but i was wondering if folks had any specific instances where one song, one show, one movie, or whatever was singled out as being particularly 'evil', and banned on an individual basis?

i was never a jw, but was in the worldwide church of god...the two are rather similar, i've seen many (and made quite a few myself) comparisons on the board; and i can remember as a child that every once in a while certain things would get brought up as being more evil and worldly than others.. examples of specific bans:.

My mother and father would change the channel if Roy Orbison would come on tv, since we werent allowed to listen to the radio, only to my parents oldies vinyl records.

I think they went to a roy Orbison concert, and if memory serves me correctly, (according to my parents story), he made an accouncement that all JW's were to leave. I doubt this was true, but this was the reason that they refused to watch him or listen to his music.

Twisted Sister - I remember that was considered very heavy metal and very bad.

There are some crazy, hateful women out there, but not all women are like that. There are some very kind, caring, giving,intelligent women.

Just like not all men are rapists, or chauvinists, or lazy arrogant selfish assholes,

There are grood and wonderful men who are giving, supportive, caring, intelligent, hardworking.

Cant lump one sex into one category. it's kind of ignorant, dont ya think?

i too think you might have an anxiery disorder that you probably should talk over with a therapist.

They do not believe that their being of the anointed gives them special "insights" beyond what even some experienced members of the great crowd may have. They do not believe that they necessarily have more holy spirit than their companions of the other sheep have; nor do they expect special treatment or claim that their partaking of the emblems places them above the appointed elders in the congregation.

suuuuuuuure, why dont the rank and file see this as domineering and controlling?

All of the above are great examples of their twisted beliefs.

This one doctrine that always always raises my blood pressure:

The teaching that God is going to destroy MILLIONS of INNCENT children, including MINE, at Armageddon.

i don't think i am an apostate, but do feel like one for being on these boards as we were always warned not to at the meetings etc.. i disagree with so many things they teach, the main thing is the blood issue....being a new auntie, i love my niece soooo much and if i were the only person that could save her, how on earth could i not?

i'd be blood guilty for not saving her!!!!!

that in my books, would be murder.. however, may be it's because i've only been away from the mtgs for a year, but i still think of it most days and although i feel i've made the right decision as nothing was making me happy in it, and obvioulsy my ex beating me and getting away with it.....i still feel a certain pull towards it and a kind of insane loyalty???.

I have 2 brother in laws, that are pompous arrogant pharisee pricks. (both hold positions of authority in their respective congregations)

Im just glad I dont have to deal with them anymore.
