me to wrap my head around is the financial news media. If they report that its daylight out and your watch tells you its lunch time you still should check two or three other sources before eating. LOL

WHEN people leave a cult...MAN landed on the moon? Or critical thinking......
by The Rebel ini believe anyone who has voluntarily left a cult has shown they can adapt to new solutions, and have used " critical thinking" skills otherwise most would not have left.. yet i believe a safe place for support is still needed and this safe place i believe is searched for.. now i may not measure up to much in ways of education, but for me personally " critical thinking skills" = " new" a " new" way of thinking, that takes time for me the individual to be visual and to contemplate.
and the more i read about " critical thinking," the more convinced i am that i can live with the ridicule of those that claim i do not possess it.
furthermore i would say those that criticise others " critical thinking skills," often luck the sensibility and thoughts to snore, spit, and fart....nor would they understand a room full of tobacco smoke and cheap booze...where " critical thinking " can often be found in its most profound, in the most sensitive poems and "pictures" that were ever drawn.

Orphan Crow: Leaving the cult is often an emotional choice and has little to do with the concept of critical thinking.
Critical thinking skills do not (and should not) require an emotional involvement.
I couldn't agree more, the farther one can remove emotion from thinking the more critical the thought process becomes.
Vivianne makes a good point also about not being offended by criticisms of ones lack of critical thinking.
As humans we are all prone to occasional emotions and pride affecting our thought processes.
