Another story came to my mind. I don't remember all of it. It was quite long. But it was said to have happend in a spanish/portugeese (I think) little town. It was a catholic town, at least. When I heard it back then I thought it was sooo funny
The catholic church had a problem with this town, because all the priests that were sent to this place, one by one became JWs. The legend goes on to tell the story of each and one of them.
I remember only this one partly: One priest, along with his sexton(?), was standing at a grave (or something) that had an inscription from Matthew 23:27 ("Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness.")
And the sexton was thinking of how it reminded him of the priest... or something. Well both the priest and the sexton became JWs, of course.
Anyone heard this story? Maybe someone has got the story in full?
It would have been nice to read the complete story again.

If he didn't attack her, why was he arrested?
He had apparently raped many other women in that park.
W.Once: Was it my story you said to be true?

there is also a fake poem by Victor HUGO where he praises JWs, but how many checked that he died in 1885 ?
Victor Hugo uses Jehovah's name once in Les miserables, at least in my Norwegian translation.
So of course a witness would take credit for that!
I remember one story I heard. Don't know where it was from, or when, but it was something like this:
A rapist was loose in the town/city, and especially one park or forest area was his favourite crime scene. A pioneer sister was on her way home (or to) FS or a bible study one dark evening. And she had to go through that specific park. She prayed to Jah, and went on. In the middle of the park, she met this dangerous man, but he did not attack her. Later, after he was arrested, he was asked why he did not attack this woman (I always wondered how anyone could know what he did not do...?).
The rapist answered: But she was not alone, she was walking along with two men on her side.
Wow, I remember being so impressed...

Beards and dress clothes...
by B_Deserter ini often wonder about the unwritten rule in kingdom halls that a witness should be in dress clothes and brothers cannot have beards (the beard rule i think is pretty much us-only though).
sure, they won't stop you from coming to a meeting in your work clothes and they might even treat you fine.
but, if you want to go anywhere in the congregation (i.e.

Nope. The beards were (an still is, I guess) an issue here in Norway as well. If you had a beard, or something other hairy stuff in your face, you were not to have any privileges. One new brother in my hall (really nice guy with adorable family, also new), had a moustache for a long time. One day he shaved it off. Two weeks later (or so it seemed) he was an MS.
I can't remember any dress rules, though.

You know same old prayer over and over again doesn't really mean much.
They sure are.
But instead of common prayer lines, like some churches, the JWs got individual prayer lines.
I can recall many brothers doing almost the same prayer over and over. Not the same as the other brothers, but they tend to stick to the same lines everytime.
Don't they?
Not very much meaning in that either

Chaperones?
by CHILD inhow many of you courted as jws?
did you have chaperones?
if so, do you adhere to that rule all of the time?

Thank you, shell
Yes, I protected their honour. And some of them were really great to be with (meening I did not feel like the third wheel), and they thanked me and all.
But usually (with most of them and others), I felt that they would not bring me along unless they had the use for me or felt they had no choice, or something.
Never had any use for a chaperone myself, that's for sure..

I usually was the chaperone...
The good thing about it was that someone would spend time with me that way...

I say no -> My family is unhappy -> BAD
Who will be unhappy? Your wife or your kids? It certainly is more status in being an elders wife... so I can see her point of view
But if you tell your kids that if you become an elder, they need to be good examples to all the other kids in the cong... I think that the kids might think that their father not being an elder, is a good thing...
And if you sit down and explain to your family that you rather spend that time with them, and really do that. (But then, of course, it is a "privilege"...). You can say that you need more time, and might say yes the next time.
And then, before next time, reduce you FS time to right below 10 hours, but just enough to avoid questions. Maybe you can allow your kids (depends on their age) to do something that an elder's child should not do (nothing really bad, but something that will make them/you a bad example).
I don't think this will make your family too unhappy, will it? And My father was an elder, and I sort of wish he wasn't.
Personally I think, as long as you just keep up your appearances for your family, you should not say yes.

Donations for literature I would spend at Mc Donald's!!! Sorry!!!
by Witness 007 inin my last 2 years in field service in australia tax laws meant we could no longer offer publications for money or directly ask for a donation.
if the householder asks, we would explain our voluntry work was paid for by donations.
i was suprised how many people would give you $10 or $20 dollars thinking it's going to some good cause....however, i would go and buy some lunch at mc donald's.

But now, instead of pocketing the money that we got when we "placed" a magazine or book, since we had already paid for them, we were now expected to bring any donations back to the hall. But we've already "donated" for the cost of the book...any monies collected and donated would be a double donation on the same publication.
I was never a good donator. And I did not always donate for the literature I picked up. I felt bad about it for a short time, then forgot about it (I always forgot to bring cash to the meetings). Though, I used to donate the money I received in FS (the few coins I got). It kind of made up for the donations I did not bring myself.
I remember shortly after the new arrangement (don't sell, ask for donations) was in place, we were some people visiting a young couple. We were talking about how many donations we received and put on the money box. The husband of the house (soon-to-be MS) began to look bothered, and asked: "Ehr.... do you not put them in your pocket? I already donated and paid for the magazines, I thought I could keep the money..."
I remember now shocked I was (how could he keep the donations for himself?). And felt really sorry for him. Hehe. He was really ashamed. Priceless
