Pan, I really enjoyed reading your post..
..response from jehovah's witnesses.
it may label me "meddlesome" or even "unforgiving".
i realize and accept that as a consequence of what i am about to say.

something on the song thread that i posted, song by tu pac, got me to thinking about racisim.
why do people discriminate against people that have different color skin?
i understand it is a learned response, but my "elder" father is very racist... and this is how i was raised.. i don't get it.
Drachir,
Thank you for the apology.
Please, do not give it another thought.

ok, just kidding.
i like you dude and i'm not trying to start a fight or make enemies here.
but i do have to bring this up.
I love long hair on men.
However, I hate the mullet style and it now looks so dated.
we all probably know already that jws don't celebrate christmas, labeling it a pagan holiday and telling its whole sordid history to anyone who'll listen.
however, i found out that wedding rings are pagan in origin.
the jws know it but they include the exchange of rings during the wedding ceremony, explaining that rings are exchanged as an outward symbol to everyone that this couple is married, thus justifying the pagan origin of the whole thing.
The watchtower religion is based on a lie, yet many people believe that by practicing it they are serving God.
You're right Star. Most things have a pagan origin.
According to the watchtower Paganism is anything not in strict conformance with their religious edicts.
Edited so as to be more understandable.

firpo carr's latest book is: "jehovah's witnesses:.
the african-american enigma- a contemporary study", .
los angeles- while they are probably best known for their door-to-door.
RR, I also understand that when blacks began to come into the organization in great numbers in the '50's and '60's, they weren't exactly welcomed with open arms. Many of the white brothers resented their being there and some of them even left the organizstion because of blacks coming in. Sometimes, even congregational "privileges" were withheld from blacks.
This organization was started by midwestern white men with prejudices of their own, but after all, numbers, wherever they come from, are numbers. But it took awhile for blacks to be fully integrated into the organization.
reborn,.
you have the fire inside needed to take the jw's down.
however, i was wondering, what fuels your anger?
I am what the Watchtower Society fears most ........... An individual who is young, educated, proactive, and angry.
My favorite Reborn saying.

I'm offended that you are more interested in dismissing the statistical facts of a study than looking for ways to identify the problem and look for solutions
The two are not mutually exclusive. For your information, I do dismiss the statistics in questions and I AM involved in identifying the real problem and seeking solutions for that problem. Are you?
FYI, I do not believe that being thin skinned is a bad thing.
Thanks.

So, The Bell Curve is not being challenged?
There are two major books due out this fall that will challenge the conclusions of Murray and Herrnstein.
The Brookings Institution, a Washington-based centrist think tank, will be putting out a book entitled ``Does The Bell Curve Ring True?'' Charles Shultze, Thomas Kane and William Dickens are the authors.
Cool!

Larc, I don't have all the answers. You're the scientist. Not I. However, just to venture a guess:
From the time that blacks were allowed to join major league games, they heard the well-worn phrase to be a "credit to their race" both on and offr the playing field.
These men, therefore, had to carry the burden of double circumspection, to play better than white players and also to conduct a life that was far more exemplary than both their white on-the-field counterparts and the ordinary white citizen. So maybe that attitude carried over and now blacks realize that one way to mark their mark in the world and to enjoy riches beyond their wildest dreams is to be a good athlete. Remember, though, we are only talking about a small percent of blacks. Not all blacks are athletically inclined. Just as I suppose not all of them have rhythm.
